Fragile X syndrome is a common cause of intellectual disability. Intellectual impairment can range from subtle learning disabilities to severe impairment. Fragile X syndrome is also characterised by behavioural-related difficulties, physical features, and speech and language difficulties.
    Symptoms and characteristics
Not all of the characteristics of Fragile X syndrome are seen in every person. Typical symptoms include:
    • intellectual disability (ranging from mild to severe) characteristic physical features behavioural problems speech and language difficulties.
Males tend to exhibit more extreme symptoms, for instance, they will tend to have a more severe intellectual impairment and are more likely to have certain physical features, such as large prominent ears and very flexible joints. Behavioural characteristics are also more severe and can include; attention deficit, poor eye contact and anxiety. Significant speech and language difficulties are also more typical in males. For females, only about one third have significant intellectual disability (most have mild to moderate learning difficulties) and the other symptoms listed above are often expressed to a lesser degree or in some cases are non-existent.

Several diseases that directly affect the nervous_system have a genetic component: some are due_to a mutation in a single gene, others are proving to have a more complex mode of inheritance. As our understanding of the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders deepens, common themes begin to emerge: Alzheimer brain plaques and the inclusion_bodies found in contain at_least one common component, while and spinocerebellar atrophy are all'dynamic mutation'diseases in which there_is an expansion of a DNA repeat sequence. Apoptosis is emerging as one of the molecular mechanisms invoked in several neurodegenerative_diseases , as are other, specific, intracellular signaling events. The biosynthesis of myelin and the regulation of cholesterol traffic also figure in Charcot-Marie-Tooth and Neimann-Pick disease, respectively

This WisdomCard managed by: Elisa Carter Fragile X syndrome is the most common inherited cause of mental impairement. The syndrome occurs in approximately 1 in 3600 males and 1 in 4000 to 6000 females. The majority of males with fragile X syndrome will have a significant intellectual disability. The spectrum ranges from learning disabilities to severe mental retardation and autism. About a third of the females have a significant intellectual disability. Others may have more moderate or mild learning difficulties.

        Fragile X syndrome
        From Autism Wiki
Jump to: navigation search Fragile X syndrome FXC ) is the most common inherited form of mental retardation . It was so named because one part of the X chromosome has a defective piece that appears pinched and fragile when under a microscope. Fragile X syndrome affects about two to five percent of people with autism spectrum disorders. It is important to have an autistic child checked for Fragile X, especially if the parents are considering having another child. If one child has Fragile X, there is a one-in-two chance that boys born to the same parents will have Fragile X. Other members of the family who may be contemplating having a child may also wish to be checked for the syndrome. This is important as a child with Fragile X syndrome (FXC) may develop autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, all children with FXC don't develop autism or ASD. Certain data from Fragile X Foundation may be quoted to establish linkage between FXC and autism and ASD:
        • Around 2% to 6% of all children diagnosed with autism, the cause is the Fragile X gene mutation

edit General Information about Fragile X syndrome
    • Most common form of genetically inherited mental impairment. It is inherited in a non-standard X-linked fashion (gene clinics states it is X-linked dominant other sources refer to it as X-linked recessive) FMR1 gene on X chromosome at Xq27.3 was sequenced in 1991 It makes the protein FMRP (fragile X mental retardation protein). There is evidence that FMRP plays a role in regulating protein synthesis. The number of CGG repeats in the FMR1 gene determines whether someone is classified as having no mutation, a premutation or full mutation
      • no mutation 6-54 repeats is typical (gene is active and not methylated) premutation 55-230 repeats (gene is not usually methylated) males and females usually unaffected
      edit Genotype-Phenotype Correlations
      • The phenotype of males with an FMR1 mutation is almost entirely dependent on the nature of the mutation; the phenotype of females with an FMR1 mutation is dependent on both the nature of the FMR1 mutation and random X-chromosome inactivation
