Darwin's Crustacea http://www.oum.ox.ac.uk/onlinedb/darwin/darintro.htm Posted: July 11, 2005 When Charles Darwin returned from his voyage as naturalist aboard the Beagle , he entrusted his collected specimens to various scientists for study. The crustacea went to Thomas Bell, who in 1862 sent them to J. O. Westwood, Oxford's first Hope Professor of Zoology. Each record contains the specimen's image and scientific name, and the corresponding entry from Darwin's diary ("June 1833 Maldonado; Crab, caught in dry hole in one of the low islands of the R.Parana, above Rosario"). Users can search on any of these fields—for the species Dilocarcinus (Dilocarcinus) pagei cristatus , for example, or simply for the word crab or the year . They make a fascinating field for browsing, and a compelling portrait of the great naturalist's thoughts and methods.

Crusty crustacean - In Sum - discovery of Crustacea fossils - Brief Article
Natural History March, 2002 by Kirsten L. Weir
CRUSTY CRUSTACEAN Crustaceans are a large and Varied crew, with some 39,000 species living today and many more known from their fossil remains. The oldest fossil crustaceans date back to the Late Cambrian Epoch, between 512 and 505 million years ago. Now a team of paleontologists has found a fossilized arthropod they're betting is an early member of the subphylum Crustacea. If they're right, that would make it the oldest known crustacean, dating back 540-520 million years, to the Early Cambrian.

Crustacea
Introduction
Crustaceans, carcinology, the insects of the seas. A large group of unsettled rank (phylum, subphylum, superclass, or class). Ancient and very diverse, but not nearly as rich in species as are the insects. Over 40,000 species occur worldwide, most are marine, about 10% are freshwater and, only a few are terrestrial. The chitinous cuticle of larger species is calcified.
Recognition
Diverse! All non-insect, non-arachnid aquatic arthropods. Most have 2 pairs of antennae, and many pairs of segmented appendages, typically with gills for gas exchange. The appendages are basically biramous (protopod, endopod, exopod). The head has 5 pairs of appendages: first antennae (antennules), second antennae (or just antennae), mandibles, first maxillae, second maxillae. The trunk is primitively composed of many similar segments each with similar biramous appendages, more advanced groups have uniramous appendages, fewer segments that are more specialized or fused into distinct regions (thorax and abdomen), part of the thorax may be fused to the head (cephalothorax). The trunk appendages are often highly modified (maxillipeds, gnathopods, pereiopods, pleopods, and uropods). Malacostracan pereiopods may be chelate and have 7 segments (coxa, basis, ischium, merus, carpus, propus, and dactylus), the exopodite is often loss.

This page of the book is from " The New Student's Reference Work: Volume 1 " by Chandler B. Beach, Frank Morton McMurry and others. CRUSADES CRUSTACEA finest etchings, perhaps, were those in Peter Schlemihl, Grimm's German Popular Stories and Dickens' Oliver Twist. His powerful series of The Bottle showed the evils of drunkenness in a strong light. He died on Feb. 1, 1878. C r usades The ( from Portuguese cru-zado, " In 1144 Edessa was conquered and the Christians slaughtered. A second crusade, preached by the famous St. Bernard, was led in 1147 by Conrad III of Germany and Louis VII of France. About 1,200,000 soldiers marched under them, only to be defeated, Conrad's army, by the treachery of the Greek emperor, near Iconium, and Louis' army in the Pisidian Mountains. One of the strangest happenings in history is the children's crusade, which took place in 1212. An army of French children, 30,000 strong, headed by a peasant-boy named Stephen, set out for the Holy Land by way of Marseilles. A like army of German children, 20,000 strong, led by a boy named Nicholas, crossed the Alps at Mont Cenis. A second army of German children, numbering nearly 20,000, crossed the Alps by a more easterly route, touching the sea at Brindisi. Their idea was that the Mediterranean would open a path for them to Palestine and that Jerusalem would be recovered and the Moslems made Christians by miracles. Some of the children became discouraged and returned to their homes, many stopped by the way, but most of them either perished on the march, or were lost at sea or sold into slavery.

Terrestrial Amphipods or "Lawn Shrimp," (Crustacea: Amphipoda)
    Thomas R. Fasulo
    Introduction
Amphipods comprise an order of crustacea, shrimp-like in form, which contains mostly marine and freshwater forms. While some species are terrestrial, they still require moist habitats. These terrestrial species are sometimes referred to as "lawn shrimp" due to their similarity to true shrimp. Amphipods were first described in New South Wales, Australia, and then later on several Pacific islands. They were first reported in the Western Hemisphere in 1918 when at least one species was found in California (Mallis 1990). About 90 species occur in the United States and Canada. Nationally, the best known terrestrial species that occasionally invades structures is Talitrus sylvaticus (Haswell) (Smith and Whitman 1992). Two species common to Florida are Talitrus specificus and Talitroides allaudi (Hodge 1999).

In common with other habitats, desert terrestrial and aquatic habitats have numbers of kinds and numbers of individuals of invertebrate animals far greater than those of vertebrates. Likewise, an argument can be made that invertebrates play a far greater role in the desert biome than do vertebrates. Nonetheless, we'll consider only a very small subsample and limit ourselves to a few of the more dramatic forms.
    Phylum Mollusca: Mollusks
Most mollusks are marine and most non-marine mollusks are aquatic. Thus it might be expected that deserts would be nearly devoid of mollusks. In actuality, there are aquatic taxa in rivers and other bodies of water and a surprising number of terrestrial forms. The class Gastropoda (literally, stomach foot) includes the snails and slugs. Although some aquatic snails occur in the Chihuahuan Desert, most of the gastropod fauna is terrestrial and belongs to the subclass Pulmonata. The name is in reference to the lung-like structure used for breathing air by all of the northern desert land species. Keys for identification are given by Metcalf and Smartt website.

This means they can move by themselves. Some become sessile , like barnacles, which become attached to a support. Some are parasitic , like sea lice fish lice whale lice , and tongue worms Crustaceans have three major body parts. They are, front to back: head, thorax, and abdomen.
