In an electrochemical reaction, the chemical species are related by kinetic equations, both chemical... and electrochemical (the rate of which may involve variables such as the applied voltage)... The 'movement' of the species due to Diffusion, flow etc. (known as 'Mass Transport') may also be described mathematically by a partial differential equation for each species. These equations cannot be solved analytically except for extremely simple cases, but they can be solved numerically (using a finite difference method - where the cell is covered in a mesh of points so that the derivatives can be approximated as differences between points). By applying boundary conditions at the edges of the grid, the resulting set of simultaneous equations can be solved by an algorithm such as the Strongly Implicit Procedure. The result of solving all the equations with a computer is a concentration profile for each species - describing the spatial concentration distribution of that species within the electrochemical cell. The concentration profile above shows a microband electrode at steady-state in a channel flow-cell. The colour scale represents reactant concentration (pink = bulk concentration, blue = zero concentration)

Electrochemistry, Electrochemical Engineering and Electrochemical Technology is a one week, residential course designed to introduce the practical steps essential to implement electrochemical technology on a commercial scale. It is intended to compliment the course Instrumental Methods in Electrochemistry , run almost annually in Southampton since 1969. Indeed, we hope that those who found Instrumental Methods in Electrochemistry useful will return to Southampton to attend the new course. In the Southampton tradition, Electrochemistry, Electrochemical Engineering and Electrochemical Technology will consist of both lectures (with full written supporting material) and hands-on practical sessions. The early lectures will cover core material such as:

Make a solar cell in your kitchen
A solar cell is a device for converting energy from the sun into electricity. The high-efficiency solar cells you can buy at Radio Shack and other stores are made from highly processed silicon, and require huge factories, high temperatures, vacuum equipment, and lots of money. If we are willing to sacrifice efficiency for the ability to make our own solar cells in the kitchen out of materials from the neighborhood hardware store, we can demonstrate a working solar cell in about an hour. Our solar cell is made from cuprous oxide instead of silicon. Cuprous oxide is one of the first materials known to display the photoelectric effect , in which light causes electricity to flow in a material. Thinking about how to explain the photoelectric effect is what led Albert Einstein to the Nobel prize for physics, and to the theory of relativity.

The solar cell is made from these materials:
  • A sheet of copper flashing from the hardware store. This normally costs about $5.00 per square foot. We will need about half a square foot.

    Overview of current research.
    The principal objective of research in this group is the elucidation of the mechanisms of complex, multi-step electrode reactions of organic and organometallic compounds. The results of this research are relevant not only in the areas of organic and inorganic chemistry, but also find applications in chemical analysis, electroorganic synthesis, pollution control, electrocatalysis, batteries and fuels cells. A full understanding of an electrode reactions must include a complete description of its component steps. Thus, our work includes studies of the factors controlling the rates of simple electron-transfer reactions occurring at electrode surfaces as well as the electron-transfer reactions in solution near the electrode that involve the various species in the overall mechanism (reactants, intermediates, products). Other component reactions are of a more chemical nature. They may be as simple as an isomerization or conformational change of the reactant or an intermediate. However, bonds may also be formed (dimerization, protonation) or broken (loss of an atom or functional group) and these steps combine with the electron-transfer reactions to make up the overall process. An important type of reaction is bond cleavage associated with electron transfer to or from the reactant. Most such reactions are two-step processes in which an intermediate radical anion is formed followed by expulsion of a leaving group. However, others appear to be concerted processes (dissociative electron-transfer reactions) in which both steps occur together and no intermediate radical ion exists. Part of our research is directed toward discovering new examples of the rarer type, dissociative electron transfers.

The electrolytic cell used in today's experiment involves the following reaction: M( s 2 H (aq) M aq H g where M represents an unknown metal. As you can see, it is an oxidation -reduction reaction. By measuring the temperature, pressure and volume of hydrogen, and using the Ideal Gas Law equation, PV = nRT, you will be able to determine the number of moles of hydrogen gas formed. From the balanced equation for the reaction and the mass of the metal that has reacted, you can then calculate the number of moles of metal that has reacted and the atomic weight of the metal. Also, it would be interesting to see how the moles of hydrogen produced compares with the moles predicted based on the following relationships: coulombs amperes x seconds one mole of electrons 96,500 coulombs A coulomb represents the amount of electricity carried in one second by a current of one ampere.

    M In one Department of Energy project, Fuel-Cell Energy of Danbury, Conn., is designing a system to convert polluting coal mine methane into electricity. General Electric MicroGen of Latham, N.Y., plans to introduce a residential fuel cell system by the end of the year to provide remote homes with backup current and heat. Another residential system is being developed by International Fuel Cells of South Windsor, Conn. Future soldiers may thank their lucky stars for the miniature fuel processors being developed by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory of Richland, Wash. The processors will produce hydrogen for fuel cells, which will power portable electronics gear. Fuel cells have always been considered environmentally friendly, and would burnish their ecological credentials by capturing the methane emissions produced by coal mining, and using it to generate electricity. Methane is stored in the microscopic pores in coal. The pores create a large internal surface area that can store up to 10 times as much methane as rock. When miners remove water from a coal bed, they relieve pressure and permit the methane to escape into the mine. If sufficient methane is present in such a confined space, it can explode. To minimize the risk, mining companies open vents into coal seams to release the gas into the air prior to the start of mining operations.
