It consists of two primary fields of research:
  • The search for living examples of animals taxonomically identified through fossil records, but which are believed to be extinct, The search for animals that fall outside of taxonomic records due to a lack of empirical evidence, but for which anecdotal evidence exists in the form of myths, legends, or undocumented sightings.
Those involved in cryptozoological study are known as cryptozoologists ; the animals that they study are often referred to as " cryptids ", a term coined by John Wall in 1983. Cryptozoology has seen very little attention from the mainstream scientific community , and is often classified as pseudoscience because of erratic application of the scientific method

Cryptozoology
Have we found all the large animals still living in the world? Probably not, since in the last decade some previously unknown species have surfaced in Southeast Asia, for example. This page is dedicated to such animals commonly called "cryptids" which might possibly exist in nature but whose existence has not yet been accepted by modern science. If you are interested in animals which have never existed in nature (although they may, in part, have been based upon real animals) such as gryphons and mermaids, please see my legendary animals page. Cryptozoological topics have generated a vast number of books, magazines, and articles. My page of books about cryptozoology lists some I've found interesting. Encounters with hairy hominids or "wild men" like the Yeti Sasquatch , and Nguoi Rung go back to antiquity and appear in legends throughout the world. One of the earliest literary compositions in the world, the Epic of Gilgamesh, contains a hairy wildman named Enkidu. North America's representative is usually called the Sasquatch, one of its Native American names, or Bigfoot. The best-known photographic evidence is the famous Roger Patterson film of a purported Sasquatch, taken in 1967. (Stories that Patterson's film was a hoax continue to circulate.) One hypothesis is that some reports represent encounters with surviving representatives of supposedly extinct hominoid or hominid species. A popular choice for Bigfoot is

Taking a Hard Look at Cryptozoology
Cryptozoology is the study of still unknown species of animals. These cryptids, as they are called, include not only the Loch Ness monster, sasquatch and other "mega-monsters", but also many lesser known mystery creatures. (Some of these have more evidence going for them than the monster super-stars.) Cryptozoology often receives a bad rep because it is often practiced with little skepticism, or regard for scientifically supported facts and theories. Likewise, paranormal cryptozoologists do little to help the integrity of cryptozoology. It can, however, be a level-headed, interesting and possibly even scientific subject, if examined with open-minded skepticism and a scientific viewpoint. Such an approach is the basis of this web site on cryptozoology. Ockham's razor, which basically states that the simplest explanation is probably the correct one, is a rationale that looms large here. This web site is undergoing a major revampplease disregard any juvenile grammar and credulity (I started this web site when I was rather young)!

Posted by: Loren Coleman on December 23rd, 2005 The Top Cryptozoology Stories of 2005 by Loren Coleman, Cryptozoologist and Author, Bigfoot! Cryptozoology A to Z , and other books. Wired News , "America Goes Cryptozoology Crazy." From the Associated Press to Downeast Magazine , from Boing Boing to Business Wire, from Maine Things Considered to Coast to Coast AM , from Giant Robot Attack of the Show , from the Maine Sunday Telegram to Fox TV News, from the Southern Illinoisian to the Daily Egyptian , from CNN to the Voice of America, from ESPN News to the Anomalist Newsline, from the Lewiston Sun-Journal to The New York Times , bloggers, correspondents, and reporters were talking about "cryptozoology" more than ever before in 2005. My own personal discovery of cryptozoology began in March 1960, thanks to an encounter with Yeti and encouragement from my mentors, the late cryptozoologists Sanderson and Heuvelmans. After forty years in this pursuit, in 2000, I decided it was time to start an annual tradition of reviewing the top stories involving cryptozoology. These annual picks are cryptozoological events, which became newsworthy during the previous twelve months (even though they may have happened in an earlier year). They have garnered the most media coverage and caused the most discussions that touch on cryptozoology. Furthermore, I point to, marginally, other news that should have perhaps received more press and broadcast notice.

Cryptozoology is literally , the study of hidden animals . It is the study of such creatures as the Australian bunyip Bigfoot, the chupacabra, and the Loch Ness monster . It is not a recognized branch of the science of zoology. Cryptozoology relies heavily upon testimonials and circumstantial evidence in the form of legends and folklore, and the stories and alleged sightings of mysterious beasts by indigenous peoples, explorers, and travelers. Since cryptozoologists spend most of their energy trying to establish the existence of creatures, rather than examining actual animals, they are more akin to psi researchers than to zoologists. Expertise in zoology, however, is asserted to be a necessity for work in cryptozoology, according to Dr. Bernard Heuvelmans, who coined the term to describe his investigations of animals unknown to science. This focus on evaluating the evidence for "cryptids" was continued by the International Society for Cryptozoology, which is now defunct. See also cryptozoology topical listings.

Cryptozoology
The tiny fishing trawler bounced and pitched in the choppy gray sea. The date: December 22, 1938. Suddenly there was a commotion on deck. The skipper hurried back to see what was going on. He found his crew standing around a large, odd fish that lay flopping and snapping on the wooden planks. The skipper had never seen anything like it. It didn't look very edible so the crew was about to toss it back into the sea with the rest of the "trash" fish when the skipper halted them. The creature was so unusual that perhaps it would have another value... He was right. The fish was called a

Cryptozoology is the study of animals and other creatures that have not yet been accepted by science as real. In other words, it is monster-hunting. Cryptozoologists look for creatures like sea serpents and the yeti , hoping to gather enough evidence to prove that these beings exist. They also look for more commonplace animals, such as the ivory-billed woodpecker , the giant vampire bat , the inflatable hedgehog and the pygmy elephant . Creatures that are under investigation by cryptozoologists are called cryptids. Although cryptozoology doesn't get much respect from other scientific disiplines, it has had some spectacular success stories, including the pongo (now known as the gorilla), the okapi (an animal that looks like a cross between a giraffe and zebra), and the coelacanth (a prehistoric fish thought to be extinct).
Cryptozoologists are a specialized branch of monster hunters. Since their ultimate goal is to discover either new species of animal or new subspecies, the science of cryptozoology is rooted in biology. The more a creature shows evidence of being supernatural, the less likely it is that cryptozoologists would be interested in it. Not many cryptozoologists investigate the strangest things like ghostly demon cats, Mothman or werewolves . Ghost hunts are left to the paranormal investigators and a few fringe cryptozoologists. On the other hand, there are very few animals, however mythical they may be, that have never stirred the interest of a cryptozoologist. This is because perfectly real animals have often been obscured by so much folklore that they seemed ridiculous.

One day in June of 1873, a farmer in Bonham, Texas, USA, looked up from his work and was astonished at what he saw. There appeared to be an enormous flying snake, banded with brilliant yellow stripes, writhing and twisting in the sky above him.
El Chupacabra, the name translated from Spanish means literally " The Goat Sucker ". The reason for this garrish name derives from the fact that the victims of this creature were, at first, usually goats who died with two puncture wounds to the throat and all of the blood drained from their bodies.
Just what are these things, described as flying rods? Your guess is as good as mine, however in my personal opinion, they represent possibly the best evidence of alien life to date, or at the least, an exotic new form of life often described as sky fish, due to the undulating motion in which they travel. Rods were discovered accidentally by film maker Jose Escamilla in 1994, while filming in Midway, New Mexico
I have to tell you, the first time I heard of the word Reptoids, I was a little bit skeptical to say the least. Initially they seemed like something that belonged in a Star Trek tv show, not in any serious type of discussion to do with alien beings that perhaps visit this Earth. As time wore on though, I found my skeptism turning from "What ? Are you kidding?" to " Maybe it's me thats crazy!".

    CRYPTOZOOLOGY
    A Critical Approach
    by Cameron McCormick
Simply put, Cryptozoology is the study of animals that have somehow escaped the classification of organized science. The study was first named in the 1940's and 1950's by Zoologists Ivan Sanderson and Bernard Heuvelmans (unaware of one another), but the concept itself is quite old. For hundred years, individuals have looked for animals that were known from only rumor or legend; and in a few isolated incidents were successful (i.e. the Okapi). According to Heuvelmans, the first major step towards modern Cryptozoology was taken by Danish Zoologist Anthonid Cornelis Oudemans. Oudemans worked on a project in the late 19th century that described Sea-Serpents from anecdotal evidence, and treated the subject very seriously. Cryptozoology has evolved since then, but there is still discussion as to whether Cryptozoology is a scientific endeavor or a pseudoscientific one.
