Aviation's Climate Change Impact is Small
    Aviation is responsible for:
    • 2% of global carbon dioxide (CO ) emissions
    • 12% of CO emissions from all transport sources, compared to 74% from road transport
    • 3% of the total man-made contribution to climate change
By 2020, airlines are aiming for at least an additional 25% improvement in fuel efficiency and CO emissions, through technology and operational enhancements.
    Scientific Uncertainties
Although the natural greenhouse effect is vital for human existence, many scientists believe that additional warming linked to human activity may cause our climate to change irreversibly. However scientists disagree over the amount, probability and nature of these changes. There is also disagreement over aviation's contribution to climate change. There is a good understanding of CO emissions, which contribute directly to the greenhouse effect, along with water vapour. Nitrogen oxides (NO x ) contribute indirectly by creating ozone in the lower atmosphere. But little is known about the effect of contrails, cirrus cloud formation and the methane-reducing capabilities of NO

Climate Change: Prospects for Nature
With Keynote Speaker Al Gore On September 15, 2006, The New York Botanical Garden presented the symposium Climate Change: Prospects for Nature. View the free Webcast of the symposium to hear from keynote speaker Al Gore, along with leading scientists and experts, on the critical issue of climate change. Click here to register for the Webcast and for more information. Webcast made possible by Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman About the Symposium Bringing together an impressive roster of participants with a broad spectrum of interests, the symposium presented the science behind climate change, which is rapidly being acknowledged as the most important environmental issue of our time. Eminent scientists presented fresh, relevant scientific data. Panelists provided context and perspective. And Al Gore’s keynote address set forth powerful evidence that this bout of climate change is not merely part of natural cycles. The symposium was organized by The New York Botanical Garden and Thomas E. Lovejoy, Ph.D., principal editor of

Climate Change poses an enormous challenge to policy makers, scientists, grassroots activists, legislators and business executives. In order to meet this challenge, leaders in these and other sectors have established model climate policies and practices and are encouraging everyday citizens to take action in increasingly effective ways. Collectively, these actions are beginning to change the way that decision makers and the general public understand global warming and are encouraging actions to address these challenges. Emerging Leaders, Emerging Solutions will highlight emerging strategies, leaders and ideas in response to global warming and climate change. The conference will explore solutions from a variety of sectors, including non-profit, business, policy, and community-based leaders. Speakers and panelists will share their model efforts, and participants will discuss ways to combine efforts to collectively address greenhouse gas emissions. Particular attention will be paid to issues such as: the appropriate balance of market-based and regulatory approaches to climate policy, issues of equity and justice in the formulation of climate policies, and the role of a wide range of solutions and policies from energy consumption and emissions reductions to alternative energy development, transportation and land use planning.

Adapting to Climate Change
Climate is a strong influence on forest and range lands in BC. It affects tree growth, productivity, and numerous resource values derived from these lands. Managing these resources in a changing climate poses tough challenges for forest and range managers.
The Ministry of Forests and Range is responding to climate change through a number of actions which support the provincial government's 40-point climate change action plan led by the Ministry of Environment.

Much of Oxfam's reputation comes from our experience of working with partners and beneficiaries, and capturing and spreading the knowledge gained by having programmes in over 70 countries. In this section, we synthesise some of the lessons we have learned, to share them with development professionals, academics, and others who might be interested in the knowledge gained from our programmes. This is not intended to be comprehensive, but to give a representative selection of documents and resources that we feel are worth sharing. The topics covered are: Emergency manuals (advice and recommendations on water and sanitation, health promotion, food security and nutrition, protection, and other topics)

California Energy Commission Climate Change ctivities California energy regulators have known for years that energy policy and environmental policy are inextricably linked. For more than 30 years, California has had aggressive energy efficiency and renewable energy policies, in order to minimize the impact of energy consumption on the environment. California's aggressive motor vehicle air quality standards have long exceeded the minimum federal requirements, and the state continues to push the federal government to allow us to keep exceeding those standards. In large measure, California's programs have been motivated by concerns about the environment. Those concerns are exemplified in the context of global climate change. California's Climate Change Research Center states that during the last 50 years, winter and spring temperatures have been warmer, spring snow levels in lower and mid-elevations have dropped, the snowpack has been melting one to four weeks earlier, and sea levels are projected to rise. Not only will there be a change in average temperatures but there is a projected increase in extreme conditions such as a rising incidence of "heat storms." While these trends will impact all of us, they will have an especially large consequence for California's agricultural industry.

Although this book is still in a very preliminary state, we seem to be moving toward a cohesive structure. The book is really two parts: first, a primer on the science of climate change, and second, a study of societal implications of climate change. The first part deals with much more concrete, physically based principles. As such, it can be developed more easily. The second part is potentially more controversial, but not necessarily so; for the early stages of development, the second part should probably be limited to generalities and external links. What is Climate?== Climate is a broad term, but it always describes a long-term average of a system. Often 'climate' is used to mean the long-term mean state of the atmosphere, including temperature, humidity, and wind. In other contexts, 'climate' can include the oceanic state, the cryosphere (snow and sea-ice), the biosphere, and sometimes even the lithosphere (Earth's crust). Meteorologists and atmospheric scientists often say that climate is what you expect; weather is what you get.

Global temperatures have risen by 0.6 degrees Celsius in the last 130 years. This rise in global temperatures leads to huge impacts on a wide range of climate related factors . The graph below shows the rise of global temperatures since 1860. Global Temperature Since 1860 http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/special_report/sci/tech/global_warming Levels of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide gases are rising, mainly as a result of human activities. Carbon dioxide is being dumped in the atmosphere at an alarming rate. Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have been pumping out huge quantities of carbon dioxide, raising carbon dioxide concentrations by 30%. The burning of fossil fuels is partly responsible for this huge increase. This graph shows carbon dioxide emissions increasing over the last 130 years.
