Herpetology in the Northwest
The Northwest is full of wildlife, but the most overlooked species is the herp population. This site is dedicated to the education and awareness of Snakes, Lizards, Frogs, and Turtles of the Northwest region of the United States. The vision is to inspire the Northwest community to create a better future for Reptiles and Amphibians.

Facts that Bite!
Oregon is home to many endangered, threatened and sensitive species. These total at 35 Mamals, 65 Birds, 36 Reptiles and Amphibians, 40 Fish, 3 Butterflies and 42 Invertabrates.
Get involved in Herpetology!
The Northwest which includes Washington, Idaho, and Oregon provides the perfect habitat for some of the best creatures that walk this planet. Becoming involved gets you and others around you involved protecting these reptiles and amphibians of the great Northwest! Herpetology as a hobbie or for conservation, this site provides you the resources to get started! Get into Action
About Herpetology Northwest Conservation
Herpetology Northwest really believes in the importance of preserving the habitats of the Northwest reptiles and amphibians. The only way this is possible is through education at all levels. It is our responsibility to observe, study and learn about all species that reside in the northwest! Through our own education and understanding the more we can do to educate others to guarantee a healthy future for all species. If we don't take action now, we are going to pay the ultimate price.

Collections
The herpetological collection at the Burke Museum contains 4,200 specimens of amphibians and reptiles, primarily from the Pacific Northwest; it is particularly strong in amphibians and garter snakes from this area. The more than 2,200 specimens in the cataloged collection are mostly forest-dwelling amphibians from Western Washington obtained during wildlife studies in the 1980s and early 1990s. About half the uncataloged material is garter snakes collected by William Hebard during the mid-1900s. The collection consists largely of alcohol-reserved spacimens with a small number of photographs and skeletons. Learn about the history of the herpetological collection People The herpetological collection is maintained by a volunteer curator. Consequently, the capacity for loaning herpetological specimens to other institutions is limited.

Careers in Herpetology So you want to be a herpetologist? That is an admirable choice, but you should have a strong desire to study reptiles and amphibians for the road to a career in herpetology is not an easy one but it is an interesting one. Careers in Herpetology Years ago it was possible for individuals to study amphibians and reptiles on their own, perhaps by maintaining large collections of animals or by studying them in the wild, and learn enough to get a position at a zoo or museum as a herpetologist. Today, however, techniques for conducting nearly any biological study have become so sophisticated, and competition for jobs has become so intense, that a college degree is a necessity in order to pursue a career in herpetology. Often an advanced degree (masters or doctorate) in biology, anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, or some related field is required for almost any specialized job. Many, if not most, herpetologists today are employed at colleges or universities and an advanced degree is usually a condition of employment at such institutions. The specific training required for a career in herpetology varies according to one's goals. In virtually all cases a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science degree with a major in biology is required. Courses in inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry, calculus, physics and/or earth science should be taken. Statistics is now a necessary tool in biological studies and courses in this area are essential. A great deal of herpetological research is conducted in other countries and facility in one or more foreign languages allows one to follow such activities in other nations. As in other branches of science, computer literacy is indispensable and students should enroll in courses that provide training in computer use.

The Herp Atlas was initiated in 1986 at the Milwaukee Public Museum , with the cooperative support of the Natural Heritage Inventory Program (Bureau of Endangered Resources, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources; and The Nature Conservancy, Wisconsin Chapter ). The Herp Atlas is a computerized database of amphibian and reptile distribution, based on records obtained from museum collections, field surveys, literature, and field notes provided by volunteer observers throughout the state. Vertebrate Zoology
Herpetology
Division of Vertebrate Zoology is worldwide in scope, with over 23,000 specimens and specimen lots of amphibians (over 300 taxa) and reptiles (more than 1,300 taxa). Holdings include 95 type specimens of 8 taxa in both wet and osteological collections.
Most specimens were collected after the 1930s, and recent expeditions have added significantly to the collection. Additionally, field collecting in New England and elsewhere in the United States has improved the taxonomic diversity of the North American holdings. New England collections include specimens from the Maine Amphibian and Reptile Atlas Project, as well as from the Connecticut Amphibian Monitoring Project (in which the Yale Peabody Museum is a partner institution).
Specimens collected in the 19th century were not preserved with formalin, and so are suitable today for research techniques such as DNA sequencing. Often these specimens represent locality records that no longer exist, making them valuable for the study of systematic, phylogenetic, population and biogeographical patterns.
