    Molecular Ecology
    Edited by:
    Loren Rieseberg
Impact Factor: Molecular Ecology publishes papers that utilize molecular genetic techniques to address consequential questions in ecology, evolution, behaviour and conservation. Studies may employ neutral markers for inference about ecological and evolutionary processes or examine ecologically important genes and their products directly. We discourage papers that are primarily descriptive and are relevant only to the taxon being studied. Papers reporting on molecular marker development, molecular diagnostics, barcoding, or DNA taxonomy, or technical methods should be re-directed to our sister journal, Molecular Ecology Resources . Research areas of interest to Molecular Ecology include:
    • population structure and phylogeography
    • reproductive strategies
    • relatedness and kin selection
    • sex allocation
    • population genetic theory
    • analytical methods development
    • conservation genetics
    • speciation genetics
    • microbial biodiversity
    • evolutionary dynamics of QTLs
    • ecological interactions
    • molecular adaptation and environmental genomics

Views: 2,518 The mission of the Institute for Social Ecology (ISE) is the creation of educational experiences that enhance people's understanding of their relationship to the natural world and each other. By necessity, this involves the ISE in programs that deepen students' awareness of self and others, help them to think critically, and expand their perception of the creative potentialities for human action. The purpose of the ISE's programs is the preparation of well-rounded students who can work effectively as participants in the process of ecological reconstruction. Murray Bookchin, ISE founder, dies at 85 Murray Bookchin Obituary
    Murray Bookchin Tribute
ISE Update, Summer 2006 In March of 2006, the Institute for Social Ecology completed the sale of its Maple Hill campus in Plainfield, Vermont. This is the end of an era for us, bringing us to a new beginning for the Institute. After 31 years of offering campus-based educational programs for both graduate and undergraduate students, the Institute's active membership has reaffirmed a commitment the core principles of social ecology and begun mapping out our plans for the future. We will continue to pursue our mission of education toward an ecological society, and are exploring exciting new ways to bring social ecology into today's urgent public debates.

The Graduate Degree Program in Ecology (GDPE) at Colorado State University is an interdisciplinary program for students with interests in a wide range of ecological subjects. The Program's goal is to provide advanced training in current ecological methods, theories, concepts, controversies and applications by drawing together individuals and synthesizing knowledge from a wide variety of traditional disciplinary areas of science. The Program is jointly administered by the Warner College of Natural Resources and the College of Natural Sciences , on behalf of all 6 colleges with member departments. We currently have 113 faculty members from 17 departments.

Saying Goodbye to a Good Friend
The Urban Ecology Center is sad to announce the passing of a dear friend, donor and Board of Directors member Richard (Dick) Burke. When the Center was still working out of a double wide trailer in Riverside Park, Dick was able to envision with us a community center that taught science and nature to disadvantaged urban youth. He energized our building campaign with a substantial lead gift through his Trinity Foundation Fund of The Greater Milwaukee Foundation. He requested no recognition nor naming rights, just that we stay true to our vision. Throughout the years we knew we could count on Dick for his generous support, level head and quiet persistence. Dick's family have generously requested that people so inclined make a donation to the Urban Ecology Center in lieu of flowers.

    to the global consumer culture
The International Society for Ecology and Culture (ISEC) is a non-profit organisation concerned with the protection of both biological and cultural diversity. Our emphasis is on education for action: moving beyond single issues to look at the more fundamental influences that shape our lives. Our activities include:
    • Books, reports, conferences and films Local, national and international networking. Community initiatives. Campaigning.
We have worked in more than a dozen countries, from the UK and the USA to Thailand and Bhutan. Our programme in Ladakh, or 'Little Tibet', where we have been running a wide range of 'hands on' projects since 1975, has won international acclaim for countering the negative effects of conventional development in that region. ISEC has now established an 'Ancient Futures Network' to bring together groups and individuals from every corner of the world that are struggling to maintain their cultural integrity in the face of economic globalisation.
