Managing Waterhemp With A Devious Nature
As you think ahead a few weeks, and make your herbicide plans, you remember that nagging patch of waterhemp that just won’t go away. You have tried to control it (kill it) with a seemingly toxic shower of glyphosate, but the waterhemp just keeps growing. At some point you have to realize there is a need to manage it (live with it as best you can.) So how do you manage waterhemp that is resistant to glyphosate? (Glad you asked!) The number of acres of corn and soybeans treated with glyphosate increases annually. And that trend is paralleled with the trend of weeds that are resistant to glyphosate, both in number of species, and in number of patches within that specie. That is not rocket science. And neither is the assembly of a plan to manage waterhemp that is glyphosate resistant. It is offered by weed specialist Aaron Hager at the University of Illinois. Hager’s plan is based on the need to control waterhemp in Roundup Ready soybeans. He says if you know what types of herbicides your pesky waterhemp will resist, then post-emergent herbicide selection and utilization can be made before planting. Hager knows your waterhemp may be resistant to an ALS-inhibiting herbicide. In addition to your glyphosate resistant waterhemp, there is also waterhemp that is resistant to PPO inhibiting herbicides. He anticipates the near-term discovery of waterhemp that is resistant to both glyphosate and PPO inhibitors, which he says is a “worst case scenario.” That means there are no post emergent herbicides that will kill waterhemp. But there is something that could be done to help your problem and that is any practice that will hasten crop development and early canopy development. Hager’s recommendations are:

Ten Years of SARE Crop Production NORTH CENTRAL REGION NORTH CENTRAL Northeast South West Planting crops into 4 to 8-inch ridges helps farmers reduce the amount of herbicides they spray to control weeds. Photo by T.L. Gettings/Rodale Institute. In the mid-1980s, producers seeking ways to conserve soil without sacrificing yields or profits began to look at ridge tillage. Some farmers wanted to combat erosion. Others desired an alternative to reduce the fuel and machinery maintenance expenses associated with the several tractor passes required for conventional tillage. First developed in the 1950s, ridge tillage features minimum soil disturbance. Farmers plant their crops into four- to eight-inch ridges, and the soil remains undisturbed from harvest to the next planting. During the production season, ridge-till farmers control weeds with cultivation and minimal use of herbicides.

Missouri Wheat Production Unchanged from Last Month
(COLUMBIA, MO) - "The Missouri winter wheat crop is turning out similar to what farmers expected a month ago," said Gene Danekas, Director, USDA’s Missouri Agricultural Statistics. "Yields are varying from well below normal in the southwestern counties to above normal in the northeastern and southeastern areas. The State yield should end up close to the 5-year average." The mild winter and rapid development of the crop, coupled with excellent harvesting weather, allowed farmers to reach completion of harvest several days ahead of normal. The State production of winter wheat is forecast at 46.1 million bushels, based on conditions as of July 1, 2006, up 58 percent from the 2005 crop but unchanged from the June 1 forecast. Yields in the State are expected to average 53 bushels per acre, down 1 bushel from the 2005 yield, also unchanged from June 1. Harvested acres are forecast at 870,000, up 61 percent from the low 2005 acreage level.
