IE6 Border Chaos
Written by Jonathan McLean
What Is Border Chaos?
This is a bug that I have observed in IE 6.0/Win, but not in previous versions of IE/Win. I do not know if IE/Mac has it. The bug occurs when the following conditions are met:
  • There are two consecutive block-level boxes; The second one has a negative top margin; and There is at least one border on the second box or its ancestors.
Perhaps not the most common situation — we don’t often use negative margins for consecutive flowed boxes — but IE renders all the borders around the second box in odd locations (and seems to omit some entirely), which is just wrong. There is a demo on another page. For those people without IE/Win, some screenshots follow.
Screenshots
The demo should be rendered like this (screenshot from Firefox 0.8): This seems pretty simple — how hard can it be to draw a few lines? Unfortunately, IE 6.0/Win doesn't like it at all. It draws parts of the surrounding borders all over the place, even eliminating bits here and there:
The Code
The code used in the demo is as follows: These boxes are also enclosed by div#global-wrapper , which has a two-pixel border. If you check the screenshot, you will notice a pair of two-pixel horizontal lines going across the page — these are from

I've been working with a small group of incredibly talented fellow chaotes to develop the tentatively-titled Chaos Matrix Educational Organization as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational group. Our primary goal is the acquisition of land and the construction of at least one physical library (initially on the West Coast) to house the Chaos Matrix collection of occult books and media; this also gives us a way to preserve our personal collections from scattering or destruction beyond our deaths by donating them to the library in our wills. Once established, others like yourself can make similar plans if you like the way we've set it up (we'll have the details then.)

It's now freeware, because coming soon is a shiny new version. Here's some snippets from reviews: Idle Thumbs Imagine a world where instead of using his experiences with LSD to become an evangelist of therapeutic psychadelia, Timothy Leary had instead opted to learn assembler and program low-budget shmups for pc-download. For those unable to afford even the smallest portion of crack, Spheres of Chaos will dilate the pupil of your third eye and give you change from a fiver. This is no usual Asteriods family member, SoC is the difficult nephew. The one with all the good albums who stayed out late and got that girl into trouble back in school. Those particle effects? You can recognise the family traits as being present and correct, but somewhere in the past you can see some Minter has entered the bloodline. You're going to be glad very soon that SoC doesn't really vacate from the Asteroids paradigm, because whilst the basic game is in the same world - visually, this has vacated the previous galaxy. This is the anti-asteroids. Whereas Logg drew his space pure, flat and black - exquisitely cut with bright white - McLeod gives you all the colours. All at once. And then he cycles them.

FRACTAL CHAOS
Crashes the Wall
between Science and Religion
As Above, So Below
At any given moment, life is completely senseless. But viewed over a period, it seems to reveal itself as an organism existing in time, having a purpose, trending in a certain direction. Aldous Huxley (1894-1963)
New discoveries in the science and mathematics of Chaos research are revolutionizing our world view. They reveal a hidden fractal order underlying all seemingly chaotic events. The fractals are intricate and beautiful. They repeat basic patterns, but with an infinity of variations and forms. The world-view emerging from this scientific research is new, and yet at the same time ancient. With a little thought, and the help of this web, you can better understand the significance of Chaos and Fractals. You can see how to use these insights in your life to create a bridge between Science and Spirituality. It is possible to apply this new knowledge to better understand your life, to live autonomously, based on freedom, and your own contact with the Source of the Universe, the Infinite. The revolutionary new Fractal mind-set discovered by scientists and mathematicians can help you to see the beauty and meaning that borders all chaos. These fractals are in space, as shown by the graphics on these webs, and in time, as shown in all life, including your own. We are born and die, we wake up and fall asleep, the sun rises and sets, we breathe in and out. There are basic patterns and structure to time and space that provide a unifying coherence. As the mystic sages of long ago put it, "as above, so below."

Appreciating My Job
I was reflecting on my last post on Von's recent Ph.D. and it dawned on me that whenever I write about academic life I vent about how we're under-paid, -appreciated, -worked, -valued. All this is true and it (obviously) really bothers me. But what I never write, and what Von alluded to in his comment, is the fact that I/we get paid essentially to read books and to be smart and know things. My undergraduate advisor once reminded me that I don't get paid for what I do, I get paid for what I know And that's a pretty amazing thing.
Continue reading "Appreciating My Job" ...

It may not be valued in the way I think it deserves, but how many people can honestly say that they love their job, and that they wouldn't trade it for anything? If I won the lottery, I'd do exactly what I'm doing now, and I think that's an extremely rare statement. The song vicariously asks us what we'd do if we had a million dollars; I'd show up to class the next day and keep on with what I know I'm really good at and with what I really enjoy. Ok, I'd do it from a much larger home office, I'd drive to work in a bit more style, and I'd spend more time on my own work than on grading undergraduate papers, but you'd have to force me out of this profession.
