It can be a very general science that can be applied to any kind of dynamic population, that is, one that changes over time or space (see population dynamics ). It encompasses the study of the size, structure and distribution of populations, and spatial and/or temporal changes in them in response to birth death migration and aging Human demography is the most well known discipline of demography, and typically what people refer to when using the term demography. Demographic analysis can be applied to whole societies or to groups defined by criteria such as education nationality religion and ethnicity . In academia, demography is often regarded as a branch of either anthropology economics , or sociology Formal demography limits its object of study to the measurement of populations processes, while the more broad field of social demography population studies also analyze the relationships between economic, social, cultural and biological processes influencing a population. The term demographics is often used erroneously for demography, but refers rather to selected population characteristics as used in government

Welcome to
Introduction.
The Demography HomePage is part of an initiative to identify, document, and provide simple access to demographic information concerning The United States of America. This part describes CIESIN's data holdings and related information. This HomePage consists of a series of cascading hypertext links providing access to national data resources, on-line supporting documentation (codebooks, data dictionaries, citations), and possibly extraction tools for data access, and you may connect to an anonymous ftp service for data file retrieval. The information contained on this page is organized by major data resource. The source documents will be indexed, allowing for full and/or paragraph text searches. In addition, this page also provides connectivity to many world wide web and gophers sites listed and grouped in four distinct lists. By clicking on the highlighted (or underlined) sites you can connect to those services listed directly. Clicking on this symbol [ ] will reveal the primary information sources for the current viewing page. Finally, at the bottom of this home-page, "buttons" are provided for the users's convenience, for example; button #2 connects directly to CIESIN's Home Page "Information for a Changing World", or try button #1, CIESIN's navigational tool.

7. What Is Demography?
Brief and Straightforward Guide What is demography?
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-demography.htm
What is Demography?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Demography is the scientific study of characteristics and dynamics pertaining to the human population. The characteristics encompassed by this study include size, growth rate, density, vital statistics, and distribution of a specified population. Demography requires the study of specific information that may be gathered from a population census or vital statistic records. People who study and record this information are referred to as demographers. Demographers must know both how to scientifically obtain information and how to interpret it relatively. Demography is widely used for various purposes and can encompass small, targeted populations or mass populations. Governments use demography for political observations, scientists use demography for research purposes, and businesses use demography for the purpose of advertising. In real estate, demography is employed to give clients an overview of specific neighborhoods. Statistical concepts essential to demography include birth and death rate, infant mortality rate, fertility rate, and life expectancy . These concepts can be further broken down into more specific data, such as the ratio of men to women and the life expectancy of each gender. A census helps provide much of this information, in addition to vital statistic records. In some studies, the demography of an area is expanded to include education, income, the structure of the family unit, housing, race or ethnicity, and religion. The information gathered and studied for a demographic overview of a population depends on the party utilizing the information.

Research Digest # 1 - Ageing and Wages, Retirement Saving Crisis, and Income of Aged Cohorts
As Edward alluded in his introductory post for 2008 many of the main contributors of this blog were hard at work monitoring the ongoing events in global financial markets. We still are. However, we are also social scientists and this space is still a very important place in our minds where especially the scientific progress within the realm of demographic research commands a center role. As such, I am going to unilaterally venture a new tradition here at DM and one which I hope that I will be able to carry forward. In this way, the authors of this blog do in fact get a steady stream of links and references to research conducted in the sphere of economics and demographics. It is only because of the well-known shortage of time that these rarely reach the front pages here. This, I hope, is now going to permanently change. So, without further ado let us commence.
In this first edition of the research digest I am going to present a couple of papers which investigates a number of the hypotheses we are working with.
