Airborne mold spores began to aggravate significant health challenges that my wife and I faced. We had two systems installed, one in the basement and one in a separate crawlspace in August. Within days the air began to smell better, the humidity levels dropped by 25%, and most importantly, we began to feel better. I would not hesitate to recommend the system to my patients, family, or friends." Sincerely,

How fresh is the air in your home? Most people spend the majority of their time indoors. Scientific evidence has shown that the air within our homes can be more polluted than
outside. In an attempt to conserve energy people have added weather-stripping, storm windows, insulation and caulking. While these are excellent energy savers, they make
your house airtight, which may trap pollutants. Air in your home is full of these invisible pollutants, which may come from chemicals, cleaning products, pesticides, pets, and
even cooking. More serious bacteria and viruses can lead to the flu, measles, chicken
pox, and tuberculosis. These pollutants are continually recirculated throughout your
indoor ventilation system. Fortunately there are ways to improve indoor air quality. Electrostatic filters, electronic air cleaners, ultraviolet air treatment, energy recovery
ventilators high efficiency media filters, and pleated filters can all be used to help neutralize unhealthy microorganisms and remove indoor pollutants and other airborne contaminants.

Coleman® Indoor Air Quality A study conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that indoor air could actually be more polluted than outdoor air. Considering that most individuals spend up to 90 percent of each day indoorsmore than half of that time at homeyou may be experiencing indoor air pollution without even knowing it. Today, homes are sealed more tightly to conserve energy. Unfortunately, this seals in mold, pollen, bacteria, and other pollutants. And since the U.S. EPA ranks indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health, many homeowners are concerned.

    Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) deals with the content of interior air that could affect health and comfort of building occupants. See also: The IAQ may be compromised by microbial contaminants (mold, bacteria), chemicals (such as carbon monoxide, radon), allergens, or any mass or energy stressor that can induce health effects. Recent findings have demonstrated that indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air (albeit with different pollutants) although this has not changed the common understanding of Air pollution. In fact, indoor air is often a greater health hazard than the corresponding outdoor setting. Using ventilation to dilute contaminants, filtration, and source control are the primary methods for improving indoor air quality in most buildings.. Inadequate general ventilation, building materials containing volatile chemicals, poor ventilation maintenance, or mold growth may result in employee complaints of headaches and allergy like symptoms. Low concentrations of volatile chemicals and bioaerosols are commonly found in indoor environments such as office spaces. Preventative maintenance plans and increased ventilation are the most frequent controls applied.
    It is often difficult to identify and resolve the many underlying causes and contributing factors to IAQ concerns. Complaints are first characterized to define the problem then a detailed HVAC system evaluation may be necessary along with the identification of other potential pollutant sources or pathways. Pollutant sampling may be conducted to verify the existence of contaminants or to document potential exposure.

    Office for Indoor Air Quality
    The Erie County Department of Environment and Planning (DEP) Office for Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) offers a variety of programs which provide accurate information and technical assistance to citizens, businesses, local governments, and civic organizations. Our goal is to reduce the health risks associated with exposure to radon gas, carbon monoxide and other indoor air contaminants to Erie County residents. While the program emphasizes radon gas and carbon monoxide awareness, information is available on additional potential sources of indoor air pollution as well. Indoor Air Quality Concerns
    In the last several years, a growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities. Other research indicates that, people spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors. Thus, for many people, the risks to health may be greater due to exposure to air pollution indoors that outdoors. Indoor air has always contained natural and man-made impurities such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, radon gas and carbon monoxide. In recent years, additional contaminants such as asbestos and formaldehyde have been identified in indoor air. While pollutant levels from individual sources may not pose a significant risk by themselves, most homes have more than one source that contributes to indoor air pollution.

    UNCG Indoor Air Quality Information and Assistance
    Purpose: The purpose of this program is to inform the University community about indoor air quality (IAQ) and act as a first point of contact for building occupants that suspect there may be indoor air quality issues where they work. Scope: University wide. The University recognizes the impact that indoor air quality has in the workplace. In an effort to provide the University Community with the optimum level of indoor air quality, the office of Safety has developed an indoor air quality program. Symptoms arising from poor indoor air quality often mimic those symptoms commonly associated with a cold, flu or allergies. These symptoms may include upper respiratory irritation, congestion, headaches, nausea, fatigue and itchy or watery eyes. Through our indoor air quality program of occupant interviews, building inspection and air quality testing, the Office of Safety is often able to determine the cause of indoor air quality problems. The objectives of this program include the following:
    • To prevent illness and adverse health symptoms associated with poor indoor air quality To respond to indoor quality complaints effectively and to make recommendations for improvement;

    A Low-Cost, Healthy Plan for Ventilation A Simple Two-Part System Does the Trick So where is a house supposed to get its air? Part one of this new low-cost ventilation strategy is simply running a duct from the outside of the home to the air handler to create a source of fresh air. Naturally, the outside opening needs to be covered with screen to prevent entry of foreign matter. In most cases, this means creating a duct that runs straight from the air handler to the nearest logical exit point in the house shell. However, care must be taken not to draw in air from an undesirable source. For example, the duct intake should not be located near a clothes dryer vent or gutter downspout, close to an odor source such as a dog pen, near an area where puddles might develop, or close to a vent stack if the duct intake is on the roof rather than in the foundation. At a total cost of less than $200, this simple two-part system merits consideration not only in lower-cost homes, but also in higher-end construction. It's a small price to pay for improving the health and safety of home occupants! More Information
