Panoramas of paradise, and early modern dodos.
I am faintly surprised to have the privilege of giving a lecture on book IV of Milton Paradise Lost , Moxon on Sacred Geography Treatise on Paradise and others. Among the minor finds on this tour, I came across another piece of 17 th century advertising, put together by I.H. Gent in 1661: Paradise transplanted and restored in a most artfull and lively representation of the several creatures, plants, flowers, and other vegetables, in their full growth, shape, and colour: shown at Christopher Whiteheads at the two wreathed posts in Shooe-Lane, London. Artist Adam had in Paradice, when the whole Creation of Animals J.H. The dodo Raphus cucullatus ) was a flightless bird endemic to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius . Related to pigeons and doves , it stood about a metre (three feet ) tall and weighed about 20 kilograms , lived on fruit and nested on the ground. The dodo has been extinct since the mid-to-late 17th century. It is commonly used as the archetype of an extinct species because its extinction occurred during recorded human history, and was directly attributable to human activity. The adjective phrase "as dead as a dodo" means undoubtedly and unquestionably dead. The verb phrase "to go the way of the dodo" means to become extinct or obsolete, to fall out of common usage or practice, or to become a thing of the past.

Newfound Island Graveyard May Yield Clues to Dodo Life of Long Ago

By CARL ZIMMER Published: July 4, 2006 Everyone knows about the death of the dodo, but no one knows much about its life. Skip to next paragraph Image courtesy of Errol Fuller Enlarge this Image Museum Naturalis, via European Pressphoto Agency Scientists have relied on a few descriptions, preserved skins and the odd bone to describe the dodo, extinct for more than 300 years. Bones found recently on its home, Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, may allow scientists to reconstruct the ecological world of the dodo before humans arrived and it departed. The New York Times The stocky flightless bird became extinct at the end of the 1600's, less than two centuries after European explorers discovered its home, the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius . Beyond passing descriptions, little evidence of the bird has survived — a preserved skin here, an isolated leg bone there.

In early July 2007, scientists working on the island of Mauritius , east of Madagascar off of the coast of Africa , announced the discovery of the best preserved dodo skeleton ever found. It appears complete and is one of only two of the extinct bird that's been unearthed. The find, which was kept secret for several weeks while the site was examined and the skeleton collected, may provide valuable DNA samples.

What did the Dodo look like?
There is very little solid evidence of the dodo’s appearance. The head and foot in the Museum represent the most complete remains of a single dodo. Many other museums have dodo skeletons, but these are composites, made up from the bones of different birds. Top

Their schtick was that Dunbar was a dodo, not just by species but also by mental capacity. Fennimore was constantly taking advantage of him, but usually wound up outsmarting himself. About Mauritius
Old Print of a Dodo The dodo was a flightless bird native only to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The dodo was a flightless member of the pigeon family. Fully grown dodos weighted about 23 kg (50 pounds). Around 1505 the Portuguese became the first Europeans to discover the dodo. By 1681 it had been driven to extinction by humans and the feral dogs, pigs, rats, and monkeys introduced by Europeans to Mauritius. The dodo was not the only Mauritian bird driven to extinction in recent centuries. Of the 45 bird species originally found, only 21 still survive. Two bird species closely related to the dodo also became extinct: the Réunion solitaire (raphus solitarius) . by 1746, and the Rodrigues solitaire (pezophaps solitaria ) by 1790. Reports of sightings of living dodos in the 1990s on Mauritius prompted William J. Gibbons to mount expeditions to search for them. None were found.
