45. The Tomb Of Henu

NEW: Book presentation 13 December 2007, Leuven A team from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) directed by professor Harco Willems has discovered a completely intact tomb dating to about 2050 BC at the site of Dayr al-Barsha in Middle Egypt. The burial was located in a rock cut shaft in the tomb of Uky in a vast necropolis on the southern hill of Dayr al-Barsha. This area has been under investigation since 2005 by Marleen De Meyer , who carried out the excavation of the tomb. The tomb of Uky consists of two consecutive rooms,of which the shafts in the entrance chamber had already been excavated in 2005-2006. This year the two shafts in the rear chamber were the object of research. The fill of one of these shafts, a square one in the rear of the chamber, soon turned out to be entirely different than that of robbed shafts. It consisted of almost sterile limestone debris that formed the original backfill of a shaft after a burial had taken place in ancient times. Already on the second day a small hole emerged in the north wall of the shaft, and through it an entirely intact burial chamber could be seen. Even though the burial took place over four thousand years ago, the colours on the painted objects were very fresh, and no dust even covered them. View into the intact burial chamber of Henu The chamber contained a fine and well-preserved set of tomb equipment of the late First Intermediate Period , at the dawn of the Middle Kingdom (approximately 2050 BC). When found, the original blocking of the burial chamber was intact and consisted of loosely piled blocks of limestone. After its removal, there appeared a small but richly equipped burial chamber. The room was almost entirely filled with a large wooden box coffin, which is decorated with a line of hieroglyphic texts running around each of the vertical sides and one line of text on the lid. These texts belong to a type of offering formulae addressed to the gods Anubis and Osiris, but in addition they also provide the name of the deceased: Henu. On the eastern side of the coffin two eyes are painted that allow the mummy of Henu to gaze out to the rising sun.

A revealing high-resolution look at a 2300-year-old mummy
By Grant Ellis
The Mystery Man of Champollion: An Anonymous Celebrity
Nor is it known how or why this man died. His identity is a mystery; there are no inscriptions on his funerary wrappings that give us a clue. He was not a royal or even a VIP. But he is receiving royal treatment today from MAAT3D, and is destined to become a celebrity. MAAT3D scanned the mummy with a Phillips MX 8000 CT Scanner at the Figeac Hospital at a resolution of 0.3mm per slice, generating more than 7000 scan slices and a world of detail about the mystery man.
But the clincher is the fact that although the mummifiers shaved the body, its internal organs were not removed. Had the Champollion mummy been that of a royal, or even a man of any importance in the community, its brain and entrails would certainly have been ritually removed, replaced with sawdust and resins, and placed beside him or in canopic jars beside his sarcophagus. In short, this mummification was done quickly on the cheap. From this we learn some important facts about mummification during the Ptolemaic period. First, less-privileged people might not receive the full ritual evisceration and decerebration (removal of brains and thoracic organs). This suggests that the standards of funerary services were slipping. Second, the customary ritual removal of organs provided better preservation of the bodies. Although the corpse of the Champollion mummy was obviously immersed in natron (sodium carbonate, a naturally occurring salt) for the standard 60-day dehydration period, the body did not survive as well as the pampered mummies of the elite.

The field of Egyptology covers languages and texts, political, social, economic and medical history, religion, archaeology, art and artifacts, from the Pre-Dynastic origins of Egyptian civilization (ca. 3400 BC) through the latest manifestations of the native culture predominant in Coptic Christianity (7th Century, with survivals to present) - a focal span of roughly 4 millennia.
Students who wish to concentrate specifically in Egyptian art and archaeology (as opposed to language) should note this in applications and review the guidelines for the Near Eastern Art and Archaeology program. Egyptology
The study of Ancient Egypt from the putative beginnings of Egyptian culture (c. 4500 BCE) to the Arab conquest (CE 641). Egyptology began with discovery of the Rosetta Stone (1799) and the publication of Description de l'‰gypte (1809–28) by scholars accompanying Napoleon I. In 1880 Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (3 June 1853 – 28 July 1942), an English Egyptologist, brought controlled, scientifically recorded excavation to Egypt, revolutionizing archeology and pushing theories on Egyptian origins back to 4500 BCE. The discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb in 1922 heightened public awareness. In 1975 the First International Congress of Egyptology convened in Cairo. One-year M.Phil.
Candidates for the M.Phil. in Egyptology formally start their course in October; they take a written examination in June and write a dissertation of not more than 15,000 words to be completed by the end of August. The course should therefore be treated as a full year of study. Its aim is to develop research skills and specialist understanding of a particular area, and to introduce students to some of the ethical and practical matters which are increasingly attendant upon professional involvement with the past. For those who choose the cultural and archaeological papers a previous qualification in Egyptology is not essential, but an informed interest in some aspect of the subject is expected. This will often be the basis for a student's Special Subject (Paper 4), for which there is no prescribed course, and from it the dissertation topic could also be developed. For those who choose the language papers a good knowledge of ancient Egyptian or a cognate language is necessary.

BY CYNTHIA HAVEN L.A. Cicero Joe Manning, associate professor of classics, with several volumes from the Erichsen library, which documents more than 1,500 years of Egyptian history, from approximately 650 B.C. to about 1000 A.D. Stanford has acquired the library of one of the foremost Egyptologists of the 20th century. The collection of Wolja Erichsen (1890-1966), now at Stanford's Green Library, documents more than 1,500 years of Egyptian history, ranging from about 650 B.C. to about A.D. 1000. It includes Egypt's important transition from paganism to Christianity. "The Erichsen library is one of the most significant and perhaps the last great Egyptology library in private hands," said Joe Manning, associate professor of classics. "It is difficult to overestimate the importance of acquiring this collection. Stanford's acquisition adds great momentum to our research and strengthens our profile as one of the very best places in the world to study ancient Mediterranean civilizations." Manning, speaking at an Oct. 15 reception to celebrate the acquisition, emphasized that this contribution from the "heroic age" of Egyptology, which peaked between 1880 and 1920 and was centered in Berlin, is "a huge deal."
