On these pages, we would like to provide you with some essential information about the electrochemistry at directly heated electrodes, also known as hot-wire electrochemistry This novel technique allows to vary arbitrarily the temperature of an electrode when an electrochemical experiment is running. One can bring about an efficient stirring effect, but on the other hand one can work without any convection and rise the temperature far above the boiling point. The uncommon behaviour of heated microelectrodes allows to design novel chemical sensors with amazing properties. Such sensors are small and cheap. They can be utilized in many analytical applications and they can operate smoothly at remote places. At present, electrochemistry at directly heated microelectrodes is an advanced technology with a well investigated background. Measurements can be performed easily with

There are several advantages of using electrochemical processes:
    • Using electricity to drive a reaction can prevent the need for reactive chemicals, such as oxidizing or reducing agents. This eliminates hazards involved with handling these materials and reduces the costs associated with buying and disposing of hazardous reagents.
Electrochemical methods allow for the precise control of reaction conditions. This can reduce the amount of waste reactants and, in some cases, results in a purer product. Metal purification is one example where electrochemical methods are commonly used.
Electrochemistry provides a direct and very efficient method of converting chemical energy to electrical energy. Therefore, electrochemical processes are fundamental to the development of fuel cell technologies.

Electrochemical technologies can be used in many processes:
    • Chemical production.

    Summary
Delineating and monitoring leakage from aging or ruptured underground storage tanks is both a common and expensive problem. Typically the site must be extensively drilled and numerous water samples taken and analyzed in order to delineate the contaminant plume. Remediation efforts often require that ground water sampling be continued frequently over several years. In contrast, discrete zones of hydrocarbon contamination around leaking storage tanks have been successfully mapped using spontaneous polarization (SP) methods at two separate locations in New Hampshire. Contaminated zones are distinct from their surrounding environment in SP surveys, and exhibit a negative potential whose magnitude is much greater than an order of magnitude above background levels despite severe cultural interference. One hydrocarbon plume associated with a leaking storage tank was located underneath asphalt paving behind a shopping mall in Stratham, NH. Three hydrocarbon plumes associated with such tanks located on Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth, NH were successfully mapped using SP. In addition, remediation efforts at the former fire department training site at
