Publisher Comments: This pathfinding collection shows how the health of the planet is inextricably linked to the psychological health of humanity, individually and collectively. As such, it is sure to become a definitive work for the burgeoning ecopsychology movement, which is both a new beginning for environmentalism and a revolution in modern psychology. Collected here are writings from the premier psychotherapists, thinkers, and eco-activists working in the field, including: James Hillman, world-renowned Jungian analyst, relating the one core issue for all psychology - the nature and limits of human identity - to the condition of the planet

BOOK REVIEW:
Ecopsychology: Restoring the Earth/Healing the Mind
edited by Theodore Roszak, Mary E. Gomes, and Allen D. Kanner (S.F. Sierra Club Books, 1995).
by Harold W. Wood, Jr.
This collection of 26 essays by leaders in the new field of ecopsychology is in three parts: (1) Theoretical Perspectives, (2) Ecopsychology in Practice, and (3) Cultural Diversity and Political Engagement. While the topics covered are numerous and eclectic, and collection of writers diverse, it seems that the whole book is geared toward reaching the final third. That is to say, the intent of the book is intensely political, in the sense of using ecopsychology to contribute to protection of the Earth. The writers featured include such luminaries as Theodore Roszak, Lester Brown, Paul Shepard, Joanna Macy, David Abram, and our own Universal Pantheist Society board member William Cahalan. Some are environmentalists, but perhaps most of the authors are clinical psychologists. The central part of the book is not the only part to emphasize the practical; even "Theoretical Perspectives" comes from people with profound actual experience or expertise in the field. One essay that stood out as being important to Pantheists was "The Ecology of Grief" by Phyllis Windle. As I have argued elsewhere (

Ecopsychology
SCHUMACHER COLLEGE
An International Centre for Ecological Studies Ecopsychology by John Seed We have all heard about the massive assault on our life-support systems. Yet it has not changed our behaviour except in rather trivial ways. How will we change our thinking and our behaviour to bring our technologies and lifestyles into harmony with the biological constraints of Earthly existence? What is needed? Not more horrifying statistics surely. Everybody already knows. We feel helpless and disempowered as the technologic juggernaut rolls along. Yet psychology appears to be too busy to address such things. What are the matters of over-riding urgency preoccupying psychology? Where is everybody? Playing at business as usual. Fiddling while Rome burns. Shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic.

ECO, PSYCHE, LOGOS: Knowing that the Earth is home to our soul. In spite of the modern delusion of alienation, of separation from the living Earth, we are NOT aliens, we belong here. The human psych too is Earth-born, th e result of 4000 million years of continuous evolution and the complex, exquisite biology from which psyche emerged inevitably remains the matrix, the grounding of any sane psychology. We have all heard the news:Dr. Raymond Dassman, Professor of Biology, University of Califoria: "The 3rd World War has begun: it is being waged against the Earth." Most scientists agree that a million or more species will become extinct between now and the turn of the century, a rate of extinction some thousands of times the natural background rate. etc. etc. etc. We have all heard the news. Yet it has not changed our behaviour except in rather trivial ways.

Ecopsychology Allows Moonbats to Wallow
The official organ of moonbattery reports on a new field dedicated to indulging the weak in their neuroses. It's called "ecopsychology": Like traditional therapy, ecopsychology examines personal interactions and family systems, while also encouraging patients to develop a relationship to nature. "Global warming has added an extra layer of anxiety to what people are already feeling," said Sandy Shulmire of Portland, Ore., a psychologist and practitioner of ecopsychology. One ecopsycho treats herself by rubbing tree trunks and sniffing shells left behind by squirrels. Anyone who really wanted to help casualties of enviromoonbattery toward mental health would start by cluing them in that global warming is a farce and the planet will be just fine. However, the point of psychology seems to be not to cure pathology, but to wallow in it. No doubt ecopsychological treatment regimens will be lavishly financed by you, once socialized medicine has been imposed. Progressives wallowing in ecopsychology On a tip from Byron.

Prepared for the panel on "'Nature Religion' as a Theoretical Construct: Reflections from an Emerging Field" held at the American Academy of Religion annual meeting, Orlando, Florida, on 23 November 1998. Daniel C. Noel
Vermont College of Norwich University As a psychologist of religion, I should like to make some observations about the relationship between the human psyche and the other-than-human natural world, in particular as one tradition in psychology sees that relationship. Let me begin by quoting words I take to be both exemplary for the tradition in question and pertinent to our discussion of "nature religion": Yet there is so much that fills me: plants, animals, clouds, day and night, and the eternal in man. The more uncertain I have felt about myself, the more there has grown up in me a feeling of kinship with all things. In fact it seems to me as if that alienation which so long separated me from the world has become transferred into my own inner world, and has revealed to me an unexpected unfamiliarity with myself This striking passage appears on the last page of C.G. Jung's autobiography

A short note from owner of ParaMind Brainstorming Software: I believe in eco-psychology, which states by getting closer to nature and animals we become more whole, and I think this is one thing that can help stop global warming and help people tremendously, such as get some people off psychiatric medication, which can be dangerous if the wrong people become dependent on it. When people take interest in sustainable energy technology and the environment, they may be surprised how well they are rewarded. Those of us who have pets already experience this first hand. Thoughts on Ecopsychology: Reconnecting With Nature
Green Philosophy by Christina Newnham Today we welcome Christina Newnham to the writing team. As the post indicates, Christina writes out of Queenstown, New Zealand, and will be covering topics related to energy and buildings. Welcome Christina! I live in Queenstown, New Zealand… the ‘shaky isles’, but in a town where the force of nature is felt all too often, how is it that the populous of my town appear to have forgotten that they are a part of this nature and that it is not simply there for their pleasure? Why do we fail to see the upshot of the things we do upon the rest of nature? Why do we feel no remorse about driving a choking vehicle through NZ’s pristine West Coast rainforests? Where has our connection with nature gone and how can we get it back; why do we need to get it back? When the first settlers arrived in Queenstown, all they had was the natural environment around them. However, what did they do? In true Victorian style, they saw it only as a resource and destroyed it to meet their own human needs; deforestation, agriculture, etc. When the gold rush arrived, this mentality escalated and continued into the present day. Today, surrounded by mountains, lakes and forests, Queenstown sits like an oasis of human desire, nestled away nearly 200 kilometres from the nearest large settlement. Yet, it has seemingly no connection with its natural surroundings, other than ‘popping out into the wilderness’ for an ‘experience’ or to walk the dog, bike, ski, etc. Indeed, Queenstown is certainly not the most environmentally conscious town, but why so, when it is constantly reminded of the natural environment from being surrounded by it?

As recent history demonstrates, scientists are as willing to work for a Tojo, a Hitler, or a Stalin as for the free nations of the West. " - Ed Abbey Quite a few web sources that I browse had decided to republish the results of a small, but interesting, psychological research project that was conducted recently. The basic premise of the whole project was that accompanying a verbal request with a light touch on the arm will produce a greater number of 'positive' responses to the request than if it were unaccompanied by the tactile element. Their results confirmed the hypothesis when statistically significant margins showed that a light touch on the arm was effective at producing a 'yes' in situations that would most likely have otherwise produced a 'no'. About Me
GORBY
I am Alex Gourevitch, currently a Ph.D student in political science at Columbia University. I used to work as a political journalist, and still publish from time to time. I started this blog as a way of breathing something other than the rarefied air of the ivory tower. I think the boundary between the public domain and academia is too artificially and starkly drawn. Unlike many personal blogs, I don't intend to comment on everything that pops into my head. I have a few specific interests and debates that I want to stay close to - American politics, environmentalism, human rights and foreign policy, and the war on terror. I used to co-edit a blog called Against the War on Terror (www.againstwot.com), so occasionally I'll revive those topics as well.

ECOLITERACY
Ecological literacy might be called "ecowisdom" because it encompasses such a broad array of understandings, knowledge, attitudes, and experience. I began using the term “ecoliteracy” to indicate the learning we need to seek in all dimensions of human life: intellectual, psychological, somatic, social, and spiritual. As someone developing ecoliteracy, I aspire to the following capacities:
  • awareness of our interconnectedness and kinship with all life a sense of wonder and gratitude for the world a strong sense of physical and spiritual connection to land and place a widening of identification beyond the individual ego to the "ecological self" an understanding of basic concepts of ecology and systems thinking, and perceiving relationships among humans and all living systems through these lenses comprehension of the major ecological and social crises we face and their interrelationships the willingness to experience both the pain and joy of the world lived values of cultural diversity, equality, justice, and inclusiveness

ECOPSYCHOLOGY
An Interview with Leslie Gray
SLOANE: What do you mean by perennial shamanism? SLOANE: How does shamanism relate to ecopsychology? GRAY: The worldview of shamanism is that health equals balanced relationships with all living things. When someone is ill, shamanism attempts to restore power to them by putting them back in harmony with life. This idea that all things are connected, while a very ancient concept, is also a concept for the future. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, as we teeter on the brink of global catastrophe, it is precisely a shamanistic worldview that is our greatest hope. SLOANE: So ecopsychology has its roots in shamanism?

My favorite Ecopsychology Quotes-
-David Abram
Key insight of ecofeminism:
4 TASKS OF ECOPSYCHOLOGY-
as defined by Andy Fischer in Radical Ecopsychology The Psychological Task - to acknowledge and betther understand the human- nature relationship as relationship.
The Philosophical Task - to place psyche (soul/mind) back into the Natural world. Heal the split.
The Practical Task - to develop therapeutic and recollective practices toward an ecological society.
The Critical Task - to engage in ecopsychologically based criticism. Note- I am attracted to the philosophical task, because I see the role of poetry and performance in this mission. I believe we need to be rewoven back into our connectedness in a poetic, inviting, and beautiful way. We need the grace and magic of the arts for this mission.
Check out Audette's Summary of the Key Points of Ecopsychology

Thoughts in the vein of Solutions: - Experiential embodied education - Anything encouraging and cultivating feelings and experiences of connectedness. That which illuminates context, root causes, or promoting alternative ways of seeing, investing, and being.
