The total extent of snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere at the end of February was at the highest level since the same period 42 years ago in 1966. The all-time record for extreme snow depths was during the winter of 1887-88. According to my climatological colleagues in Britain, Japan and the U.S., the winter months of December, January and February were likewise the coldest as a whole since at least the late 1970s, in some cases dating back to either the 1930s or even the 1880s. One area of southeastern China claims that this exceptionally harsh winter of 2007-08 has been the "worst since 1210, nearly 800 years ago!" As I mentioned last week, large portions of China were literally ‘paralyzed’ in early to mid February by unprecedentedly heavy snowfalls and temperatures at times at record low levels. Tens of millions of Chinese New Year celebrants were left stranded with no food, water or shelter. More than 25,000 miles of power lines in southern China collapsed under the weight of snow and ice in areas that rarely even see the white stuff. The Chinese Government had no way of coping with the unique meteorological event. For example, there were no snowplows and there wasn’t any salt to put on the icy roadways.

NASA GISS and "pesky sunspot correlations continue"
Above: Earth in comparison, size wise to common sunspots The Christion Science Monitor had a detailed article recently that brought in a surprisng source - NASA GISS - an entity that seems firmly entrenched in the AGW- CO2 theory of climate change. Here are some excerpts from the article: Researchers say they've found puzzling correlations between changes in the sun's output and weather and climate patterns on Earth. These links appear to rise above the level of misinterpreted data or faulty equipment. "There are some empirical bits of evidence that show interesting relationships we don't fully understand," says Drew Shindell, a researcher at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York.

The reality of climate change due to human activities and its consequences in terms of climatic accidents, reduction of biodiversity, sanitary risks, etc., are now admitted by everybody. It is thought that carbon dioxide released during fossil fuel combustion (oil, natural gas, coal) is the foremost factor.
The aims of this international scientific and professional conference are:
    • to gather a certain number of experts to evaluate the state of the art to discern verified results based on recognised aspects, on an international scale to shed light on possible strategies for action at the level of decision-makers, farmers, food-processing industries and consumers.
This conference will help make people aware of the consequences of our choices and of our ways of life, on a local scale as well as on the global scale. It will be a footbridge between the researchers’ results and the people likely to put this knowledge into practice .
This meeting is simultaneously organized by several partners working in the field of organic agriculture.

    A Climate of Staged Angst
Posted to Author: Others Climate Change Science Policy: General Author: Hans Von Storch and Nico Stehr in Der Speigel The following essay by Hans Von Storch and Nico Stehr was originally published in Der Spiegel, a German newspaper, on 24 January 2005. We are providing an English translation with the permission of the authors and Der Speigel. The days are gone when climate researchers sat in their ivory towers packed to the rafters with supercomputers. Nowadays their field has become the stuff of thrillers, and they themselves have risen to take on the leading roles. The topic is so hotly contested, the prognoses so spectacular, that they are no longer merely the subject of media reports; now the specialists in staged apocalypse have moved in. Last year Roland Emmerich depicted a climatic collapse provoked by humankind in his film "The Day After Tomorrow." Since last week the belletristic counterpart has been available in German bookstores: the novel "State of Fear," by the best-selling author Michael Crichton. The thriller is about the violent conflict between sober environmental realists and radical environmental idealists. For the idealists, the organized fear of abrupt climate change serves as a handy weapon. They interpret every somehow unusual weather event as proof of anthropogenic global warming. "You have to structure your information so that it's always confirmed, no matter what kind of weather we have," the P.R. consultant for the environmentalist organization advises. The realists, who protest that the evidence that human activity has increased meteorological extremes is thin, are fighting a losing battle. Their dry scientific arguments are unable to gain any ground against the colorful, horrific visions of the climate idealists.

So what are the probabilities of any of these scenarios happening and how soon? Collapse and melting of the EAIS is extremely unlikely, and is probably only possible many thousands of years into the future if we doing nothing to moderate greenhouse gas emissions and a runaway Greenhouse Effect develops as a result. Some models predict that with a relatively small temperature increase, half the Greenland ice sheet may melt within a thousand years, and may disappear entirely within 3,000 years. Most worrying of all is the West Antarctic ice sheet, which is showing signs of becoming increasingly unstable, and which may have a 1 in 20 chance of collapsing and melting within the next 200 years. Commentary on puzzling things in life, nature, science, technology, and recent news by Anthony Watts
Making Tea at the Hadley Climate Research Unit
from: Modern Mechanix, September 1929  Over on Climate Audit, Steve McIntyre did a post about what HadCRU recently did here and at left. They announced: We have recently corrected an error in the way that the smoothed time series of data were calculated. Data for 2008 were being used in the smoothing process as if they represented an accurate estimate of the year as a whole. This is not the case and owing to the unusually cool global average temperature in January 2008, the error made it look as though smoothed global average temperatures had dropped markedly in recent years, which is misleading. Steve reports:   For their influential graphic showing smoothed temperature series, they used a 21-point binomial filter (this is reported) extrapolating the latest number for 10 years. This obviously places a lot of leverage on January and February temperatures. As has been

    Climate Change
    Introduction
The Earth's climate system is shaped by the winds and currents that move heat and moisture around the planet to cycle the atmosphere and the oceans. As such, global climate change is affected by a myriad of factors, ranging from solar wind from the sun to greenhouse gases on the Earth. Scientists understand that the Earth's climate has always changed over history, but it is the current rate of change that has suddenly become an alarming reality.
    The Observed Facts
Over the past century, dramatic increases have been observed in terms of sea-levels, which are largely governed by the extent of polar ice caps, and surface air temperature.
The Debate: Are Human Activities Affecting the Climate?
The international community has intensely debated the extent to which human activities have affected the global climate system, but no clear answer has emerged. There are generally two opposing schools of thought, and both have significant scientific research and evidence to support their arguments. First, the vast majority of climate scientists charge that human activities, particularly in terms of the consumption of fossil fuels and the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, are affecting and increasing the extent of the greenhouse effect. The overall result is that the planet should be getting warmer, especially since the dawn of the industrial revolution, a prediction that coincides with current observations.
