Computer Workstation Ergonomics
I spend almost every waking moment in front of a computer. I'm what you might call an indoor enthusiast I've been lucky because I haven't experienced any kind of computer-related injury due to my prolonged use of computers , but it is a very real professional risk. I get some occasional soreness in my hands or wrists, mostly after marathon binges where I've clearly overdone it but that's about the extent of it. All too many of my friends have struggled with long-term back pain or hand pain . While you can (and should) exercise your body and hands to strengthen them, there's one part of this equation I've been ignoring. I've been on a quest for the ultimate computer desk for a few years now, and I've talked at length about the value of investing in a great chair . But I hadn't considered whether my current desk and chair is configured properly to fit my body. What about the ergonomics of your computer workstation?

Ergonomics is a multi-disciplinary science which emphasizes the importance of designing workstations (i.e. office furniture or industrial work areas and equipment) to fit the individual worker. The objective is to "design out" as many ergonomic hazards as possible in an effort to reduce cumulative trauma disorders. The following fact sheets are available on this page: A properly arranged workstation can prevent injuries.

American Ergonomics Corporation, the leader in dynamic seat technology, is licensing Counter Balanced Motion (CBM) seating solutions for vehicular and office seating. This site contains the latest information on our innovative, industry specific applications of our patented seating technology.
CBM Design Concept
AEC dynamic seat concept is a seat motion mechanism that self adjusts to respond to the body's movements.
CBM Automotive Seating
The CBM Seat offers comfort and safety in a variety of vehicles, including passengers cars, truck, and aircraft. Using the CBM seating solution as a restraint reduces loads on the lower body, as well as reducing head trajectory. The CBM Seat deploys by momentum to absorb deceleration forces on the lower body.
CBM Aircraft Seating
The Counter Balanced Motion (CBM) Seat is a dynamic mechanism that provides passive, automatic adjustment of the seat, backrest and headrest. The CBM is designed to provide comfort by supporting the motion of the seated passenger. This system is user activated without motors.
CBM Office Seating
The dynamic seat design concept is focused on the consideration of the many body posture changes performed during any seated task. The central goal is to provide seating support, motion, and body alignment. There are several chair designs that feature the arcuate seating motion patented by American Ergonomics Corporation. These include the Ergomax chair, and other variations.

Applying Ergonomic Principles in the Workplace: How the Alexander Technique can Help by Holly A. Sweeney
1. All work activities should permit the worker to adopt several different, but equally healthy and.safe postures
2. Where muscular force has to be exerted it should be done by the largest appropriate muscle groups available.
3. Work activities should be performed with the joints at about mid-point of their range of movement. This applies particularly to the head, trunk, and upper limbs. (Cortlett, 1983)
Here, however, we arrive at a problem: In order to put these recommendations into practice, a person would have to be a skilled observer of his or her own joint and muscle functioning and would have to be able to change his or her posture to a healthier one at will. No one develops this sort of highly refined sensory awareness without special training. Therefore, in order to derive the benefits of ergonomic research, we must learn how to observe our bodies in a new way.
One training program that cultivates these skills is the Alexander Technique, which enables its students to put ergonomic principles into practice, and thus helps them reduce their risk of developing an RSI.

Introduction
Welcome to MISC.HEALTH.INJURIES.RSI.MODERATED Version 2 FACT: More workers are injured using a computer keyboard in the US than any other tool for the workplace! My name is Dr. Jonathan Bailin. You can read more about me later. This article is part of the introduction to my moderated global usenet newsgroup which provides expert opinions about a group of injuries called Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI). One severe form of RSI is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). As the previous fact points out, most RSI's are due to keyboard use. Please do not reproduce this FAQ without consulting me at RSI@USC.EDU. You may not change the content of the FAQ in any way but you may reformat it to better integrate it with your production media. *Any* FAQ information should not be used without confirming its validity and/or appropriateness. It may not be entirely correct or up to date. RSI sufferers should discuss all health matters with your attending health care practitioner. For those of you new to the topic of RSI, don't minimize its threat. It is a serious, and frequently career threatening, affliction. Early attention to it is usually critical. To conquer it, prepare to make behavioral and lifestyle changes as no best piece of equipment, technology, or magic bullet exists.

hLAbout Us
The Office Ergonomics Research Committee (OERC) was formed in 1991 by a group of US companies concerned by reports of an increasing number of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among office workers. The goal of the OERC is to better understand the human and machine system that is comprised of the people who use office, information and communication technologies in a broad variety of settings. A fuller understanding of this interaction facilitates better product designs and more comfortable and productive human users. The current objectives of the OERC are:
  • to understand the association between office work and discomfort, fatigue and MSDs, and
  • to communicate its findings on their possible causes, methods of intervention and management by providing access to information for members, employers, manufacturers, workers and other interested parties on the association between office work and musculoskeletal disorders.
About the Members By design, OERC members represent a diverse group of organizations with a common interest in complex human-machine systems, commonly referred to as office ergonomics. The members combine their knowledge and resources to both encourage and support the study of the many factors involved in this system.

(a) Scope and application. This section shall apply to a job, process, operation where a repetitive motion injury (RMI) has occurred to more than one employee under the following conditions:
(1) Work related causation. The repetitive motion injuries (RMIs) were predominantly caused (i.e. 50% or more) by a repetitive job, process, or operation;
(2) Relationship between RMIs at the workplace. The employees incurring the RMIs were performing a job process, or operation of identical work activity. Identical work activity means that the employees were performing the same repetitive motion task, such as but not limited to word processing, assembly or, loading;
(3) Medical requirements. The RMIs were musculoskeletal injuries that a licensed physician objectively identified and diagnosed; and
(4)Time requirements. The RMIs were reported by the employees to the employer in the last 12 months but not before July 3, 1997.

Ergonomics, also known as human factors, is the scientific discipline that seeks to understand and improve human interactions with products, equipment, environments and systems. Drawing upon human biology, psychology, engineering and design, ergonomics aims to develop and apply knowledge and techniques to optimise system performance, whilst protecting the health, safety and well-being of individuals involved. The attention of ergonomics extends across work, leisure and other aspects of our daily lives. The journal Ergonomics is an international multi-disciplinary refereed publication, with a 50 year tradition of disseminating high quality research. Original submissions, both theoretical and applied, are invited from across the subject, including physical, cognitive, organisational and environmental ergonomics. Papers reporting the findings of research from cognate disciplines are also welcome, where these contribute to understanding equipment, tasks, jobs, systems and environments and the corresponding needs, abilities and limitations of people.
