Ethology is a combination of laboratory and field science, with strong ties to certain other disciplines — e.g., neuroanatomy ecology evolution . Ethologists are typically interested in a behavioral process rather than in a particular animal group and often study one type of behavior (e.g., aggression) in a number of unrelated animals.

Introduction to Ethology (The Zoological Study of Animal Behavior) NOTE: If you don't see figures in an upper window, click here! Back to the Ethology Home Page! Ethology is the zoological study of animal behavior. Ethologists have a special interest in genetically-programmed behaviors known as instincts . The predictable behavioral programs are inherited by animals through their parents and portions of the programs are open to natural selection and modification. Thus, these behaviors are phylogenetic adaptations that have an evolutionary history. This often leads to a comparative approach and has led researchers to search for the biological basis of human behavior by comparing our activities to those of our close relative (other primates; especially chimps). There are two schools of thought as to how animals acquire their behavior patterns. Some hold to the view that animals, including humans, learn all their behavior during the course of ontogenetic development. Ducks, for example, learn how to quack like a duck and don't honk like a goose because they hear their parents while within the egg). Experiments have since shown that these behaviors are built-in and not learned. Very complex behavior patterns can be passed on through the genes. A spider's orb web, for example , is built perfectly the first time a spider attempts construction, despite the fact that they may have no prior experience with webs (Fig 1). Female spiders construct egg sacs in the Fall, and then die. The spiderlings emerge in the spring, and never had experience with an orb web before building their own.

Ontologies for Ethology
Peter E. Midford
Introduction
Welcome to the ontologies for ethology page, documenting a project to develop knowledge representation, including ontologies, as tools for describing and analyzing animal behavior. The project is currently developing a set of ontologies for courtship behavior in a clade of Habronattus jumping spiders from raw video of behavior sequences. Ultimately, a small library of such knowledge bases will serve as sample data to develop methods for comparative studies and (secondarily) other varieties of linking between knowledge bases across behavior studies. The plan is to eventually provide these comparative tools into the Mesquite tool. The purpose of this project is not to propose a particular upper-level or coding for ontologies, but to demonstrate ontology construction as a general technique for coding ethograms and other descriptions of behavior into machine understandable forms. As such, it is intended to encompass, rather than serve as an alternative to, previous attempts at formalizing the description of behavior.

Darwin spent a lot of time seeking out photographs of facial expressions to include in this book, and Paul Ekman (the modern expert on facial expression of emotion) makes a wonderful editor. amazon.

Artificial Life and Synthetic Ethology
Introduction
Artificial life Artificial Life ONLINE from Santa Fe). Synthetic ethology is an approach to the study of animal behavior in which simple, synthetic organisms are allowed to behave and evolve in a synthetic world. Because both the organisms and their worlds are synthetic, they can be constructed for specific purposes, particularly for testing specific hypotheses.

Ethology is the study of animal behavior. Scientists, called ethologists, spend their lives studying and trying to understand how dogs communicate with each other. When ethologists seek to understand a behavior, they will ask questions about the behavior to determine its cause. The questions might include:
    • What is the immediate cause of the behavior? How did the behavior develop? How has this behavior evolved over time? What is the function of the behavior?
Seeking the answers to such questions allows ethologists to gather scientific knowledge about the behavior. Scientific knowledge is information that is gathered using very specific rules. The information gathered is that which can be observed objectively, such as the behavior itself and the environment in which it occurred. Observations are made, then verified by repeating the conditions and observing again. Observations that can be predictably repeated are called facts. Observation of canine communication signals and the interpretation of them are two different skills. If you aren't careful, you can make mistakes in either your observations or interpretations of behavior.
