The Department of Entomology at Rutgers University was established in 1888 as part of the New Jersey Agricultural Station. Over the years, department faculty has studied a wide variety of economically important insects including mosquitoes, gypsy moth, Colorado potato beetle and cockroaches. Today, our faculty conducts research involving the systematics of caddisflies and dragonflies, insect plant interactions, biology and spread of invasive insects, public health issues, and pests of blueberries, cranberries, ornamentals, tree fruit, turf, and vegetables. Our goal is to support and encourage students who are preparing for careers as scientists in federal, state, or industrial laboratories or in academic institutions, by providing them with as broad a background as possible in the many facets of insect biology. Programs within our Department encompass all levels of biological organization from the molecular level to ecosystems. In addition to training in modern methodologies of classical entomology, the Department has special emphasis areas in Insect/Plant Interactions, Biological Control, and Molecular Entomology. We take great pride in the progress and development of our students and the high quality of their research and publications. If you are a prospective student, we encourage you to visit our Department and to meet with the faculty and graduate students, so that you can judge the Department and its excellent facilities for yourself.

Molecular Biosciences Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Kansas University has a tradition of pioneering excellence in entomology that has been recognized nationally and internationally for the past 120 years. In fact, "Entomology at the University of Kansas is as old as the University itself." As the result of recent departmental merger Entomology is now a full partner in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The newly defined Program in Entomology at KU is unique, not only because of the former department's long history, but also because it is one of a few such departments not administered within a school of agriculture. We are primarily focused on the basic biology of insects: systematics, evolutionary processes, genetics, biogeography, ecology, population biology, behavior, morphology, and physiology.

Insects and related terrestrial arthropods comprise over 80% of the life forms on earth. The Class Insecta alone is suspected of containing between one and five million species at a minimum. Biological studies on most of these are sorely lacking, and very probably fewer than half the extant species have been named and described. Insects, by virtue of their small size and rapid reproductive capability, are major competitors with humans for resources. These same characteristics, together with ease of handling and breeding, make them ideal organisms for the elucidation of basic biological principles. Insects are also extensively involved in the spread of many pathogenic microorganisms that impact plants and animals, including humans. The Department of Entomology at The Ohio State University is the only academic and research center for entomology in the state of Ohio, and exists as a necessary response to the central place occupied by insects in our society. The Department of Zoology and Entomology dates from 1891. The first Ph.D. in Entomology was awarded in 1904; as of Spring Commencement 2002, 418 Ph.D. and 561 M.S. degrees had been granted in Entomology. Close cooperation between entomologists at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster and those on the Columbus campus began in 1947, and the two units thereafter evolved into a single administrative unit. The former Department of Zoology and Entomology became two separate departments within the College of Biological Sciences in 1967. Formal merger of OARDC and The Ohio State University occurred in 1982, though the Department of Entomology has functioned as a unit since its inception.

The R. M. Bohart Museum of Entomology founded in 1946, is located on the University of California, Davis campus. The museum is dedicated to teaching, research and service. We have the seventh largest insect collection in North America, which is worldwide in coverage. The collection holdings total more than seven million specimens, and focus on terrestrial and fresh water invertebrates. The museum is also home of the California Insect Survey, a storehouse of the insect biodiversity of California’s deserts, mountains, coast and great central valley. We now have a new Pacific Invasive Ants Poster. Check it out in the Gift Shop!

39. Careers In Entomology
Perhaps you ve thought about making entomology your career. What do entomologists do? An entomologist is a scientist who studies insects.
http://members.aol.com/yesedu/careers.html
Careers in Entomology by Gary A. Dunn, M.S., F.R.E.S., Director of Education (Professional and hobby entomologist) INTRODUCTION Perhaps you've thought about making entomology your career. What do entomologists do? An entomologist is a scientist who studies insects. Entomologists have many important jobs. Some entomologists' study the classification, life cycle, distribution, physiology, behavior, ecology, or population dynamics of insects. Other entomologists study urban pests, forest pests, agricultural pests, or medical and veterinary pests and their control; some work with beneficial insects like honey bees, silkworms, ladybird beetles, and parasitic wasps. Entomologists are researchers, teachers, or consultants, and may work for private companies, universities, or government agencies. PROFESSIONAL ENTOMOLOGY About 8,000 men and women are professional entomologists in the United States. They work in jobs that include teaching about insects, working as extension entomologists, raising bees, enforcing quarantines and regulations, doing insect survey work, consulting on integrated pest management topics, selling insecticides, controlling pests, and conducting research on insect classification, taxonomy, biology, ecology, behavior, or control. The greatest number are employed in some aspect of economic or applied entomology dealing with the control of harmful insects. There are also tens of thousands of amateur entomologists and hobbyists who study insects without pay, and who provide valuable information on insect distributions, seasonal activity patterns, identification, life cycles, behavior, and more.

J. L. Gressitt Center for Research in Entomology
The Gressit Center houses some 14 million prepared specimens of insects and related arthropods, including over 16,500 primary types, making it the third largest entomology collection in the United States and the eighth largest in the world. While global in scope, the collection's strength lies in its unparalleled holdings of specimens from New Guinea, southeast Asia, the Philippines and Oceania. Unmatched historical and modern holdings from the Hawaiian Islands document the archipelago's highly endemic and often endangered native insect fauna as well as the large contingent of alien species that threaten it. Entomology at the Bishop Museum can be traced back as far as 1892, begining with our support of R.C.L. Perkins and the Fauna Hawaiiensis survey project.
