Left : Emanuele on his knees away from the station, collecting a snow sample. Snow samples are collected twice daily, at two different location, 1.5km and 0.5km away from the station, with the glacio shelter partway between them. The official title of Emanuele's research here is: " Paleo-climate and paleo-environment from ice core chemical, physical and isotopic stratigraphies ". That's a mouthful. And indeed he was very busy all winter, almost never having time to watch the odd movie at night and running around to his sampling areas several times every day. We estimate that he walked outside more than 1000km, which would have been enough to reach the coast.

Glacial Geology: Ice Sheets and Landforms
This book provides a modern comprehensive summary of glacial geology. During the Late Cenozoic period much of the northern hemisphere was extensively glaciated. This had a profound affect on the nature of the landscape. In order to understand this landscape one must be able to identify and interpret the glacial landforms and sediments from which it is composed. In a clear and precise format, this book explains these landforms and sediments and provides the reader with the tools with which to interpret them. It shows how glaciers work and how the processes of glacial erosion and deposition which operate within them are recorded. Modern and Past Glacial Environments
This text is produced with the student mind, providing accessibility to a complex subject and introducing topics that provide the fundamental underpinnings of knowledge on glaciers, ice sheets, their sediments and landscapes. Modern and Past Glacial Environments features a large collection of photographs, line diagrams and tables and includes examples of glacial environments and landscapes which are drawn from a world wide perspective. Together with a web- based set of current and comprehensive references and bibliographic sources, it provides an ideal reference text.

    Glaciology Course
Last week I returned from Svalbard after taking a month long course in glaciology at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS). This course was designed to be a month long, intensive study of glaciology for students at the Masters or PhD level in the fields of physical geography or glacial geology. The month long course was divided into 4 themes: glacier systems, mass balance and Svalbard glaciers, glacier dynamics, and glacier modeling. Each theme was taught by an expert in that specific subfield. The teaching staff consisted of Doug Benn, Jon-Ove Hagen, Tavi Murray, Nick Hulton, and Ian Rutt. Overall this course provided a good overview to the current state of glaciology. In addition to the coursework, this course also provided an excellent opportunity to get to know other people in the field and to go on trips near Longyearbyen in our free time. In the long run, this social interaction was more valuable the academic work as I now have met a number of young scientists who are interested in glaciology and with whom I will likely interact in the future.

Glaciology Photos Sastrugi formations near the IGY Little America Station. Sastrugi is produced when soft snow is moved across hard snow by Antarctic winds. IGY glaciologist holding a snow core obtained from the hand auger dismantled beside him. The core was used for stratographic and crystalographic study, and chemical and radio-isotopic analysis. Examination of such cores, obtained at depths of up to 1000 feet, revealed much concerning the past climate, vegetation, amount of snowfall, and other features of the region. Auger set consisting of the auger, extensions, connecting pins and Harley pins, a brace and adapter, and a guide. This set was used to obtain cylindrically shaped samples, or "cores," of snow for stratographic, petrofabric, and isotopic analyses, as well as for density measurements. Glaciologist employing a rammsonde penetrometer to determine snow hardness. A weight on the rod is raised and dropped while a linear scale records the instrument's depth of penetration into the snow. Glaciologist examining the interior of a snow cave at Kainan Bay, Antarctica. Such caves are formed by the wind and the movement of the ice.

How can Altimetry be used for Glaciology?
There now exists radar altimeter measurements from 1978 through the present of the Greenland and Antarctic Ice sheets, the spatial and temporal coverage is summarized in this table . The NASA Pathfinder program is endeavoring to reference data from all missions into a common datum using a common set of atmospheric, instrument, and earth dynamic corrections where possible. This will give scientists a time-series of consistent data over 20 years to investigate seasonal and interannual variations of the ice-sheet surface balance, which is caused by variations in snowfall and ice melting ( Zwally et al. 1989 Lingle et al. 1994 ) In addition, precise measurements of elevation changes can be used to estimate total mass balance of the ice sheets, which had not been obtainable to sufficient accuracy with other techniques. The crossover data gives elevations for different tracks at the same location, are best used for ice sheet change studies. The multi-mission data can also be combined to give dense topographic coverage crucial for a variety of glaciological studies, from numerical modeling of the ice dynamics to monitoring of key glaciological features: ice drainage basins, ice-shelf grounding lines, ice divides, subglacial lakes, ice shelf fronts, and ice rises.

Notwithstanding these improvements, a steadily shrinking pool of personnel dedicated to interpreting and understanding glaciological data, especially data pertaining to glacier change, makes efficiency afforded by technology all the more critical. It also requires organization and coordination, which can enhance efficiency and geographic coverage of glacier changes, provide for checks on accuracy and uniformity of reported data, and reduce excessive redundancy of effort. This is the context in which Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS, http://www.glims.org) was developed as a team member project for ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and reflection Radiometer). GLIMS is seen as a logical extension of the Satellite Image Atlas and the World Glacier Inventory. Figure 1 Analysis results are being contributed by researchers around the world. To organize and archive these results, a global glacier database has been designed at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC, Boulder, Colorado). Parameters are compatible with and expanded from those of the World Glacier Inventory (WGI). 2. Types of ASTER image applications.
