Easier - Dinosaurs are large reptiles that lived millions of years ago. There were many different dinosaurs. Dinosaurs came in many different sizes and shapes. They also lived differently and in different places. Some were meat-eaters, others ate only plants. Some dinosaurs were enormous, up to 150 feet long and weighing more than 77 metric tons. Others were much smaller. Harder - The name dinosaur comes from the term Dinosauria , which means 'terrible lizards.' However dinosaurs were only distantly related to lizards. Dinosaur is the name of a prehistoric reptile group that first appeared on the earth about 230 million years ago. They lived in nearly all natural settings, from open plains to forests to the edges of swamps, lakes, and oceans. Then about 65 million years ago, the dinosaurs died out. They were not 'rediscovered' by man until the early nineteenth century, when their fossil remains were first recognized.

Although these designs will work with cheap computer paper, you can photocopy your printout onto colored cardstock for a sturdier and more colorful dinosaur. Or trace the cut-outs onto single-ply cardboard, like that on a cereal box. You can also use crayons, paint, colored pencils/pens, etc., on your dinosaur, but it is best to do this before gluing them together. My kids at summer camp like to glue wigs, hats, etc. on them. You can also add volume by putting little creases where the shoulders and hips are on the bodies. This makes them stand up better as well as look better.

Description
Ankylosaurus The Ankylosaurus lived during the Cretaceous and late Jurassic Periods. They were a medium-sized plant eating dinosaur, growing up to 30 feet long. It had an armor of spines and spikes on its back. These bony plates helped protect the Ankylosaurus from being eaten by other meat eating dinosaurs. They also had a large, heavy tail that they could swing from side-to-side like a club to protect themselves. Apatosaurus The Apatosaurus, also known as the Brontosaurus, is one of the best known dinosaurs. It lived during the late Jurassic Period. It was one of the largest dinosaurs, at up to 70 feet long. It was very heavy, with a very long neck and tail. It ate leaves and other vegetation. It could rear up on its hind legs to reach high branches. While its size helped to protect it from other dinosaurs, it could also use its long, narrow tail to hit an attacking dinosaur.. Archaeopteryx The Archaeopteryx was a small creature, about 1 foot long, that is believed to be one of the first birds. It lived in the late Jurassic Period. The Archaeopteryx had many features of a bird, including wings that allowed it to fly like a bird. It also had many features of a reptile, including reptilian teeth, claws and tail.

Measuring a total of 42 feet in length and weighing-in at an estimated 8 tons, Giganotosaurus may have been the largest predator to ever walk the Earth. This impressive animal is the first of the many dinosaurs and other Mesozoic creatures you'll encounter in Dinosaur Hall. More than 30 species are represented, about half of which are full skeletal mounts. Find out more about the species in Dinosaur Hall In addition to the skeletons, visitors can view dinosaur eggs, footprints, dinosaur sculptures, murals, paleontologist tools, a life-sized model showing the internal anatomy of a Stegosaurus and a green-screen video studio where visitors can project their own images into a world full of dinosaurs. One of the most popular attractions in Dinosaur Hall is The Big Dig . This is a hands-on exhibit where visitors can hunt for dinosaur bones. Another special attraction is the Fossil Prep Lab where fossils collected from remote localities are carefully prepared for study.
