The NSF Water Treatment Device Certification Program requires extensive product testing and unannounced audits of production facilities. The goal of this program is to provide assurance to consumers that the water treatment devices they are purchasing meet the design, material, and performance requirements of national standards.
Selecting and Using Water Treatment Devices
Many consumers have difficulty determining whether they actually need a water treatment system or they are not sure what type of system would be best for them. The choice regarding whether or not to install and use a water treatment system is up to you. If you have identified a specific contaminant whose presence in your water is causing you concern, you can use the drinking water treatment units online product database to try to locate products that have been certified to reduce that specific contaminant.

Please improve this article if you can. (November 2007) Tap water Mineral Water Water of sufficient quality to serve as drinking water is termed potable water whether it is used as such or not. Although many sources are utilized by humans, some contain disease vectors or pathogens and cause long-term health problems if they do not meet certain water quality guidelines. Water that is not harmful for human beings is sometimes called safe water, water which is not contaminated to the extent of being unhealthy. The available supply of drinking water is an important criterion of carrying capacity , the population level that can be supported by planet Earth Typically water supply networks deliver single or multiple qualities of water, whether it is to be used for drinking, washing or landscape irrigation ; one counterexample is urban China , where drinking water can be optionally delivered by a separate tap. In the United States , public drinking water is governed by the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). Among other provisions, it protects the right of employees to report potential violations.

March 10, 2008
Downing watered down sex hormones The Associated Press reported today: A vast array of pharmaceuticals - including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones - have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans , an Associated Press investigation shows.... In the course of a five-month inquiry, the AP discovered that drugs have been detected in the drinking water supplies of 24 major metropolitan areas - from Southern California to Northern New Jersey , from Detroit to Louisville The AP would like have found more but reported only 28 of 62 of those major metropolitan areas even test their water. Of 52 small water plants the AP contacted - at least 1 in each state - 51 reported not testing and 1 refused to respond. An unnamed "sex hormone" was noted in San Francisco drinking water as well as other unnamed "hormones," according to the AP , along with "synthetic hormones from birth control pills," according to the Washington Post Can't find the name of the SF sex hormone. If anyone knows, please comment. This story and others for quite some time have documented that fish in waterways are affected by human artificial sex hormones:
  • Some fish we eat may carry enough estrogen to cause human breast cancer.

Many of these disinfection by-products (DBPs) have been shown to cause adverse health effects at high doses in experimental animals, and epidemiology studies have suggested potential risks of cancer and adverse reproductive outcomes in human populations. EPA is currently working with the water industry and other stakeholders to determine the need for more stringent standards for DBPs found in drinking water.
      Scientific Questions:
      • What are the health effects of DBPs in communities served by disinfected drinking water?

Downloads Drinking Water and Human Health Background Water is vital for life. Good quality drinking water should be free from unsafe concentrations of nitrates, pathogens, metals, and organic contaminants. It should also be of acceptable taste and odor. Florida has abundant water resources, ranking 3 rd in the nation in total water area. Fresh water resources are also ample in the state, particularly groundwater, but much of it has water-quality issues. Water Quality and Human Health Contaminants in drinking water can cause serious health effects in humans. There are two kinds of health hazards that humans can be exposed to: acute toxicity and chronic toxicity. Acute toxicity is defined as one in which a negative effect is reported within 24 to 48 hours of water consumption. Conversely, chronic toxicity has long-term effects that occur with low but frequent exposure to a contaminant. Nitrate in drinking water has indirect effects. Nitrate when consumed by infants may be transformed into nitrite, which can then cause methemoglobinemia, or "blue baby" syndrome. Nitrite can also convert to nitrosamine, which is associated with certain types of cancers. Standards of Drinking Water The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has established standards for drinking water that limits the concentrations of harmful substances. Drinking water standards also establish limits on aesthetic water qualities like organic and inorganic constituents, odor, color, pH, and total dissolved solids.

Drinking Water Help yourself to a healthy home! Should You Be Concerned? Every day Americans drink more than one billion glasses of water! We depend on water to clean, cook, fix baby food and formula, and bathe. If you are like most people, you trust that your water is safe. This is mostly true. Public drinking water in the U.S. is safe for most healthy people. If you have a well or other private water supply, it is your responsibility to keep the drinking water safe. Whether your water comes from a public or private source, take steps to make sure your water is safe for consumption. There are times when your home water supply may not be safe. Using unsafe water to drink or prepare food can make you sick. Children may have more problems than adults because:
    • For their size, children drink more than adults.
