All About Evolution and Intelligent Design
One of the most widely debated and controversial topics of our time, Evolution is a biological term referring to the period of time in which Earth has evolved from initial creation into the lush populated planet we know today. The theory of evolution states that overtime, as new species began to evolve, the more dominant species were in greatest control of the Earth’s population. The more dominant a species, the more likely it would be able to reproduce and continue up the evolutionary ladder. Furthermore, characteristics from those dominant species would be the ones that would carry on to future generations. Otherwise known as natural selection or speciation, this gradual evolution accounts for the immensely diverse biological world we all live in today. In theory, evolution is believed to have taken billions and billions of years, which has frequently conflicted with the religious beliefs of many. The idea of evolution was first recorded on paper by Charles Darwin in his 1859 book The Origin of Species. Darwin’s book offered the world of science its first rational and well-argued theory for a manner by which evolutionary global change had occurred and would continue to occur over time.

Highlights of the major pieces of evidence, including living organisms, common ancestry, homologous structures, vestigial organs, biochemistry.
http://bioweb.cs.earlham.edu/9-12/evolution/HTML/live.html
Evidence from Living Organisms
By examining fossils and by determining their relative and absolute ages, scientists have collected evidence that supports the theory that species changed over time. Further evidence is derived from living organisms. In order to determine if species change scientists compare common ancestry, structure, biochemistry, and development of organisms alive today. As you read this section, study this evidence and critically evaluate whether it indicates that species may have arisen by descent and modification from ancestral species.
Evidence of Common Ancestry
If species change over time, then scientists should be able to cite examples showing that a group of living species may have come from a common ancestor. Let us examine one of many cases for which this seems to be true. Gracing the islands of Hawaii is a family of birds commonly called the Hawaiian honeycreepers. All Hawaiian honeycreepers have similarities in skeletal and muscle structure that indicate they are closely related. However, each of the Hawaiian honeycreeper species has a bill specialized for eating certain foods. Scientists suggest that all 23 honeycreeper species apparently arose from a single species that migrated to Hawaii.
Homologous Structures
If a bat, a human, an alligator, and a penguin all evolved from a common ancestor, then they should share common anatomical traits. In fact, they do. Compare the forelimbs of the human, the bat, the penguin, and the alligator. Find the humerus, radius, ulna, and carpals in each forelimb. Though the limbs look strikingly different on the outside and though they vary in function, they are very similar in skeletal structure. More significantly, they are derived from the same structures in the embryo. Structures that are embryologically similar, but have different functions, are called homologous structures. Though these animals look different, a comparison of homologous structures indicates that they are quite similar. This suggests that these animals evolved from a common ancestor.

Evolution in Hawaii: A Supplement to Teaching About Evolution and the Nature of Science

Evolution in Hawaii
examines evolution and the nature of science by looking at a specific part of the world the Hawaiian Islands. By focusing on one set of islands, this book illuminates the general principles of evolutionary biology and how ongoing research will continue to expand our knowledge of the natural world. This practical book has been specifically designed to give teachers and their students an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of evolution using exercises with real genetic data to explore and investigate speciation and the probable order in which speciation occurred based on the ages of each island. Ancient Greek Views If the mechanical view is to be found in these philosophers, the teleological occurs in Heraclitus, who conceives the process as a rational development, in accordance with the Logos and names steps of the process, as from igneous air to water, and thence to earth. The Stoics followed Heraclitus in the main lines of their physics. The primal principle is, as with him, igneous air. only that this is named God by them with much greater definiteness. The Godhead has life in itself, and develops into the universe, differentiating primarily into two kinds of elements the finer or active, and the coarser or passive. Formation or development goes on continuously, under the impulse of the formative principle, by whatever name it is known, until all is once more dissolved by the ekpyrosis into the fundamental principle, and the whole process begins over again. Their conception of the process as analogous to the development of the seed finds special expression in their term of logos spermatikos . In one point the Stoics differ essentially from Heraclitus. With them the whole process is accomplished according to certain ends indwelling in the Godhead, which is a provident, careful intelligence, while no providence is assumed in Heraclitus.

How do we know about ancient creatures?
Scientists who study the extinct creatures that once roamed the Earth are called paleontologists. If you were to watch a paleontologist at work, you would probably see him on his hands and knees, methodically and painstakingly examining the surface of the ground. This is because he is looking for fossils , or else he has lost a contact lens.
A fossil is any trace left behind by a living thing. Usually the term refers to mineralized bones, but it can also include teeth, eggs, footprints and unpaid phone bills. By careful analysis, paleontologists can often reconstruct an entire animal from just a tiny fragment of bone. (right) By collecting and analyzing fossils, paleontologists have succeeded in tracing the entire history of life on Earth, from the first living things to modern man. Of course, there are gaps in the record and minor uncertainties of interpretation. Nevertheless, the overall picture is clearly understood. (left)
