Entomology , from the Greek entomo- /εντομο- "that which is cut in pieces or engraved/segmented", hence "insect"; and logos /λόγος, "knowledge", is the scientific study of insects . At some 1.3 million described species, insects account for more than 2/3rds of all known organisms, dating back some 400 million years, and have many kinds of interactions with humans and other forms of life on earth, so it is an important specialty within biology . Though technically incorrect, the definition is sometimes widened to include the study of terrestrial animals in other arthropod groups or other phyla , such as arachnids myriapods earthworms , and slugs Like several of the other fields that are categorized within zoology , entomology is a taxon -based category; any form of scientific study in which the organisms studied happen to be insects is, by definition, entomology. About Iowa State University Entomology
Entomologists at Iowa State university have engaged in teaching, research, and extension for more than a century. Professor Herbert Osborn taught the nation's first entomology course here in 1880, beginning a tradition of excellence in basic and applied entomology. The Department of Entomology faculty work to provide an excellent education, develop innovative research programs and supply a creative, highly visible problem-solving extension program. The department is part of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State. Latest News Latest Publication Entomology Videos New publication: Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases in Iowa . Entomology for Beginners
Entomology is the study of insects. This page provides some basic information on insects. First a quick look at the anatomy of adult insects. Then a short story about the metamorphosis of insects. Insect anatomy To learn more about the anatomy, click on the different body parts of this insect !! Metamorphosis of insects In their development from egg to adult, insects change in form. The different instars are not alike, which is called metamorphosis. There are two general types of metamorphosis: simple metamorphosis and complete metamorphosis. Simple metamorphosis In simple metamorphosis the wings develop externally during the larval stages. The larval stages, which are called nymphs, look very similar to the adult insect. There is no pupal stage. The figure shows the development from an egg via 5 larval instars to an adult bug. Complete metamorphosis In a complete metamorphosis the wings develop internally during the larval stages. The larval stages look quite different from the adult. Between the last larval stage and the adult stage there is a pupal stage which usually is inactive.

Natural/Agro Ecosystems Research, with emphasis on IPM/Biological Control of pest problems, and environmental monitoring and protection. It includes (a) IPM/biological control of commodity pests such as horticultural, field and forage crops, forest and Christmas tree, household and structural pests, and (b) monitoring and protection of the environment. Welcome to Cornell Entomology
There are two departments of Entomology at Cornell University. Though spatially separated and administratively distinct, they operate with a joint mission and strategic plan. The Ithaca Department is housed on the Cornell campus and was founded by John Henry Comstock in 1874.
The Geneva Department is housed at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, which opened in 1882.
Collectively, the two departments are firmly rooted in the land grant mission and strive to be recognized for research that encompasses genomes to communities of populations, and for delivering exceptional educational programs to a diverse clientele.
    Our Mission
    • To conduct research on insects and related arthropods that expands understanding at many levels of biological organization and/or addresses needs of clients in New York, the nation and the world. To educate and train future leaders in entomology and the biological sciences. To integrate and extend entomological knowledge to clients and thereby improve their welfare. To significantly contribute to the broad teaching mission of the College and the University.

For more information, please see a description of the survey's methods here
    BeeSpotter Web Site Launched
The University of Illinois has launched the BeeSpotter web portal , designed to aid the public in identifying and reporting populations of honey bees and bumble bees. The site, a work in progress, allows users to submit bee pictures and the locations where they were taken. The pictures are identified by staff in the Department of Entomology, and the location data is incorporated into a map to create a statewide record of bee populations. The site will also feature guides to bees, and information on several other bee-related topics such as natural history, sting treatment, and bee gardens.

Our department has a long history of excellence in research, extension, and graduate education and we continue to focus on these areas for the issues that confront us today and for the future. The Department of Entomology works through two colleges-the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the College of Natural Science . This two-college arrangement enables students to integrate the agriculture/natural resources and biological/physical sciences in an optimally beneficial way. We offer B.S. M.S. and Ph.D. degrees and consider graduate student education and postdoctoral experience to be one of our highest priorities. Click here to see photo's from
