Apply Ecopsychology MA in Transpersonal Psychology The Ecopsychology degree concentration integrates psychology and ecology in the study of human-nature relationships. At Naropa University, contemplative practice and transpersonal psychology provide a foundation for this integration. Each year, students take two courses on campus in the summer and two courses online in both fall and spring semesters. Students also attend a three-day course in Boulder each winter. The first year is devoted to study of ecopsychology, ecology, transpersonal psychology and contemplative practice. In the second year, students complete both intellectual and service-learning projects, in addition to taking elective courses. Educational objectives of the program
  • To provide a thorough overview of the intellectual, philosophical and practical aspects of ecopsychology. To deepen our understanding of and connection with nature and to articulate our emerging worldview of the human-nature relationship. To contribute in some tangible way to the earth and our communities as a result of our insights, actions and service work.

By Robin R. Rathbun Remember learning to ride a bicycle? After a few wobbly starts and unexpected tumbles, it worked. Exhilarating! That "I did it" is experiential learning, the heart of discovery. When we finally figure it out for ourselves, we really Get It, and we don't forget it. Bring to mind an experience in nature; something that either happened when you were a child, like your first camping adventure, or a moment of tremendous awe, like seeing the Grand Canyon or the ocean for the first time. Can you remember the smells? How you felt? The colors around you? Through a variety of experiences like wilderness quests, eco pilgrimages and sacred passage retreats, people are given time to be in nature, to simply be with the world. As Elias Amidon, co-director of the Boulder Institute for Nature and the Human Spirit, says, "The word 'ecopsychology' has an academic ring to it, but it is, in fact, something very personal and intimate. It's about our sense of belonging—or not belonging—on this earth." Ecopsychology, however, is more than just a new take on the environmental movement, although the roots began growing from ideas expressed by Rachel Carson, John Muir and Albert Schweitzer. Ecopsychology may, in fact, have been started in the mid-'70s by a Norwegian philosopher named Arne Naess who looked at ecology in an ethical framework. Rather than protecting the earth's resources for our future gain, i.e. being good "stewards" for the planet, he suggested that we should save the planet because of a reverence for life, all living beings. This became known as "deep ecology."

There seems to me to be a dearth of qualitative, phenomenologically based studies in this area, which would attempt to reveal, in a non-biased way, without possible results skewing hypotheses, the significance of the type of psychological and possible spiritual processes and changes that have been reported and can take place during extended wilderness stays. I believe the relative absence of presuppositions involving hypotheses will enable themes to emerge from the twelve interviews I have conducted as part of this study. These themes then will have come more or less directly from my co-researcher’s (interviewee's) experiences of wilderness. Staying true to the spirit of phenomenological inquiry and watching themes emerge organically, so to speak, is both inspiring and encouraging. What this and other similar studies have found could open the doors for further research in this area. One point of this study is just that; to further open, for heuristic purposes, phenomenological inquiry and qualitative research in this area by helping to formulate more ideas and questions regarding the nature of wilderness experience and its implications. It is my hope that this will facilitate the honoring, on a wider scale, of these processes and experiences and take a step toward a deeper understanding of interrelationship and the profoundly symbiotic nature of our existence with our beloved and endangered earth.

    Ecopsychology
"To preserve nature is to preserve the matrix through which we can experience our souls and the soul of the planet Earth"* Ecopsychology is a synthesis of the psychological and the ecological. It is concerned with human behaviour but assumes the psyche to be bonded to the Earth. Humans' interactions with the natural environment, therefore, take on special significance in that they both reveal and influence states of mental health. The bond to planet Earth may first be read as a deep emotional one or biophilia. Biophilia is the innate attraction felt by human beings towards other living things that generates a sense of shared identity with all life. To love the landscape and feel compassion for all its creatures is a totally natural and healthy state of mind for a human being. The environment is not that which surrounds us, it is that of which we are a part. We are not separate from Nature. It is utterly reasonable in this respect to want to become closer to the natural world, to care for it and learn from it. It follows that to be disconnected from Nature, cut off from it physically, intellectually and emotionally, represents a dangerous state of affairs for we humans, one that leads to personal difficulties and wider social problems (not to mention devastating ecological disasters as well). Theodore Roszak* goes further in his contribution to the field of ecopsychology by proposing the notion of an ecological unconscious, an ecological dimension to the human personality that is natural and universal. For him, there is an ecological intelligence deeply rooted in the human psyche. Or rather, the human psyche is located inside a greater intelligence, the psyche of mother Earth herself. The human mind (or spirit), just like the human body, is an integral strand of the web of life. If the human unconscious is at least partly ecologically motivated, then, once again, disconnexion from Nature is injurious to human beings' mental and emotional health.

        • UK Monday, 29 August 2005 It is almost de rigueur in some metropolitan circles to yearn for a simpler life in the country. And even those whose ambitions do not stretch to pressing olives or breeding pigs hotfoot it to the mountains or seaside at every opportunity. When the stresses of everyday life get too much, we take a walk in the park or have an hour in the garden. Science has long recognised this instinctive attraction to nature. Now, an emerging branch of psychology suggests it may be fundamental to our health and wellbeing - and to the future of the planet. It may sound romantic and New Age, but the theory is gaining scientific credibility. In evolutionary terms, we are stalled in prehistory. And just as our bodies are unable to adapt to a permanent surplus of calories and the invention of the automobile, so our minds are unable to acclimatise to the peculiar stresses of high-density urban living. We are, deep down, creatures of the countryside, even if most of us see less of it than ever before.

Bringing Nature's Wisdom into Our Daily Lives
Nature knows how to create balance and harmony in all aspects of life and when necessary
to heal and regenerate itself. As part of Nature, we have this ability too. The good feelings
we have when we spend time in Nature are evidence of this truth. Ecopsychology, the study of the relationship between our mental and physical well-being

reconnect with our innate abilities to live in harmony and balance in all aspects of our

Perhaps it is the very act of isolating ourselves, seperating from the rest of nature, living in our skins, behind our walls, inside our cars, alone, which allows the feeling of being different, superior and therefore entitled. We use the age-old-worn defenses of projection and denial, (it's your, his, her, their problem,) which simply reinforces the idea of seperateness, and like all good vicious cycles leads to more suffering, over consumption and damage to the biosphere. Our survival depends not on what we acquire, but embracing our interdependence and interconnection with all of life. Spotlight on Ecopsychology The following is a list of classes that relate to various aspects of Ecopsychology. Most of these classes were offered in the past. The particular electives offered by the Institute vary at any given time. The school tries to be responsive to the particular interests of the current student body and aims to have the curriculum reflect those interests. The number of current classes that fall under the category of the Ecopsychology depends on both teacher availability and student interest. Information on current classes can be found in the academic catalog. Ecopsychology and Deep Ecology Ecopsychology combines an understanding of how the psyche is influenced by the environment with how psychological orientation influences interaction with the environment. Deep ecology extends that sense to include how people can extend their identification with the environment in order to work toward planetary healing.
