The USA Soil Conservation Service (now called the Natural Resources Conservation Service), division of the USDA (USA Department of Agriculture) has worked for decades developing equations and conducting experiments to determine reliable models for predicting peak discharge from storm events. Relying upon extensive research, Technical Release 55 (TR-55: SCS, 1986) presents a methodical and reliable approach to predicting peak discharge due to a 24-hr storm event. (This web page uses TR-55 and SCS (1986) interchangeably; they are the same document.) TR-55 is valid for watersheds that have a time of concentration from 0.1 to 10 hr. Such watersheds are considered small. Our calculation uses the equations and graphs (coded into equations) in TR-55 chapters 1 thru 4 to solve for peak discharge. Chapter 5 (titled Tabular Hydrograph Method) also solves for peak discharge but models more complicated watersheds - watersheds that have several main channels requiring channel hydrograph routing techniques. Hydrograph routing software is more suitable for stand-alone computer programs rather than for programs that run from the world wide web.

As part of their research activities, the members of this team have been investigating the causes and effects of lightning as well as analyzing a wide variety of atmospheric measurements related to thunderstorms. One of the primary objectives of this group is to determine the relationship between the electrical characteristics of storms and precipitation, convection, and severe weather. In order to achieve this objective, the GHCC Lightning Team has designed, constructed and deployed numerous types of ground based, airborne, and space based sensors used to detect lightning and characterize the electrical behavior of thunderstorms. The data collected by the GHCC Lightning Team is routinely shared with scientists around the globe, resulting in numerous advancements in the field of Atmospheric Science. The Hillslope and Watershed Hydrology group at Oregon State University is led by Professor Jeff McDonnell Richardson Chair in Watershed Science in the Department of Forest Engineering . The group's mission to is develop a general understanding of runoff generation processes in diverse watersheds. We address basic questions like:
  • Where does water go when it rains?
How long does it reside in the watershed?
What pathway does it take to the stream channel?
Our group conducts field, lab and modeling investigations combining hydrometric and tracer-based techniques with the aim of using this knowledge for land management and understanding environmental change and variability. The Post Docs and PhD students in the group are active experimentalists working on similar questions in diverse watershed settings. Our goal is to seek new understanding and model formulations by conducting watershed intercomparison and exploring the common features of watershed response across diverse scales, climates, and hydrogeological settings.

Hyperlocalizing Hydrology in the Post-Industrial Urban Landscape

(A new way of managing stormwater runoff at NE Siskiyou Green Street, Portland, Oregon. Photo by Kevin Robert Perry.)
Last year, Kevin Robert Perry won an ASLA Professional Award for a truly innovative stormwater management system he designed for the city of Portland, Oregon. Referred to as the “first of its kind anywhere,” Perry's project replaced the city's combined storm/sewer pipe system with a landscaped curb extension carved out of a portion of the street's parking zone.
In other words, instead of using expensive and high maintenance system to funnel urban runoffs to distant, equally expensive and high maintenance treatment facilities and discharge points, they are instead managed on-site with simple, cost-effective, attractive and environmentally sustainable infrastructure.

The Land Surface Hydrology Research Group at the University of Washington is made up of three faculty members, ten graduate students, and six research scientists and postdoctoral research associates. We are part of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington . Our main research interest is modeling and predicting the role of land hydrology in the climate system, and understanding the nature of hydrologic variability and change as they are related to changing climate and land cover/land use. We do so through a combination of hydrologic modeling, and diagnosis of contemporary and retrospective in situ and remote sensing data. While much of our work is at regional, continental, and global scales, we also have modeling and prediction interests at the small watershed scale. This web site contains information about the interests and research of group members and collaborators , as well as recent publications, the models we use (including some documentation and contact information for source codes), some of the data sets produced by the group, and links to data sets and processing software that we use in our modeling. In addition to publications , the research area of this web site includes most of the presentations (oral and poster) given by members of the group from about 2000 on.

Basic ground-water hydrology
U.S. Geological Survey, Water Supply Paper 2220
by Ralph C. Heath This report is available as a .djvu file at: http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/pubs/wsp/wsp2220
Preface
Ground water is one of the Nation's most valuable natural resources . It is the source of about 40 percent of the water used for all purposes exclusive of hydropower generation and electric powerplant cooling. Surprisingly, for a resource that is so widely used and so important to the health and to the economy of the country, the occurrence of ground water is not only poorly understood but is also, in fact, the subject of many widespread misconceptions . Common misconceptions include the belief that ground water occurs in underground rivers resembling surface streams whose presence can be detected by certain individuals . These misconceptions and others have hampered the development and conservation of ground water and have adversely affected the protection of its quality. In order for the Nation to receive maximum benefit from its ground-water resource, it is essential that everyone, from the rural homeowner to managers of industrial and municipal water supplies to heads of Federal and State water-regulatory agencies, become more knowledgeable about the occurrence, development, and protection of ground water. This report has been prepared to help meet the needs of these groups, as well as the needs of hydrologists, well drillers, and others engaged in the study and development of ground-water supplies . It consists of 45 sections on the basic elements of ground-water hydrology, arranged in order from the most basic aspects of the subject through a discussion of the methods used to determine the yield of aquifers to a discussion of common problems encountered in the operation of ground-water supplies.

    Aims and Scope
Hydrology and Earth System Sciences (HESS) is an international two-stage open access journal for the publication of original research in hydrology, placed within a holistic Earth System Science context. The discussion and peer-review of submitted papers are handled in the open access discussion journal HESSD. Final papers, upon acceptance, appear in HESS (see Review Process under the heading Review). HESS encourages and supports fundamental and applied research that seeks to understand the interactions between water, earth, ecosystems and man. A multi-disciplinary approach is encouraged that enables a broadening of the hydrologic perspective and the advancement of hydrologic science through the integration with other cognate sciences, and the cross-fertilization across disciplinary boundaries. HESS, therefore, has the ambition to serve not only the community of hydrologists, but all earth and life scientists, water engineers and water managers, who wish to publish original findings on the interactions between hydrological processes and other physical, chemical, biological and societal processes within the earth system, and the utilization of this holistic understanding towards sustainable management of water resources, water quality and water-related natural hazards.
