Orlando. Photo by Aaron Clayton. The other group of scientists studies acquired behavior: how animals and people learn. The field is called behavior analysis, or simply behaviorism. Its best-known founder was B.F. Skinner. There are departments of behavior analysis in universities all over the US and also at universities in South America and Asia. You'll usually find them in the psychology building. I have been interested in the natural behavior of animals all my life. I was one of those children who watches animals, keeps aquariums, collects butterflies and moths, and knows the name and habits of every bird, tree, and wildflower in her neighborhood: a naturalist. In college I discovered Konrad Lorenz's books and found a name for my natural bent: ethology. Watching animals to see what they do. Then, a few years later, I took a job as head dolphin trainer at Sea Life Park, the Hawaiian oceanarium complex pioneered by my husband Tap Pryor. That's when I discovered

Jump to: navigation search Ethology is the sub-field of zoology concerned with the study of the behaviour of animals . The field emerged in the late 19th century and was pioneered by French zoologist Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire and American entomologist William Morton Wheeler . In the mid 20th century, following the modern synthesis of Evolution and Genetics Konrad Lorenz and Niko Tinbergen developed the modern field of ethology, based on evolutionary theory. In the 1970s ethology produced the field of sociobiology , or social ethology, the study of animal behaviour in groups. The field also has strong connections with the field of comparative psychology , and thus evolutionary psychology Another branch of ethology pioneered by the late zoologist Donald Griffin is cognitive ethology. This investigates animal Consciousness, self-awareness and general cognition and argues (much as Darwin did) that animal’s minds differ from human not in kind but in degree.

Etologa del Cortejo en Parotia carolae DESCRIBING THE BEHAVIORAL component of the phenotype is a major objective of ethology and the foundation on which the comparative study of animal behavior is built (Lorenz 1941, Tinbergen 1959, van lets 1965). Descriptions that depict behavior patterns at various levels of integration and hierarchical organization are important for understanding the "anatomy" of complex behavioral traits (Tinbergen 1951). Such detailed descriptive work is important for research on the evolutionary origins and patterns of transformation for complex traits like avian courtship displays, because it systematically dissects the phenotype into discrete units suitable for analysis (Schenkel 1956, Eibl-Eibesfeldt 1970).

Graduate study in animal behavior, leading to a Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degree, is offered in the Department of Zoology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). Between 1966 and 2006, there were one to three professors specialized in animal behavior within the SIUC Ethology Lab . These individuals have supervised their independent research program in behavioral biology, taught ethological specialty courses, plus directed research of graduate and undergraduate students. Thus, from this lab, more than 70 Master's theses, PhD dissertations, and Undergraduate Honors theses have been completed since 1966. Upper-level animal behavior courses at SIUC have included: Animal Behavior, Research Methods in Animal Behavior, Seminar in Animal Behavior, Concepts in Animal Behavior, Seminar in Applied Ethology, Behavioral Manipulation of Animals, Ethology of Symbiosis, and Bioacoustics. Other animal behavior courses are available from time to time elsewhere on campus, such as, in the Department of Anthropology. Professors and principal investigators in the SIUC Ethology Lab have included: Dr. George H. Waring
