Scientists find mercury threatens next generation of loons Mar 5, 2008

The results of the 18-year study on loonsa species symbolic of northern lakes and wildernessappear in the most recent edition of Ecotoxicology. This study demonstrates how top predators such as common loons can be used as the proverbial canaries-in-the-coalmine for pollutants that concern humans as well, said David C. Evers of the BioDiversity Research Institute and lead author of the study. (EurekAlert!)

  • Development of Advanced Eutrophication Models - QEA assisted the U.S. EPA by extending a traditional eutrophication model by dynamically modeling the components of the food web responsible for most of the carbon oxidation, oxygen utilization and nutrient recycling: bacteria, protozoan, and metazoan zooplankton. EPA Aquatic Effects Assessment Model - QEA personnel developed a mathematical modeling framework for assessing the effects of toxicants on the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems. Southern California Bight Natural Resource Damage Assessment - QEA evaluated exposure pathways for p,p'DDE and total PCBs. Extensive contaminant data sets were integrated into a series of graphical representations that were presented in court testimony. Bioaccumulation models were developed for fish, birds and California sea lions to quantify pathways of exposure.

Pollutant Cycling and Ecotoxicology In the past year, our research has focused on confirmation of the presence of PCB degrading genes New Bedford Harbor sediments. To date, isolation of bph-1 and bph-4 genes from the biphenyl-degrading operon has been confirmed. DGGE of these serially diluted Aroclor treated samples revealed different banding patterns between the treatments, suggesting selection of different microbial communities in Aroclor amended dilutions. We are currently examining anaerobic microcosms amended with different PCB mixtures for differential protein expressions using proteomics. Related publications:

Quarterdeck Volume 4, Number 3, Winter 1996 Ecotoxicology in Azerbaijan John W. Bickham The Republic of Azerbaijan is facing perhaps the most serious ecological challenge in its history at a time when it is poorly prepared to deal with such a crisis. Notwithstanding the fact that the country has an adequate supply of well-trained scientists who are aware of the serious environmental problems and capable of addressing such issues, the resources available to them are woefully inadequate. We investigate the effects of oil pollution and industrial wastes on terrestrial and aquatic organisms. These studies include laboratory experiments designed to test the acute toxicity and damage to DNA caused by exposure to contaminated sediments from Baku Harbor and the industrial center of Sumgait. Baku Harbor is heavily contaminated with crude oil that leaks from various sources, especially from the nearby oil fields and a refinery. At one time, Sumgait contained about 80% of the industrial chemical manufacturing capacity of the Soviet Union. Although it operates only at about 15% capacity today, a tremendous amount of waste exists that is slowly being released into the Caspian Sea. Ecological dead zones exist in Baku Harbor and all along the north shore of the peninsula (see map on page 8). Sturgeon represent an important source of foreign capital for Azerbaijan. At one time, the Caspian Sea sturgeon fishery produced 90% of the world's caviar. The catch has declined steadily since the 1930s as a result of overfishing, poaching, pollution, and damming of the spawning rivers. To compensate for the lack of natural spawning, 17 production hatcheries were built in the states surrounding the Caspian Sea.

Toxistoichiometry: Integrating Ecological Stoichiometry and Ecotoxicology
Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry in Milwaukee on November 12 th Evaluation of toxicity is most often done by the use of standard bioassays on commonly used test organisms. For example, you can pull up an EPA-approved method for determining the acute or chronic toxicity of any chemical to Daphnia spp. Theoretically, anyone in the world can follow the same protocol and get the same result. In reality, considerable differences occur between labs and even between Daphnia strains (not to mention different species), but this overall approach has been accepted for years as a means of estimating toxicity. The problem is that this method only estimates relative toxicity within a specific context. Relating the results of these short-term, laboratory tests to real-world scenarios is not only difficult, it may be impossible. For example, frequently used protocols often provide organisms with an abundance of high-quality resources, while in nature organisms are often faced with either low quantity or low-quality resources. A number of studies have tried to understand how the effect of a toxin varies with food quantity, but few have adequately addressed how food

The Developing Role of Ecotoxicology in Industrial Ecology and Natural Capitalism
Environmental Health Perspectives August, 2000 by John Jr. Cairns
Achieving sustainable use of the planet will require a new paradigm regarding the relationship between human society and the environment and a concomitant paradigm on the responsibility of those now living to provide a quality life for their descendants for an indefinite period of time. Both industrial ecology and natural capitalism provide useful guidelines and case histories on how these two paradigm shifts might be achieved.

    WP 5: Fish ecotoxicology
    Targets Lead Contractor Lead Partners
    Targets
Previous work has indicated that fish in remote mountain lakes in Europe are exposed to high concentrations of trace metals and persistent organic pollutants and that the concentration of some organic congeners is enhanced at high elevation as a result of a cold-trapping effect. Preliminary evidence of a toxicological response by fish, most probably to PAH, constitutes one of the few cases in which a direct correspondence between exposure to one environmental marker and enzymatic dysfunction has been observed. In this workpackage we will evaluate how trace pollutants accumulate in the food chain and assess the physiological response of fish to individual and combined stresses. All samples will be analysed for trace metals and organic pollutants, and N and C isotope measurements will be made to trace food-web linkages. There will be three studies:
  • characterising the west-east gradient in contamination from Greenland to Bulgaria evaluating the relative effects of differences in food, species composition, morphotype, and elevation on pollution load at 7 Experimental sites
