Current and Recent Research Projects Overview Researchers are motivated by several overarching questions: How is the surface of the Earth changing? What has been the impact of human activity on the Earth? How sustainable are our water resources? How has climate changed in the past? How will climate change in the future? How will climate change affect the land surface (e.g., water resources, air quality, high-latitude water storage and albedo)? How realistic are climate models? How can we improve them? And how uncertain are climate-model predictions? Back to previous Hydrogeology The University of Texas at Austin campus is close to many unique and beautiful hydrogeological features which offer students and researchers ample opportunities for research. These include Edwards Aquifer, Barton Springs, Hamilton Pool, Bull Creek, Colorado River, San Marcos River and Springs, and Salado Springs. The city of Austin itself is located in a karst discharge area which is undergoing rapid urbanization. Farther afield, the State of Texas offers a wide variety of hydrogeological settings which include arid basins in the west, the Ogallala aquifer of the High Plains, Precambrian rocks of the Llano Uplift, and the large Gulf Coast aquifers.

Hydrogeology Section
The ISGS Hydrogeology Section conducts research related to groundwater, a resource used by one-third of all Illinois households, farms, businesses, and industries. Nearly 1,200 regulated community water utilities and another 4,300 regulated water supplies depend on groundwater in Illinois; roughly 400,000 rural households rely on private wells. Most users meet their groundwater needs by tapping into groundwater aquifers, especially the water-yielding sand and gravel materials of glacial origin. About 45 percent of all Illinois water wells tap aquifers in glacial materials, some of which have little protection from contamination.
Mission
To investigate and report on the hydrogeology of Illinois and to provide the people and institutions of Illinois with a scientific basis for the protection and beneficial use of its groundwater resources.

Hydrogeology, Water Quality, and Saltwater Intrusion in the Upper Floridan Aquifer in the Offshore Area near Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and Tybee Island, Georgia, 1999–2002
(Published 2006)
ONLINE ONLY By W. Fred Falls, Camille Ransom, James E. Landmeyer, Eric J. Reuber, and Lucy E. Edwards This report is available online in pdf format: USGS SIR 2005-5134 (4 Mb) and a high-resolution format: USGS SIR 2005-5134 (42 Mb)
ABSTRACT
To assess the hydrogeology, water quality, and the potential for saltwater intrusion in the offshore Upper Floridan aquifer, a scientific investigation was conducted near Tybee Island, Georgia, and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Four temporary wells were drilled at 7, 8, 10, and 15 miles to the northeast of Tybee Island, and one temporary well was drilled in Calibogue Sound west of Hilton Head Island. The Upper Floridan aquifer at the offshore and Calibogue sites includes the unconsolidated calcareous quartz sand, calcareous quartz sandstone, and sandy limestone of the Oligocene Lazaretto Creek and Tiger Leap Formations, and the limestone of the late Eocene Ocala Limestone and middle Avon Park Formation. At the 7-, 10-, and 15-mile sites, the upper confining unit between the Upper Floridan and surficial aquifers correlates to the Miocene Marks Head Formation. Paleochannel incisions have completely removed the upper confining unit at the Calibogue site and all but a 0.8-foot-thick interval of the confining unit at the 8-mile site, raising concern about the potential for saltwater intrusion through the paleochannel-fill sediments at these two sites. The paleochannel incisions at the Calibogue and 8-mile sites are filled with fine- and coarse-grained sediments, respectively.
