SAS/GIS SAS/GIS software provides an interactive Geographic Information System (GIS) within the SAS System. A Geographic Information System is a tool that allows you to organize and analyze data that can be referenced spatiallythat is, data that can be tied to a physical location. Many types of data have a spatial aspect, including demographics, marketing surveys, and epidemiological studies. This software also enables you to do more than simply view data in its spatial context. It allows you to interact with data by selecting features and performing actions based on those selections. SAS/GIS software draws on computing capabilities of the SAS System and enables you to access, manage, analyze, and present your data easily.

Welcome to the California Geographic Information Systems (GIS) web portal.  The California Mapping Coordinating Committee (CMCC) is in the process of developing a series of GIS-related web pages to provide information on State government GIS activities, access to statewide GIS data, and links to the larger California GIS community.  This website and the Spatial Information Library are works in progress. Starting July 1, 2001 some of California's physical and cultural geospatial information, formerly distributed by the Teale Data Center, is being distributed to the public by the California Mapping Coordinating Committee through servers at the California Environmental Resources Evaluation System (CERES) in the Resources Agency and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Research Center. Note: CMCC will be working to update and improve some of the spatial data in the library and provide access or links to more up-to-date data served by others over the next several years as need and funding permit.  Caution should be exercised when using some of the layers of data as they are somewhat outdated; particularly those datasets that change rapidly (i.e., schools, health facilities, etc.).  We strongly recommend that users refer to the metadata or information about GIS datasets for appropriate uses of the data, source information, scale information, and general quality.

The GIS History Project
The GIS History Project was launched at a workshop held in Santa Barbara, California, in September of 1996. The workshop was held because a critical examination of the history of GIS was identified as a high-priority research topic at the Specialist Meeting for the NCGIA's Initiative 19, GIS and Society: The Social Implications of How People, Space, and Environment are Represented in GIS The goals of The GIS History Project are:
  • to foster research on the history of GIS by all scholars, whether or not they are directly involved in the project
  • to document the history of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), especially the early days of the technology
  • to develop and maintain a professionally-managed archive for materials related to the history of GIS
  • to coordinate research on the history of GIS, and act as a clearing house whereby GIS history researchers can find out what research has been completed, what is underway, and which topics have not yet been addressed
  • to disseminate results and findings as broadly as possible in a variety of forms to reach educational and scholarly communites and the general public

MapDirect MapDirect (aka the Consolidated Application, nicknamed "CA") has been launched. The MapDirect application replaces a number of existing single-purpose web mapping applications into a single integrated application with extensive capabilities. This integration should enhance overall ease of use and will result in lower software development and maintenance costs. Mapdirect provides access to a large number of FDEP data layers and imagery layers, provides buffer analysis capabilities, provides "drill-down" reporting capabilities, and provides general data browsing.
