Jump to: navigation search Not to be confused with cryogenics Technicians prepare a patient for cryopreservation. Cryonics is the low-temperature preservation of humans and other animals that can no longer be sustained by contemporary medicine until resuscitation may be possible in the future. Human cryopreservation is not currently reversible. In the United States, cryonics can only be legally performed on humans after pronounced legally dead. The rationale for cryonics is that the process may be reversible in the future if performed soon enough, and that cryopreserved people are not dead by the modern information-theoretic definition of death Cryonics is derived from the Greek word κρύος (kryos), meaning cold. There is a high representation of scientists among cryonics supporters. Scientific support for cryonics is based on studies showing substantial preservation of brain cell structure by current methods, and projections of future technology, especially molecular nanotechnology and nanomedicine . Some scientists believe that future medicine will enable molecular -level repair and regeneration of damaged tissues and organs decades or centuries in the future.

As soon as possible after legal death, a member patient is infused with a substance to prevent ice formation, cooled to a temperature where physical decay essentially stops, and is then maintained indefinitely in cryostasis (ie, stored in liquid nitrogen). As an optional extra (at extra cost) a Cryonics Institute Member may contract for cryonics professionals from Suspended Animation, Inc. to wait by the bedside during a terminal condition and immediately begin cooling and cardiopulmonary support upon pronouncement of death to minimize brain damage. When and if future medical technology allows, our member patients hope to be healed, rejuvenated, revived, and awakened to a greatly extended life in youthful good health, free from disease or the aging process. Alcor Life Extension Foundation
The Alcor Life Extension Foundation is the world leader in cryonics, cryonics research, and cryonics technology. Cryonics is the science of using ultra-cold temperature to preserve human life with the intent of restoring good health when technology becomes available to do so. Alcor is a non-profit organization located in Scottsdale, Arizona, founded in 1972. What Cryonics Is Cryonics is a speculative life support technology that seeks to preserve human life in a state that will be viable and treatable by future medicine. It is expected that future medicine will include mature nanotechnology, and the ability to heal at the cellular and molecular levels. What Cryonics Is Not Cryonics as practiced by Alcor is not an interment method, mortuary practice, or dead tissue preservation. Just as organ donation involves recovery of living organs from a donor that is brain dead, cryonics involves stabilizing the viable brain of a patient who is legally deceased based on cardiac death. Cryonics cannot work for anyone who is truly brain dead
Cryonics and Religion
Cryonics is an attempt to preserve and protect the gift of human life. The purpose of cryonics is to maintain life, not reverse death. Lack of legal status as a person does not imply lack of moral status as a person. The spiritual status of cryonics patients is the same as frozen human embryos, or unconscious medical patients. When properly examined, cryonics has been endorsed by both

Overview
  • The purpose of cryonics is to save lives and restore health.
  • Today's medical technology can't always keep us alive, let alone healthy.
  • A future medical technology based on a mature nanotechnology should be able to preserve life and restore health in all but the most extreme circumstances.
  • Tissue preserved at the temperature of liquid nitrogen does not deteriorate, even after centuries of storage.
  • Therefore, if current medical technology can't keep us alive we can instead choose to be preserved in liquid nitrogen, with the expectation that future medical technology should be able to both reverse any cryopreservation injury and restore good health. A common misconception is that cryonics freezes the dead. As the definition of "death" is "a permanent cessation of all vital functions" the future ability to revive a patient preserved with today's fundamentally better medical technology bury someone alive
    Evaluating cryonics
The major reason that cryonics is not more favorably viewed in the medical community is relatively easy to explain. Medicine relies on clinical trials. Put more simply, if someone proposes a technique for saving lives, the response is "Try it and see if it works." Methods that have not been verified by clinical trials are called "experimental," while methods that have been tried and failed are rejected.

Mark Dowdey While most transhumanists are quite convinced that life extension will be possible, most agree that it will take several years (or decades/centuries) before immortality becomes practical. And in the meantime there is a non-zero chance that you die from accidents or disease, regardless of how healthy your lifestyle is. One answer to this problem is cryonics , or rather cryonic suspension ; the technique of freezing the body to so low temperatures that it does not decay significantly. If misfortune strikes, you could be suspended until medical techniques have been developed far enough to revive you and cure you. Cryonics is currently a big gamble, and even the enthusiasts acknowledge that there are many unsolved problems. But there is little to loose by choosing cryonic suspension: either it will work and restoration methods will be developed and used in the far future, or it won't:
You are suspended You are not suspended Cryonics Works You Live You are dead Cryonics Doesn't Work You are dead You are dead
So the rational choice is to use cryonics, even if success is improbable, unless you consider the value of your life times the chance that it might work to be less than the cost of a suspension.

    http://www.permanent.com/mark/cryonics.html
    Cryonics
Up until the late 20th century, when an individual died, they had two choices:
  • Burial rot in the ground, or
  • Cremation go up in smoke. Now there's a third choice:
  • Cryonics be frozen in the hope that future technology and people will bring you back to life. A few companies are already offering the service. They freeze you slowly, eventually storing you in liquid nitrogen inside a stainless steel canister. You can pay up front, or else you can open a life insurance policy for an equal or larger amount and list the cryonics company as the beneficiary. The costs of storing people are not great. Once you've paid for the stainless steel canister and all the labor, transport, equipment and overhead for getting the deceased from their place of death to the cryonics morgue and into the canister, from that point in time onward the main cost is replacing liquid nitrogen that boils off. That is a very small cost. The cryonics company will have some of your money left over after you're in the canister. They can make money off the interest on the money left over. They can put money into your credit account to compensate for inflation and skim the rest off as profit. Cryonics companies, if set up very well legally and administratively, should be one of the most solid and long-lived businesses of today. You can freeze your whole body or you can save money and freeze just your head. If I recall correctly, the price for freezing your whole body is around US $100,000, but freezing your head costs much less, around $40,000.

Cryonics has been defined as "the technology for freezing a person after a terminal illness or a fatal accident, in the hope that medical science will be able to revive that person in the future, when life extension and anti-aging have become a reality." Cryonic suspension is an emergency medical procedure designed to save lives (much like Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation), a last-ditch effort to forestall irreversible brain damage. Since the first individual was cryonically preserved in 1967, a handful of firms have sprung up offering cryopreservation and/or storage services to the general public (Badger, 1998)

We have to recognise, however, that the future of healthy life extension (regenerative medicine, stem cell therapies, understanding the biochemical processes of aging, and nanomedicine, to name a few fields) will not arrive soon enough to benefit everyone. Many people are too old, or suffer from other conditions that will kill them before cures can be developed. This is an unpleasant reality that we must face. Do we just write these people off and forge ahead regardless? Of course not. Instead, we turn to the science and business of cryonics, a serious effort to solve this problem that has been underway since the early 1970s.

    Is Cryonics Feasible?
    Stephen Barrett, M.D.
Cryonics is defined by its proponents as "the freezing of humans as shortly as possible after death with the hope of eventual return to life." Proponents claim that it is possible to preserve "with reasonable fidelity" the basic biologic components of the brain and that future technology will be able to repair brain damage caused by "imperfect preservation, premortal disease, and postmortem changes." [1] In 2005 the cost for whole-body freezing and permanent maintenance ranged from about $28,000 to $150,000. “Brain only” suspension, which is less expensive, is also available. The Cryonics Institute states: As soon as possible after legal death, a member patient is prepared and cooled to a temperature where physical decay essentially stops, and is then maintained indefinitely in cryostasis. When and if future medical technology allows, our member patients will be healed and revived, and awaken to extended life in youthful good health. Bacterial decay may stop, but that is not enough to make recovery possible. As noted by Michael Shermer, founding publisher of
