What is hydrology and what do hydrologists do?
Hydrology is the study of water
Water is one of our most important natural resources. Without it, there would be no life on earth. The supply of water available for our use is limited by nature. Although there is plenty of water on earth, it is not always in the right place, at the right time and of the right quality. Adding to the problem is the increasing evidence that chemical wastes improperly discarded yesterday are showing up in our water supplies today. Hydrology has evolved as a science in response to the need to understand the complex water systems of the Earthand help solve water problems. Hydrologists play a vital role in finding solutions to water problems, and interesting and challenging careers are available to those who choose to study hydrology.
Water has many aspects to study
What Hydrologists Do?
Careers in Hydrology
Students who plan to become hydrologists need a strong emphasis in mathematics, statistics, geology, physics, computer science, chemistry and biology. In addition, sufficient background in other subjectseconomics, public finance, environmental law, government policyis needed to communicate with experts in these fields and to understand the implications of their work on hydrology. Communicating clearly in writing and speech is a basic requirement essential for any professional person. Hydrologists should be able to work well with people, not only as part of a team with other scientists and engineers, but also in public relations, whether it be advising governmental leaders or informing the general public on water issues. Hydrology offers a variety of interesting and challenging carrer choices for today and tomorrow. It's a field worth considering.

HYDROLOGY
Hydrology, the way in which a wetland is supplied with water, is one of the most important factors in determining the way in which a wetland will function, what plants and animals will occur within it, and how the wetland should be managed. Since wetlands occur in a transition zone where water based ecosystems gradually change to land based ecosystems, a small difference in the amount, timing or duration of the water supply can result in a profound change in the nature of the wetland and its unique plants, animals and processes.
Hydroperiod is the seasonal pattern of the water level that results from the combination of the water budget and the storage capacity of the wetland. The water budget is a term applied to the net of the inflows, all the water flowing into, and outflows, all the water flowing out of, a wetland. The storage capacity of the wetland is determined by the geology, the subsurface soil, the groundwater levels, the surface contours and the vegetation. The hydroperiod of coastal wetlands exhibits the daily and monthly fluctuations associated with tides, whereas inland wetlands tend to show, to a greater degree, the effects of storm and seasonal events such as spring thaw, fall rains and intermittent storm events.
In headwater areas where streams originate, watersheds tend to be small and have shallow soils with low water storage capacity. Hydroperiods of wetlands in headwater areas often show water levels that rise and fall rapidly in response to localized storm events which supply the streams and wetlands with runoff. An exception is areas where soils are dominated by sandy glacial deposits. These areas

Our research activities cover a broad range of water resource issues:
  • We assess the impacts of climate change, hydropower, and irrigation on watershed health. We measure and predict the quantity of precipitation that infiltrates the soil surface and eventually recharges the aquifer. We measure and predict the movement of fluids, gases, and contaminants through the soil and vadose zone above the water table. We measure and predict the movement of groundwater and the transport of contaminants to streams and rivers, as well as to and from wells used for irrigation or remediation activities. We analyze complex problems involving the impacts of seasonal water availability, temperature, suspended sediment, and dissolved gases in rivers systems, especially the impacts of dams and their operation.
Our solutions to problems can range from the simple (and quick!) to the sophisticated. Which solution we use will depend on your problem as well as your needs and resources.
