COGNITIVE SCIENCE (LING 430) Fall 2002 professor: York H. Gunther class time and place: Tuesdays 4:20-6:50pm office hours: 520 Sierra Tower: TTh 2-3:30pm, or by appointment contact: email: ygunther@csun.edu ; phone: (818) 677-6462 Cognitive Science emerged in the 1950s as an alternative to behaviorism. Unlike its predecessor, the cognitive approach to mind is fundamentally interdisciplinary, developing through the work of philosophy, psychology, linguistics, neuroscience and computer science. In this course we will review the major topics on which cognitive scientific research is focused, including representation, computation, logic, rules, concepts, analogies, images and connections. However, we will also consider some of the challenges the paradigm faces, including its ability to explain conscious and emotional experiences, our embodiment in social and physical environments, and dynamic systems and mathematical knowledge.
