From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) deals with the content of interior air that could affect health and comfort of building occupants. The IAQ may be compromised by microbial contaminants ( mold bacteria ), chemicals (such as carbon monoxide radon allergens , or any mass or energy stressor that can induce health effects. Recent findings have demonstrated that indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air (albeit with different pollutants) although this has not changed the common understanding of air pollution . In fact, indoor air is often a greater health hazard than the corresponding outdoor setting. Using ventilation to dilute contaminants, filtration, and source control are the primary methods for improving indoor air quality in most buildings. Techniques for analyzing IAQ include collection of air samples, collection of samples on building surfaces and computer modelling of air flow inside buildings. The resulting samples can be analyzed for mold, bacteria, chemicals or other stressors. These investigations can lead to an understanding of the sources of the contaminants and ultimately to strategies for removing the unwanted elements from the air.

"I consider Aires to be the consummate Professionals. When my clients have a problem, they are the people I call."
Scott Nemanich, Attorney at Law
I ndoor Air Quality, Mold Lead and Asbestos are some of today's most prominent concerns among schools, office buildings, factories, retirement communities and hospitals, with indoor air pollution consistently ranking among the top five environmental risks to public health. We at Aires take a practical and cost effective approach to indoor air issues. We feel the key to these issues is through understanding. Aires has found that where IAQ issues are a concern, those involved are often misinformed. This lack of knowledge and information often brings about the reaction of fear when situations are identified. This could result in ill-advised and costly responses. Our experienced professionals have assisted many clients in developing practical responses to situations. We are not only capable of performing focused air evaluations, but also are skilled in communicating our findings to all interested parties. "...District 226 is pleased to officially recognize Aires Consulting Group of Batavia, Illinois for their assistance in resolving indoor air quality issues within our District Buildings. The Aires personal interaction with students and staff members was the key to success. Their technical approach was creative and cost-effective..."

Research Paper by Nicole Bijlsma (2005). Indoor Air Quality - a Dilemma
Introduction Like clean water, air is something we all take for granted, but can we afford to be so complacent? Despite the fact that we inhale some 10,000 litres of air per day (Carola et al 1992), and indoor air is rated among the top four environmental health risks facing this planet according to the US EPA, indoor air quality (IAQ) remains largely ignored by government and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) authorities.
This paper will explore the complexities underpinning IAQ in a relatively new (4 year old) mechanically ventilated open plan office and the various contaminants likely to be involved. Environmental tobacco smoke is strictly prohibited from this office, so this will not be discussed as a hazard. This office has a designated OHS representative who does not have access to any indoor air quality monitoring equipment. back to top
Indoor Air Quality - A Dilemma
Indoor air is defined by the NHMRC as any non-industrial indoor space where a person spends a period of an hour or more in any day such as an office, classroom, motor vehicle, shopping centre, hospital and home (cited in Environment Australia 2001). CASANZ (2002) consider indoor air pollution as all those air pollutants that are not controlled by occupational or ambient legislation in the environment.

Indoor Air Quality Help yourself to a healthy home! Should You Be Concerned? It is not always easy to determine if your home has poor air quality. Bad smells and smoke are noticeable, but you cannot see or smell other dangers, like carbon monoxide or radon. Asthma and Allergies If someone in your home has health problems or is ill, polluted indoor air can make them feel worse. For example, asthma is a lung disease that affects a growing number of children. Indoor air pollution can make it worse. Insects and other pests can be a real problem for people with asthma or allergies. For example, cockroach and dust mite droppings cause asthma attacks in some people. Pesticides can help fight these pests, but can be dangerous. Mold Mold grows in wet or damp places, and often smells musty. Many people are allergic to mold. Some molds are toxic, and coming into contact with large amounts of mold may cause health problems. Talk to a doctor if you think mold is causing health problems for you or your family. Carbon Monoxide Carbon monoxide is a deadly gas that can come from appliances that burn gas, oil, coal, or wood, and are not working as they should. Car exhaust also has carbon monoxide. You cannot see, taste or smell carbon monoxide.

Indoor Air Quality When it comes to indoor air quality, everyone agrees a cleaner indoor environment is better for overall health. Many allergies, asthma, and hay fever symptoms can be relieved by your systems ability to remove irritating dust, pollens and molds from circulating air. Research indicates that in a healthy inside environment, polluted indoor air should be exchanged with fresh outside air every 2 to 3 hours. Power Humidification An environment of dry, harsh air can make you uncomfortable as well as damaging wood furniture and personal items. By choosing to activate a humidifier , you can successfully manipulate indoor air to be more comfortable and less irritating. Electronic Air Cleaners (EAC) Normal filters are installed only to protect the equipment by removing particles to a size as can be seen by the unaided eye. An electronic air cleaner from Honeywell will remove material as small as .01 micron. That is so small that 100,000 of them could fit on the head of an ordinary pin. This includes items such as some viruses, bacteria, carbon particles, cooking and grease smoke, tobacco smoke, wood smoke, household dust, insecticide dusts, smog and atmospheric dust. The modules can be washed in your dishwasher and offer the utmost when it come to home air cleanup. Media Filter A media filter is the next best thing after an EAC. A media filter by

INDOOR AIR QUALITY Return to homepage Several factors can affect the indoor air quality of a building. Most often, unfavorable air quality is the result of mold and fungal growth, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from cleaning or maintenance procedures, air intake contamination from vehicles, maintenance operations such as snow removal equipment or from exhaust air being blown back in to the air intake, and lack of adequate air exchanges. These are just a few of the more common complaints. The fact is that IAQ problems are hard to track down due to the variety of potential sources and the inconsistencies of when the problem occurs on a day to day basis.
  • Carbon monoxide (CO) Mold and Fungi both viable and nonviable Carbon dioxide (CO2) Culture viable microbes for species identification Temperature Airborne particles Humidity Asbestos Volatile Organic Compounds And much more

Plants can be a source of mold and fungi that may cause allergic type reactions. If there plants in your work area, experiment with moving one or more types out at a time and see if the reaction is less over the next few days. Some perfumes, lotions, deodorants, etc. can cause reactions in people who have greater sensitivity. Be cognizant of the people in your area and their sensitivities.

      Ozone Generators
      What Is Ozone Air Pollution?
Ozone is a potent lung irritant and exposure to elevated levels is a contributor to the exacerbation of lung disease; it is especially dangerous for persons with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, children, and the elderly. Residential indoor ozone is produced directly by ozone generators and indirectly by ion generators and some other electronic air cleaners. There is no difference, despite some manufacturers' claims, between outdoor ozone and ozone produced by these devices. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) took action in 1995 against two manufacturers of ozone generating devices. The FTC charged that they made unsubstantiated claims about the ability of their products to clean air of various indoor air pollutants and to prevent or relieve allergies, asthma and other conditions. Under the FTC's settlement, the manufacturers are prohibited from making marketing claims that ozone is effective in cleaning indoor air, that their products do not create harmful by-products, and that they prevent or provide relief from allergies, asthma, and other specified conditions, unless the claims are supported by reliable and adequate substantiation (FTC, 1995).

Already, however, some understanding is emerging with evidence of the outgassing of unstable compounds which causes serious toxicity of indoor air; the adverse health effects of modern sealed, non-breading buildings which concentrate the toxins even further; stress from artificial electromagnetic fields; radon gas poisoning; and the effect of the many other household chemichals and substances that are used to make our clothes, cleaning products, paints, furniture, carpets, flooring, and even cosmetics. It is clear that we cannot continue randomly to manufacture new buildings and home products without looking fully at other considerations, including health and overall ecological concerns, in addition to cost and convenience. 1 .
