Welcome to Environmental Inquiry!
Environmental Inquiry (EI) is a collection of ideas and resources to support student projects on a wide range of topics in the environmental sciences. How can I get started?
If you're looking for online resources related to one of our books, click on the appropriate book cover below. Otherwise, a good way to start is by browsing through this list of topics for student projects How does EI work?
EI includes two levels of inquiry, modeled after professional scientific research. First, students learn specific research protocols . Using these protocols, they conduct interactive research projects. Downloadable forms help students design feasible experiments and then analyze, interpret, and present the results. Discussion boards and an online peer review forum provide opportunities for interaction with fellow students. Who can participate?
This EI website is designed for use by any interested high school students and teachers. Our college-level EI website at Penn State University is for undergraduate students and faculty.

Wind farms need techs to keep running LINCOLN, Kan. (AP) - The line of towering wind turbines stand motionless on the ridgeline above Interstate 70 in central Kansas, Y-shaped silhouettes amid the swirling snow. Despite the weather, dozens of technicians are working to get the 10-mile-long Smoky Hills Wind Farm ready to begin producing electricity. Jason Martinson, who is supervising the 56-turbine operation on behalf of Enel North America Inc., said after almost a decade in the industry he's still amazed by how fast wind farms like Smoky Hills are going up across the country. But he also said workers like those braving the blizzard-like conditions outside his office are becoming increasingly rare.

As the Olympic games draw closer, the Chinese government is attempting to improve the country’s air and water quality to satisfy commitments made to the Olympic committee. Beijing is required to meet international standards on four major pollutants — sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, airborne particulates, and chemical oxygen demand, a measure of water pollution. The city is known for its notorious smog which is raising concern among athletes who worry their health may be negatively affected. To improve the air quality, cities in the region are reducing emissions from some of their most heavily polluting steel and concrete plants, while neighboring provinces are restricting their coal-fired emissions. Thus far, the city has successfully met the standards for all but the airborne particulates. BIODIVERSITY

Environmental Ethics
First published Mon Jun 3, 2002; substantive revision Thu Jan 3, 2008 Environmental ethics is the discipline that studies the moral relationship of human beings to, and also the value and moral status of, the environment and its nonhuman contents. This entry covers: (1) the challenge of environmental ethics to the anthropocentrism (i.e., human-centeredness) embedded in traditional western ethical thinking; (2) the early development of the discipline in the 1960s and 1970s; (3) the connection of deep ecology, feminist environmental ethics, and social ecology to politics; (4) the attempt to apply traditional ethical theories, including consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics, to support contemporary environmental concerns; and (5) the focus of environmental literature on wilderness, and possible future developments of the discipline.
1. Introduction: The Challenge of Environmental Ethics
In the literature on environmental ethics the distinction between instrumental value and intrinsic value means to further some other ends, whereas the latter is the value of things as

Environmental Quality Incentives Program
Updated The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) was reauthorized in the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (Farm Bill) to provide a voluntary conservation program for farmers and ranchers that promotes agricultural production and environmental quality as compatible national goals. EQIP offers financial and technical help to assist eligible participants install or implement structural and management practices on eligible agricultural land. EQIP offers contracts with a minimum term that ends one year after the implementation of the last scheduled practices and a maximum term of ten years. These contracts provide incentive payments and cost-shares to implement conservation practices. Persons who are engaged in livestock or agricultural production on eligible land may participate in the EQIP program. EQIP activities are carried out according to an environmental quality incentives program plan of operations developed in conjunction with the producer that identifies the appropriate conservation practice or practices to address the resource concerns. The practices are subject to NRCS technical standards adapted for local conditions. EQIP may cost-share up to 75 percent of the costs of certain conservation practices. Incentive payments may be provided for up to three years to encourage producers to carry out management practices they may not otherwise use without the incentive. However, limited resource producers and beginning farmers and ranchers may be eligible for cost-shares up to 90 percent. Farmers and ranchers may elect to use a certified third-party provider for technical assistance. An individual or entity may not receive, directly or indirectly, cost-share or incentive payments that, in the aggregate, exceed $450,000 for all EQIP contracts entered during the term of the Farm Bill.
