80. (Concentration gradient, diffusion) Demonstration: A pair of cupric ion solutions, one concentrated and dark blue and the other dilute and light blue, are separated by a removable barrier. What will happen when the barrier is removed? the solutions retain their respective colors, the dark solution becomes darker and the light solution becomes lighter, the solutions become indistinguishable in color The entropy of the system will increase , decrease, stay the same
The enthalpy of the system will increase, decrease, stay the same 81. (Concentration cells) Refer to the figure below. What is the spontaneous direction of the system? Cu (in 0.01 M soln.)
Cu (in 1 M soln.) Will a voltage be measured? yes , no If the pictured solutions are mixed and then divided into separate cells, will a voltage be measured? yes, no When unmixed, in which direction do the electrons travel when current is allowed to flow? right, left To which cell will the positively charged ions in the salt bridge flow? right , left Demonstration : With a concentration cell, demonstrate the answers to each of the questions above.

    Electrochemistry Group
The Electrochemistry Group of the RSC represents and co-ordinates the interests of a very wide range of scientists involved with all aspects of electrochemistry. Its members come from further and higher education and public and private research laboratories. Moreover, the Group boasts a significant number of international members. The objectives of the Group are to organise events, promote the involvement of postgraduate students in regional, national and international conferences, inform its members and provide a mechanism for discussion. In order to advise research councils and industries, the Group co-ordinates reports on current and future trends in research and applications of electrochemistry. Meetings
    • The primary mission of the Electrochemistry Group is to provide a central focus for the development of basic, strategic and applied electrochemistry. The group plays a central role in the organisation of the main UK national electrochemistry conference every year, the Electrochem Conference Series, which, since the first Electrochem '94 conference in Edinburgh, has established itself as a central forum for discussion and debate. The Electrochemistry Group has been actively involved in the organisation of a number of Faraday discussions. The Electrochemistry Group also financially supports regional electrochemistry meetings. The idea of such meetings is to allow graduates to give lectures on their PhD work whilst incurring no more costs than travel to and from a local venue. Examples for successful graduate meetings are the Northwest, the Midlands and the M4 (Southwest) meetings.

    Introduction
Electrochemistry can be broadly defined as the study of charge-transfer phenomena. As such, the field of electrochemistry includes a wide range of different chemical and physical phenomena. These areas include (but are not limited to): battery chemistry, photosynthesis, ion-selective electrodes, coulometry, and many biochemical processes. Although wide ranging, electrochemistry has found many practical applications in analytical measurements.
    Electroanalytical chemistry
A good working definition of the field of electroanalytical chemistry would be that it is the field of electrochemistry that utilizes the relationship between chemical phenomena which involve charge transfer (e.g. redox reactions, ion separation, etc.) and the electrical properties that accompany these phenomena for some analytical determination. This relationship is further broken down into fields based on the type of measurement that is made. Potentiometry involves the measurement of potential for quantitative analysis, and
