Climate change Greenhouse gases Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are a category of substances, which, under their gaseous form, have a greenhouse effect upon the atmosphere. By preventing infrared radiation to escape the atmosphere (this phenomenon happens naturally to evacuate a part of the heat accumulated by the earth through the ultraviolet radiation from the sun), they contribute to make its temperature increase. The main greenhouse gases are:

Greenhouse gas
From Conservapedia
(Redirected from Greenhouse gases Jump to: navigation search It has been suggested that this article or section be merged with greenhouse effect Discuss A greenhouse gas is any gas which contributes to the greenhouse effect The most important greenhouse gas is water vapor Also important are carbon dioxide methane nitrous oxide , and ozone The nature of a greenhouse gas is to pass visible light , i.e., incoming energy from the sun, but to be opaque to the infrared , i.e., heat energy being re-radiated outward from the earth's surface. This functions much like the glass on a man-made greenhouse , and serves to trap warmth at the surface and in the lower atmosphere

    Greenhouse gas
Redirected from Greenhouse gases Greenhouse gases are gaseous components of the atmosphere that contribute to the greenhouse effect (see also global warming ). The principal greenhouse gases are water vapor, carbon dioxide methane nitrous oxide and ozone . Industrial greenhouse gases include the heavy halocarbons ( chlorinated fluorocarbons ), CFC, HCFC-22 molecules such as freon and perfluoromethane[?] , and sulphur hexafluoride[?] (SF Greenhouse gases are transparent to certain wavelengths of the sun 's radiant energy[?] , allowing them to penetrate deep into the atmosphere or all the way into the Earth's surface. Greenhouse gases and clouds prevent some of infrared radiation from escaping, trapping the heat near the Earth's surface where it warms the lower atmosphere. Alteration of this natural barrier of atmospheric gases can raise or lower the mean global temperature of the Earth. The concentrations of several greenhouse gases have increased over time, mostly due to human activities, such as:
    • burning of fossil fuels leading to higher carbon dioxide concentrations

    Do Climate Models Have Skill?
The best way to tell if climate models work is if they can predict, for
example, temperatures that have not yet happened. If they can, and they
can beat a simple forecast of "the average", then they are said to have
skill, and we can believe what they have to say. Do climate models have skill? Nobody knows. In part, this is not the fault of climatologists because we don't have enough independent years measured yet. We have plenty of years worth of data used to fit climate models, and the models can of course be "tuned" to re-produce the input

    The Greenhouse Gases
Almost all of the Earth's atmosphere (99 ) is made up of nitrogen (about 78 ) and oxygen (about 21 ). While both of these gases play important roles in the vast number of processes that support life on Earth, they play almost no direct role in regulating the climate. This is carried out by some of the trace gases in the remaining 1 of the atmosphere which occur in relatively small amounts: Although the proportion of the trace gases in the atmosphere appears relatively small, they can still have a big impact on climate change - and they are mainly caused by human activities. Greenhouse gases
    From dKosopedia
Jump to: navigation search The principal greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide (CO ), but others include methane, and oxides of sulfur and nitrogen. Human activity, such as the use of fossil fuels for energy production, has emitted substantial quantities of greenhouse gases into the earth's atmosphere to the point that CO levels in the atmosphere are measurably increasing to a degree unprecedented in Earth's history. These gases absorb infrared radiation, increasing the extent to which reflected sunlight is absorbed by the earth's atmosphere (i.e., trapping heat that would otherwise be radiated into space).
