Mission of the UC Groundwater Cooperative Extension Program "The mission of the UCCE Groundwater Hydrology Program is to provide educational and scientific/technical support on current and emerging groundwater resources and groundwater quality issues in rural areas of California." Our groundwater education and outreach program primarily works with the water resources industry (public water supply utilities, irrigation districts, water districts, etc.), research, planning, and regulatory agencies on the local, county, state and federal level, farm advisors in county cooperative extension, and the agricultural industry. The components of the program are: 1) an integrated basic and applied research program that emphasizes hydrogeologic processes, contaminant fate and transport in both vadose zone and groundwater, and techniques for sampling, monitoring, and mitigation of contamination and groundwater quality problems; 2) an extension program that provides educational and technical support to local, state, and federal regulatory agencies, to natural resources conservation districts, irrigation and water districts, county farm advisors and policy makers in both the agricultural and urban sectors in the state;

The depletion of groundwater (aquifers) can lead to the drying of wooden piles due to wood pile rot under structures, causing buildings to collapse or requiring them to be demolished. The trust is located in Boston, Massachusetts. Areas in Boston the trust monitors include the Back Bay and Beacon Hill neighborhoods. The trustees are:

    elping citizens and governments manage the groundwater in Wisconsin wisely, through education, public information, applied research, and technical assistance.
    Groundwater is an essential resource in Wisconsin. It provides drinking water for 70% of Wisconsin residents and 95% of Wisconsin communities. Groundwater also feeds our lakes, streams and wetlands and helps sustain the many creatures who live there. Throughout history, groundwater has been a hidden and often misunderstood resource - "out of sight and out of mind." However, as population grows and land uses intensify, threats to groundwater quality and quantity are increasing. Individuals and communities need help in using information and developing skills to decide the future of their drinking water and groundwater resources. That is the reason the Central Wisconsin Groundwater Center was established in 1985. The Center is an affiliate of the Center for Watershed Science and Education . It is part of the University of Wisconsin - Extension Cooperative Extension Service and housed in the College of Natural Resources at UW-Stevens Point. (

    The land surface was traditionally considered to be sufficient to protect the quality of underlying groundwater. It is now recognized that natural soil processes that change contaminants into harmless substances are often overwhelmed by waste products from human activities. Groundwater protection programs require an understanding of the groundwater resource. The purpose of this bulletin is to help the reader become more knowledgeable about groundwater and the terminology commonly used to describe it. A pictorial approach is used to enable the reader to quickly grasp basic groundwater terms and concepts. The information contained in this bulletin should help local government officials and citizens become informed and able to make decisions on how to protect and manage community groundwater resources.

      This overview of the science necessary to understand groundwater issues is taken from Chapter 2 of the Washington State, Department of Ecology, Ground Water Resource Protection Handbook, Published December 1986.
    HYDROLOGIC CYCLE
      The hydrologic cycle is a constant movement of water above, on, and below the earth's surface. It is a cycle that replenishes ground water supplies. It begins as water vaporizes into the atmosphere from vegetation, soil, lakes, rivers, snowfields and oceans-a process called evapotranspiration As the water vapor rises it condenses to form clouds that return water to the land through precipitation: rain, snow, or hail. Precipitation falls on the earth and either percolates into the soil or flows across the ground. Usually it does both. When precipitation percolates into the soil it is called infiltration ; when it flows across the ground it is called surface runoff . The amount of precipitation that infiltrates, versus the amount that flows across the surface, varies depending on factors such as the amount of water already in the soil, soil composition, vegetation cover and degree of slope. Surface runoff eventually reaches a stream or other surface water body where it is again evaporated into the atmosphere. Infiltration, however, moves under the force of gravity through the soil. If soils are dry, water is absorbed by the soil until it is thoroughly wetted. Then excess infiltration begins to move slowly downward to the water table. Once it reaches the water table, it is called

    The Groundwater Modeling Program (GMP) has provided groundwater modeling support on a department-wide basis since 1980 when an EPA grant was used to fund the use of groundwater models for site remediation. Initially, the GMP was part of the Hydrologic Studies Unit (HSU) of the Land and Water Management Division (LWMD), today, it is part of the Remediation and Redevelopment Division.
