Lewis Publishers, Inc., 458 pp. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND ORGANIZATION Ecotox icology is the science that examines the fate and effects of toxins and contaminants in and on ecosystems, and t his course is intended to be an ecologically-oriented examination of the study of toxins in the environment .  Of course, ecotoxicologists do not all study at the ecosystem level, so we’ll examine fates and effects from the organism level to the ecosystem level.              T oxicology typically examines effects of toxins at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels.  However, findings at those levels have not been well integrated into higher biological levels, nor are effects at higher levels always predictable based on findings at lower levels.  Ecotoxicology attempts to integrate and study effects at multiple levels of biological organization.  We will use the backdrop of current ecological and evolutionary theories to help organize the course and put toxicological findings in perspective.

    • expansion of the scientific underpinning of regulatory decisions concerning environmental and human health; development and evaluation of improved alternative testing methods to reduce reliance on toxicity tests using traditional laboratory mammals and to provide scientific data more useful for risk assessment; development of new approaches employing relevant, representative species for detecting adverse effects of agents in the environment; characterization of the toxicity of agents or media containing environmental toxins and toxicants using appropriate models; investigation of approaches for the extrapolation of data derived from natural sentinel species to other exposed species, including humans; evaluation of test systems using alternative species that could potentially replace laboratory mammals used in conventional toxicity test systems;

Mission Statement Arkansas State University Ecotoxicology Research Facility (ERF) is a multi-user laboratory facilitating intercollegiate research and collaboration with other universities, state and federal agencies, industries, and various interest groups. The ERF utilizes standard US EPA test protocols and develops innovative techniques to measure environmental parameters and investigate ecosystem function. As a US EPA certified laboratory we specialize in laboratory and in situ biomonitoring to measure fate and effects of known and emerging contaminants for use in environmental forecasting. Ongoing Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Good Laboratory Practice within the ERF results in scientifically sound research for use in environmental management decisions. The ERF is located on the ASU Jonesboro Main Campus. Our Northeast Arkansas community is home to diverse industries including agriculture, food processing, manufacturing, service and retail. Jonesboro is a progressive community supporting and interacting with the University through its public services and interest groups.

What is an Ecotoxicologist?
So you want to study pollution? Ecotoxicologists study pollution and its effects on different ecosystems. Toxicology involves the study of toxic substances on living organisms. New chemical substances developed by man typically undergo toxological tests before they go to market. Such substances include drugs, cleaning compounds, pesticides, food additives, and all sorts of other things that we use every day. As man strives to advance technology and invent new compounds, waste by-products are often generated. Many of these wastes end up in the environment where they cause damage. We call these unused wastes "pollution" when nature and the environment is unable to process and assimilate them without adverse effects. Ecotoxicologists study the effects of these ever-increasing compounds on ecosystems. As an ecotoxicologist you will look at where these pollutants end up in the environment and what sorts of damage they cause to the ecological balance of an ecosystem. Some pollutants accumulate in the food chain, as smaller organisms are eaten in large numbers by larger oganisms, the concentration of pollutants builds up in the living tissue in higher concentrations as they move up the food chain; this is called bioacumulation . In some cases, the pollutants build up in a particular organism in higher concentration than the surrounding environment (air, water, soil, etc.); this is called

ardea consulting was established in 1997 to provide science-based consulting services specializing in ecological risk assessments , avian and wildlife toxicology and ecotoxicology . We work with clients to provide technical solutions to address regulatory and other ecological or environmental toxicology issues.
Since its founding, ardea consulting has worked principally on evaluating pesticide effects on birds and other wildlife. The experience gained is readily transferable to other contaminant groups. Projects have included field evaluation of potential exposure of wildlife to pesticides, metals, or PCBs, participation in ecological risk assessments, and preparation of research papers on various topics. In the summer of 2001, we relocated f rom Morrisville, Pennsylvania to Woodland, California. Our ecotoxicologists travel as needed; work has been conducted throughout the U.S. and Canada.
ardea provides technical advice and services while keeping the solutions as straightforward as possible. We fully investigate all issues and all available information is studied before we propose generating additional and possibly costly new data.

      Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology
      Environmental chemists study how molecular interactions and macroscopic transport phenomena determine the spatial and temporal distribution of chemicals in the environment. It is the environmental distribution and concentration of contaminants that ultimately determine the dose to humans and other organisms. Ecotoxicologists study the transport, fate, and effects of toxic substances in ecosystems so as to improve our understanding of exposure and stress (hazards) to both individuals and populations. This requires interdisciplinary approaches that draw heavily on chemistry, toxicology, and ecology. The curriculum described here provides students with core courses in toxicology, chemistry, and statistics. Electives are selected by the graduate committee to complement graduate research in environmental chemistry or ecotoxicology.

Reviewed by Judith S. Weis, Department of Biological Sciences, Rutgers University, Newark, NJ 07102 This book is a collection of papers on fish toxicology (not "ecotoxicology" however). All the chapter authors are English or European, with the exception of Hinton, one of the editors. The first four chapters deal with responses of fish cells ( in vitro or in vivo ) to toxicants. They deal with cell morphology, toxic mechanisms, biomarkers, biotransformations, and genotoxicology. At the end of their chapter, Monod et al. admit that the connection of cell responses to higher levels of organization "has been given very little attention in fish." The next two chapters deal with biochemical responses, one focusing on cytochrome P-450 localization and induction, its usefulness as a biomarker, and the use of immunochemical techniques as a biomonitoring tool for detecting it. In the following chapter on oxidative stress, Lackner emphasizes that reactive oxygen species are a common by-product of xenobiotic metabolism and may be a mechanism by which some pollutants exert their toxicity. He focuses on lipid peroxidation, protein damage, and the biochemistry of detoxification systems. Hinton's chapter deals with multiple stressors in the Sacramento River watershed. He covers such non-toxicological stressors as diversion of river flow and invasive species as well as toxic metals and pesticides, and looks at the "big picture" including behavioral effects and food web alterations. This was the only chapter that was truly
