Welcome
Now celebrating its 40th year, the UC Davis Graduate Group in Ecology (GGE) is the largest and most comprehensive ecology graduate training group of its kind. Offering unparalleled diversity and depth in course work and research opportunities, the group is recognized as a center for academic and training excellence. The group's diverse and dynamic collection of 200 students and 125 faculty come from 24 different departments/ units on campus. Offering both Master's and Ph.D. degrees, the Graduate Group is organized into nine areas of emphasis that include both basic and applied ecology. The GGE defines ecology broadly to span scales from genes to landscapes and explicitly includes human ecology and policy. GGE members become the professionals best trained to protect our natural resources. They strive to develop basic ecological theory as well as work with resource management agencies to help solve ecological problems. US News and World Report ranked UC Davis as first in the nation for graduate programs in ecology/evolutionary biology! See the US News site for details. The National Research Council, ranking graduate programs in Ecology and Evolution, placed UC Davis in the top 5, nationally. The ISI ranks schools and colleges in terms of research productivity. UC Davis is the top ranked ecology program in the world.

Ecological Cities
An ecological city is a city in balance with nature. Cities are at the centre of nearly all human activity. If we fail to evolve human settlements in balance with nature, our civilisation will fail. We can make ecocities here and now by incorporating energy and water conservation features in buildings, industry and transport, and by cultivating natural ecosystems and human communities in urban public spaces.

Christie Walk is a medium density housing development located in downtown Adelaide which combines many ecologically sustainable and community enhancing features. It was initiated by UEA as a demonstration project, to promote nature and people friendly urban development by example.

Pumalin Park , a project of the Conservation Land Trust, is comprised of more than 700,000 acres and functions as a national park under a private initiative. While most of the park is pristine wilderness, it has extensive public access and is a popular destination. Created in 2000, Conservacion Patagonica has already placed 450,000 acres of critical Patagonian habitat into permanent protection. Conservacion Patagonica has successfully created one Argentine national park, and is in the process of creating a second in Chile.

Center for Demography and Ecology
Welcome to the Center for Demography and Ecology (CDE) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
CDE is a multi-disciplinary faculty research cooperative for social scientific demographic research whose membership includes sociologists, rural sociologists, economists, epidemiologists, and statisticians. CDE is one of the leading centers of social science research in the world, as indicated by the scholarly productivity of its faculty, the level of extramural funding secured by researchers, the production and distribution of high quality demographic data, and the quality of its graduate training program. The intellectual and collegial environment of the Center makes it an exciting and stimulating place in which to conduct research. Many CDE members have overlapping memberships in cooperating research and training units, which include the Institute on Aging, the Institute for Research on Poverty, the LaFollette Insitute for Public Affairs, the Applied Population Research Laboratory, the population and health program in the Department of Population Health Sciences, the University of Wisconsin Survey Center, and the Social Systems Research Institute and a variety of academic departments.

Two Years In: Revisiting the Publication Niche for Avian Conservation and Ecology
Deux ans plus tard: retour sur le domaine de publication d’ Écologie et conservation des oiseaux
Thomas Nudds and Marc-André Villard
Our home page looks slightly different in this issue. However, the changes signify something much more important than their subtle nature might imply. Specifically, the ‘Focus and Scope’ for the journal – its publication niche – was confirmed, clarified, and shifted to a position of greater prominence over the last few months. On this two-year anniversary of ACE-ÉCO, it is appropriate to ask how we are doing relative to our declared publication niche. Between 2005 and 2007, total submissions (new and revised manuscripts) doubled to almost 2/wk; half of those in 2007 were resubmissions. Rejection rates fell from 60% to 44%. These trends are largely due to a decrease in submissions that did not fit the publication niche.

Description
Publisher's acknowledgement to Reviewers 2005

Forest Ecology and Management publishes scientific articles that link forest ecology with forest management, and that apply biological, ecological and social knowledge to the management and conservation of man-made and natural forests. The scope of the journal includes all forest ecosystems of the world. A refereeing process ensures the quality and international interest of the manuscripts accepted for publication. The journal aims to encourage communication between scientists in disparate fields who share a common interest in ecology and forest management, and to bridge the gap between research workers and forest managers in the field to the benefit of both.
