The Exobiology Branch conducts research in Exobiology seeking to increase our knowledge of the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe. Answers are sought to questions such as: To what extent did chemical evolution occur in the primitive bodies of the solar system? How did life originate on the Earth, and what role did minerals play? What evidence exists regarding the early interplay between biological and environmental evolution? What do molecular fossils tell us about early microbial evolution? How can the study of contemporary microbes or geochemical samples inform us of past events? The work of the staff in this Branch also provides the conceptual basis and measurement criteria for future spacecraft missions to other solar system bodies such as Mars, Titan, and comets, in search of answers to such fundamental questions in non-terrestrial settings. Introduction to Exobiology
You're driving in your car down dark road late one night with your friends. All of a sudden, you see a large circular object with blue lights spinning right in front of your car. A bright spotlight shines down on your car for ten seconds, and then leaves. As the object disappears before your eyes, you are left in amazement, wondering what just happened. Was that really a UFO? Is there really intelligent life out there in the universe? You turn around to ask your friends, only to find that one of them is missingÉ
Sound a little farfetched? OK. How about something a little more down to Earth.
You just got back from a two week vacation in Hawaii with your family. You walk into your room, throw down your suitcase, and sit on your bed. You glance over at the lamp on the table next to your bed. Reaching over to turn on the lamp, you notice a rather unpleasant smell. Looking down, there is a half full glass of what once might have been juice, but now is a nice bluish-green color with fuzz all around the edges. Yuck! Where did that come from?
Scientists have been asking these same questions for a long time now. Come explore the field of exobiology, the search for the origin of life on the Earth, and in the Universe.

From Primordial Soup to the Prebiotic Beach An interview with exobiology pioneer, Dr. Stanley L. Miller , University of California San Diego By Sean Henahan, Access Excellence Join the exobiology discussion 1n 1953, a University of Chicago graduate student named Stanley Miller working in Harold Urey's lab flipped a switch sending electric current through a chamber containing a combination of methane, ammonia, hydrogen and water. The experiment yielded organic compounds including amino acids, the building blocks of life, and catapulted a field of study known as exobiology into the headlines. Since that time a new understanding of the workings of RNA and DNA, have increased the scope of the subject. Moreover, the discovery of prebiotic conditions on other planets and the announcement of a bacterial fossil originating on Mars has brought new attention to the study of life's origins. I spoke with Dr. Miller in his lab at UCSD about the field he has helped to make famous, exobiology.
Let start with the basics. Can you give a simple definition of exobiology?

The term exobiology may be used interchangeably with the term astrobiology . Some scientists, however, restrict exobiology to mean only the study of how life might exist beyond Earth (extraterrestrial life). Exobiology is accepted as a study area within astrobiology in both approaches. Astrobiologists investigate how the formation of stars and solar systems led to the existence of planets suitable for life and how life originated on Earth and perhaps elsewhere. Astrobiologists also explore which factors have influenced biological

    Exobiology
Of all mysteries of the universe, the possibility of meeting other intelligent species must be the most provocative. It would be the greatest achievement in the History of humankind to contact other intelligent species. Unfortunately, as I debate below, I don't know whether we would survive.
    Galactic Civilizations
Geological time is in the order of millions of years. Life, which depends on the chemistry and conditions of a planet, also follows such large cosmological scales. Thus other intelligent species in the universe are not likely to be in the Bronze Age or in any age that happened to us in the last thousands of years. Possibly, if they are less intelligent than us, they would still be animals. But if we are to face a more advanced civilization they will be millions of years ahead of us because, by chance, they originated millions of years before. At a cosmological time scale, energy manipulation is a good method to classify a civilization. Nikolai Kardashev and Freeman Dyson developed the following classification for alien civilizations:
Type Level of Energy Control I Absolute control over a planet's energy.

It is focused primarily on the study of the origin , distribution and evolution of life. Given the influx of new information about planetary systems around other stars, its mandate has expanded beyond the study of exobiology (from Greek: έξω, exo , "outside") per se. The term "Xenobiology" is sometimes used as well. Some major astrobiological research topics include: What is life ? How did life arise on Earth ? What do astrophysical observations tell us about the present and future of life on earth? What kind of environments can life tolerate? How can we determine if life exists on other planets ? How often can we expect to find complex life? What will life consist of on other planets? Will it be DNA/Carbon based or based on something else? What will it look like?

    Extrasolar Planetary Systems
Detection of Earth-like Planets with Large Telescopes
Using large space-based telescopes (>10-meter) Astronomers could search for terrestrial planets with atmospheres suitable for life as we know it. Spectroscopy could be used to detect the presence of Ozone, an indicator of oxygen in the atmosphere as well as water bands. Methane produced as a result of biogenic activity could be searched for using the same methods. Using telescopes in Earth orbit planets could be searched for using direct detection methods. Stellar coronagraphs can be used to supress the light from the planet's parent star making detection easier. There is a higher probability of detecting planetary companions around nearby stars in the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. This is due to the fact that the star to planet flux ratio is less in this region of the spectrum than in the visible. To separate a planetary companion from its primary stellar halo, one must use a telescope (or array of telescopes) with an aperture (or baseline) B such that r/D is greater than or equal to the wavelength at which the observation is being carried out divided by the aperture (or baseline) of the telescope (or array of telescopes).

Exobiology: The Search for Life on Mars
Exobiologists seek to understand how life originated on Earth by studying chemical and physical conditions elsewhere in our solar system and our galaxy. The origin of life on Earth is not well understood but was evidently based on chemical evolution from simple compounds present on the newly formed planet to create a system of replicating organic chemicals. Unfortunately, it is difficult to study early Earth directly because the earliest geological formations have been largely erased by erosion and deposition. In contrast, on Mars we can still see the early crust in the form of heavily cratered highlands. Major exobiology goals for Mars are to
  • Determine whether life presently exists on Mars or, as is thought more likely, has existed in the past
  • Define the nature of early martian environments and understand differences from the early environments of Earth
  • Determine the history of the biogenic elements (Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Sulphur, Phosphorus) on Mars and of organic chemistry there (that is, the chemistry of carbon bearing compounds whether biologic or abiologic in origin) In order to achieve these goals
