From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Ergonomics (or human factors ) is the application of scientific information concerning objects, systems and environment for human use (definition adopted by the International Ergonomics Association in ). Ergonomics is commonly thought of as how companies design tasks and work areas to maximize the efficiency and quality of their employees’ work. However, ergonomics comes into everything which involves people. Work systems, sports and leisure, health and safety should all embody ergonomics principles if well designed. The goal of ergonomics and human factors is to make the interaction of humans with machines as smooth as possible, enhancing performance, reducing error, and increasing user satisfaction through comfort and aesthetics. It is the applied science of equipment design intended to maximize productivity by reducing operator fatigue and discomfort. The field is also called biotechnology, human engineering, and human factors engineering. Ergonomic research is primarily performed by ergonomists who study human capabilities in relationship to their work demands. Information derived from ergonomists contributes to the design and evaluation of tasks, jobs, products, environments and systems in order to make them compatible with the needs, abilities and limitations of people (IEA, 2000).

2. Ergonomics.org - Posture, Movement And Ergonomics
Posture, movement and the crucial ingredient often neglected in the science of ergonomics today.
http://www.ergonomics.org/
ERGONOMICS...
POSTURE...
In recent years, ergonomists have attempted to define postures which minimize unnecessary static work and reduce the forces acting on the body. All of us could significantly reduce our risk of injury if we could adhere to the following ergonomic principles:
  • All work activities should permit the worker to adopt several different, but equally healthy and safe postures Where muscular force has to be exerted it should be done by the largest appropriate muscle groups available. Work activities should be performed with the joints at about mid-point of their range of movement. This applies particularly to the head, trunk, and upper limbs.
THE PROBLEM...
Here, however, we arrive at a serious problem - and a challenge to conventional ergonomic thinking: In order to put these recommendations into practice, a person would have to be a skilled observer of his or her own joint and muscle functioning and would have to be able to change his or her posture to a healthier one at will. No one develops this sort of highly refined sensory awareness without special training. Therefore, in order to derive the benefits of ergonomic research, we must learn how to observe our bodies in a new way.* Any attempt to improve workplace conditions can have only limited success if this issue is ignored.

OSHA has a four-pronged comprehensive approach to ergonomics designed to quickly and effectively address musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the workplace. The four segments of OSHA's strategy for reducing injuries and illnesses from MSDs in the workplace are:
Enforcement , OSHA will conduct inspections for ergonomic hazards and issue citations under the General Duty Clause and issue ergonomic hazard alert letters where appropriate.
Outreach and Assistance , OSHA will provide assistance to businesses, particularly small businesses, and help them proactively address ergonomic issues in the workplace.
National Advisory Committee , OSHA will charter an advisory committee that will be authorized to, among other things, identify gaps in research to the application of ergonomics and ergonomic principles in the workplace.
What guidelines does OSHA provide?

Today, changes in technology, changes in the way we perform work, and where and how we work are occurring at a rapid pace. Nowhere is the change more evident than in the use of computers. This new technology has brought on new demands for information as well as new and more sophisticated computing systems. Today, almost every one of us interacts with computers on a daily basis to create new things and ideas, to produce documents, to correspond with friends and associates, and to retrieve information. Along with the expanding use of this technology have come reports about adverse health changes for computer users. Here we will examine the factors that may impact your health and performance while using a computer. Whether you use a desktop computer in an office or a portable computer in an alternative setting, you make choices that can either improve or decrease your performance and comfort. By thoughtfully reviewing the layout of your workplace and your equipment, we are often able to identify what is wrong and begin to develop improvements to make computer use more rewarding and less physically demanding. When you look at a work environment, especially your own work place, ask yourself the question, "Would you do it this way?" After reviewing your work area, can you honestly say that this is the:

Office Ergonomics Training This site contains office ergonomics information aimed at ergonomics committee members as well as office workers in general. The information here is based on the research literature whenever possible; it may not be consistent with some of the conventional wisdom that has persisted for decades, such as "sit up straight" or "have the monitor at eye level" or "the keyboard should be at elbow height." Office ergonomics deserves to be treated separately from general (industrial) ergonomics. The principles are the same, but there are so many subtle differences and different products that it's best to specialize. This site collects and publishes some "handouts" that have been used widely in training courses for office workers and ergonomists and health care professionals who work with office workers. The handouts have received good reviews with respect to their clarity, objectivity, and scientific basis. Some have been published in slightly different form in book chapters and manuals. We are pleased to share them with you. This site was developed by Chris Grant, PhD, now retired from ergonomics. Her Michigan-based ergonomics practice, F-One Ergonomics, was limited to office-related issues. Dr. Grant and other cited authors on the site are Certified Professional Ergonomists and Certified Industrial Ergonomists who have consulted in this field for years and have been involved in the development of national and international ergonomics standards. Dr. Grant has generously transferred the site to Dennis Ankrum, who will strive to maintain the standard of excellence she has set.

by Juliet Kemp in Technical var addthis_pub = 'oreillynetwork'; Having just moved my mouse to the left of the keyboard in order to put my notebook on the right*, I am now hyper-aware of how much I use the mouse and that this is less comfortable than using the keyboard. So, a few questions, if anyone can help:
  • I love my MacBook keyboard/trackpad - use the mouse without having to move your hand! Adesso make a contoured keyboard with trackpad
  • Other ergonomic-type thoughts welcome. I do have correct desk/monitor/keyboard height etc setup already, based on recommendations from my osteopath; I use Workrave * It was pointed out to me that constantly reaching across the keyboard to make notes was a bit daft. I have been sat at this desk for nearly 3 years and this has never previously occurred to me.

February 1, 2008 05:37 AM One of the greatest dumpster-diving find I ever had was an IBM Model M keyboard *WITH* embedded pencil eraser mouse. While keyboard shortcuts are great, todays Web2.71828 applications are rarely keyboard-aware. Nothing is more efficient for quick mousing than a pecil eraser mouse right between the G, H, and B keys. You don't have to move your hands, and your left hand is set up and ready to click, so dragging is much easier than using a trackpad. I strongly reccomend trying one out. Surely you have a friend with a Thinkpad laptop lying around...
