Deforestation in Sumatra Linked to Extinction, Climate Change

Despite the heft of a new 72-page analysis in which 16 authors link global consequences to 25 years of deforestation in the Sumatran province of Riau, Michael Stuewe of WWF can sum it all up in a word. “Brutal," says Stuewe, one of the authors.

Building Communities Preserves the Environment

The Caucasus is one of the world’s most biologically rich and threatened areas. It’s here where our support is enabling the Fund for Biodiversity Conservation of the Armenian Highland to help rebuild economic stability for local communities.

Welcome to the Forest Ecosystem Dynamics (FED) Project WWW Server
BACKGROUND INFORMATION. The Forest Ecosystem Dynamics (FED) Project is concerned with modeling and monitoring ecosystem processes and patterns in response to natural and anthropogenic effects. The project uses coupled ecosystem models and remote sensing models and measurements to predict and observe ecosystem change. The overall objective of the FED project is to link and use models of forest dynamics, soil processes, and canopy energetics to understand how ecosystem response to change affects patterns and processes in northern and boreal forests and to assess the implications for global change. See Conceptual Diagram for model schematic. The Forest Ecosystem Dynamics World-Wide-Web server has been online since July 1994. The FED server was created for the dissemination of project information, to archive numerous spatial and scientific data sets, and demonstrate the linking of ecosystem and remote sensing models. 2013: Survival or Extinction for the CDM?
In late January, the European Union unveiled a proposed two-pronged scheme for reducing greenhouse gas emissions once the Kyoto Protocol expires at the end of 2012. The scheme is designed to bring the world on board a post-Kyoto emission reduction regime, but participants say it will kill off many clean development projects in poor countries and raise the cost of reducing emissions in Europe. The Ecosystem Marketplace examines the impact of these latest proposals on the future of the CDM.

Teacher Page Introduction W h a t m a k e s a n e c o s y s t e m w o r k You have just been introduced to one particular ecosystem. You have discovered that the world that we live in is much more complex than you could ever realize. Our environment is very diverse. In the Deciduous Forest you can find things such as deciduous trees, fertile soil, chipmunks, squirrels, mosquitoes, spiders, frogs, and much more. We also live in a unique environment because we have warm and cold seasons. Have you ever wondered about how plants and animals survive in the desert? What about the plant and animal life in the oceans? The rainforest also has an assortment of different plants and animals. Have you ever imagined the complex life in the grasslands or the frigid environment of the Arctic?
The Task
You will be working with a group of 2-3 students researching an animal from a particular ecosystem. After you have chosen your animal you will then become that animal and try to find out which ecosystem best fits its needs. In doing this you will learn a lot about your animals ecosystem and be able to find answers to the following questions:

Workshop Description
The weblogging community continues to evolve: weblogs are gaining more and more exposure, the number of bloggers continues to grow and the contribution of individual bloggers is becoming significant and compelling. The dynamics of the blogosphere, found in trackbacks, citation links, blog-rolls, comments, tags, shared topics and interests provides a facinating domain of study for researchers from all academic and commercial fields including text mining, social network analysis, computational linguistics, business and marketing intelligence, libarary sciences, taxonometrics, graph theory and data visualization.

And VCs are eager to help Eighteen months ago John Roberts, Clint Oram, and Jacob Taylor decided to quit their jobs at Epiphany, a maker of customer-relationship software. The trio wanted to target the same market, but write a new application developed using open-source code. It took them only three months to create the program and just another month to close their first round of funding. Little more than a year later, their company, SugarCRM, has given away more than 325,000 copies of its software, and raised a second round of capital, for a total of $7.75 million. ONE STEP AT A TIME.
