You notice Dr. Carl Sagans research on Exobiology and the DNA found in the dark matter in the universe, and you suddenly remember a Time article from April 10, 1978 entitled Black Holes and Martian Valleys, which contained the following passage. A while later, astronomer Carl Sagan (The Dragons of Eden) found himself lugging his slide box into the Vice Presidents big new house and, after coffee, taking the Mondale and Carter families on a journey through the heavens. Home Info Starships Fleet Yards Treknology ... Community New York Streets Set FAQ Site Map Other Exobiology Inconsistencies Humanoid Genetics Rapid or Purposeful Evolution "Strong Aliens" Pon Farr ... Miscellaneous Humanoid Genetics Although the crews frequently encounter strange and previously unknown lifeforms, most Star Trek aliens are humanoid. They are bipedal and in possession of an upright posture, two arms, two legs, hands, feet, one thorax, a neck and a head with a brain located in it (see Humanoids at Memory Alpha). As opposed to the silicon-based lifeforms (like Horta in TOS: "Devil in the Dark"), let alone the variety of non-corporeal entities, all humanoids are based on organic carbon compounds and on DNA. Some of these humanoids are visually indistinguishable from humans . Others have have essentially the same features as humans, like the Bajorans. Still other aliens share their general phenotype (appearance) with humans, but have some special characteristics, like the Vulcans or Klingons. The question is how closely related all these distinct species can be and have to be from a genetic viewpoint. We know from TNG: "The Chase" that four billion years ago the first humanoid race left a genetic code in the form of DNA strands in the primordial oceans of countless potentially habitable planets of our galaxy that would trigger the development of humanoid life. Notwithstanding the dubious science in this assumption, as genes are not suitable to hold a "program" for a development, it becomes clear that all humanoids are in fact related to some limited extent even though they evolved in nearly complete isolation. As for the degree of isolation, we may probably discount the possibility of spores traveling through intergalactic space, whereas we can't exclude the influences of possible later ancient spacefaring species.

The Italian philosopher, priest, cosmologist, and mystic Giordano Bruno believed that an infinite number of worlds exist and harbor life. The idea of exobiology is about as old as speculations about the existence of Earthlike worlds. Metrodorus of Chios (400 BCE) believed that there were numerous other such worlds, each one approximately the Earth with planets and stars, and he stated that:
To consider the Earth as the only populated world in infinite space is as absurd as to assert that in an entire field of millet, only one grain will grow.
His opinions were held by other Atomists, like Leucippus, Democritus, and the Epicureans, but others, like Aristotle , firmly believed in the Earth's uniqueness.

Biologists are not unanimous on all the factors in the definition of life, but most agree that life is different from nonlife: It evolves or changes (by chance mutations or otherwise) as time goes on while interacting with its environment in a unique way. But most important, life is not a "thing", it is a process made up of an unimaginably large number of complex chemical reactions that collectively produce all the characteristics we associate with life.

EXOBIOLOGY
or astrobiology, search for extraterrestrial life within the solar system and throughout the universe. Philosophical speculation that there might be other worlds similar to ours dates back to the ancient Chinese and Greeks. However, the achievements of space exploration and molecular biology have turned speculation into experimentation. Parameters of a Suitable Environment for Life There are six basic parameters that determine whether an environment is suitable for life as we know it: temperature, pressure, salinity, acidity, water availability, and oxygen content. Advanced life is restricted to a narrow range of these parameters, but primitive microorganisms exist over a much wider range. Data already collected by space probes essentially rule out advanced life on other planets of our solar system; however, given the potential number of planetary systems in the galaxy, there may be as many as 50,000 planets that have earthlike conditions, a fraction of which could have cultures as technologically advanced as our own. Three decades of passive listening with radio telescopes have produced no signals comparable to those radiating from earth, but we do not know if another civilization would produce electromagnetic radiation in detectable amounts. The Search for Primitive Life

Exobiology Exobiology is the branch of biology that specializes in the search for and study of life elsewhere in the universe. Most scientists believe life on earth developed as a natural result of the physical and chemical reactions that occurred during the earth's formation and early development. Exobiologists use this belief as their main guide in the search for life on other planets.

Exobiology
Mark Howe Definitions Biology , n. Science of physical life, dealing with the morphology, physiology, origin and distribution of animals and plants. Exo - in combination, Greek, outside. Scientists define exobiology as that branch of science which deals with the morphology, physiology, origin and distribution of extra-terrestrial life, although of course this definition assumes as a basic prerequisite that such life does indeed exist! Owing to the nature of the study and Mankind's limited knowledge, this science is necessarily highly speculative, especially in the areas of morphology and physiology. This article therefore concentrates on the origin and distribution of extra-terrestrial life, these being the aspects of the subject which are more closed and well-defined. The Origin Of Life Abiogenesis Abiogenesis is the hypothesis by which life can arise from inanimate matter. The mechanism is thought to be as follows. As the infant Earth condensed, it heated up, but later, once it reached a stable density, it cooled down again. As it cooled, simple molecules such as CH (methane), NH

Instrument Details CheMin (for CHEmistry and MINeralogy) is a miniature X-ray diffraction/X-ray fluorescence (XRD/XRF) instrument designed to perform remote robotic mineralogical analyses on solid bodies of the solar system such as Mars, Venus, Europa, the Moon, asteroids, and cometary nuclei. Several portable CheMin prototypes have been built, and the most recent prototype was successfully deployed at a variety of Mars analog sites in Death Valley, California, in May 2004. This instrument was recently chosen to be a part of the scientific payload on the next major Mars lander mission, Mars Science Laboratory, scheduled to launch in 2009.

Genetologic Research
The Science of First Things - by Maarten Vanden Eynde
Transgenics
oktober 3rd, 2007 Eduardo Kac
Genesis Transgenics is a field of biomedical research transforming the use of test animals. It involves the genetic modification, cloning, and breeding of animals for specific use in testing. It can involve the production of specific cell matter via breeding and DNA recombination, so future tests can be conducted on cells alone without a living host. Transgenecists often computer clone the cells and conduct their research via electronic simulation, so that researchers in labs around the world can be involved in team experiments taking place in real-time. To create the key element of his work “ Genesis ,” bioartist Eduardo Kac translated a sentence from the book of Genesis into Morse code and converted the code into DNA base pairs according to a conversion principle he specially developed for the work. “Let man have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:26, the Bible) He then implanted the resulting “artist’s gene” into an unspecified bacteria, placed it in a Petri dish and allowed online viewers to cause—through the use of ultraviolet light—real, biological mutations in the bacteria. This action changed the biblical sentence in the bacteria as well, leading Kac to declare on his web site:
