January is "Radon Action Month.” Radon is a cancer-causing, radioactive gas. It is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. You can't see, taste or smell radon. It comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water and gets into the air you breathe. Radon can get into any type of building but your greatest exposure is likely your home. For this reason, you should test your home to determine what levels are present. Choices:

Since the 1970s, when we started building tighter energy-efficient homes, the level of indoor air pollutants has steadily increased. Why? Contaminated air which once escaped through cracks around windows and doors is now trapped inside with you and your family. Discover how you can keep your family safe at home with ventilation solutions from Fantech.
What Do The Experts Say: In a survey conducted by the American Lung Association
Indoor air quality is important to human health because we spend over 80% of our time indoors. Tight insulation, too much humidity and other factors can lead to unhealthy air in your home or workplace, causing a number of health problems.

63. Carbon Dioxide In Buildings
Carbon dioxide in buildings can be good or bad, depending on the purpose of the building.
http://www.habmigern2003.info/future_trends/greenhouse/Indoor_air_quality.html
Carbon Dioxide in Buildings
Demand controlled ventilation Ventilation is a power-intensive process, regardless of whether the air must be heated, cooled or simply exchanged. With demand controlled ventilation it is possible to exchange the minimum amount of air, but still have perfect indoor air quality. Heating and cooling of buildings is one of the most power-intensive activities in most modern countries. Reducing the load in this direction is not just a money saving or an improvement in living quality, but also a contribution to a reduction in to national power requirements and pollution caused by power generating stations. Positive effects of carbon dioxide Carbon dioxide is essential for plant growth and supplementing the carbon dioxide level in greenhouses is one good method to increase yields without resorting to high levels of artificial fertilizers. These methods are used in many countries where greenhouses are essential to increase the length of the growing season. Sick building syndrome The causes of sick building syndrome, and indeed its very existence, were unknown for many years until it was traced to improved sealing of buildings and consequent high levels of carbon dioxide. The effects are not just limited to a basic feeling of wellness, but the high level of carbon dioxide will also be accompanied by a high humidity in the air and walls, leading to fungal growth and other related problems. Indoor Air Quality
Poor indoor air quality can adversely affect employee health and productivity. These costs to industry have been estimated to be in the "tens of billions of dollars per year" (Report to Congress on Indoor Air Quality, 1989). Improvements in the indoor air environment may substantially increase employee and student morale and productivity. Cromwell Environmental is experienced in testing for various IAQ components like Temperature, Humidity, Carbon Dioxide/Monoxide, Mold, Lead, Asbestos, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), and Particulates as well as offering solutions to better improve air quality. Since our founding in 1982, we have been called upon many times to identify an unknown and elusive IAQ issue (such as an odor, high VOC levels, or excess Particulates) in offices, schools, or hospitals and to formulate and oversee the mitigation of the problem. We are experienced expert witnesses in IAQ issues such as Mold and VOCs. At Cromwell Environmental our blend of Industrial Hygienists and Building Engineers are experienced in identifying the existence of an IAQ problem, as well as the solution. We are proud of our ability to solve or prevent indoor air quality issues in buildings.

Indoor Air Quality
Dust Mites Pollen Dander Mold Fungus Indoor air quality is a growing concern today because homes are being built tighter to be more energy efficient. Existing homes are being tightened up with weather stripping, insulation, storm windows and doors. These energy savings come with a price, since the exchange of indoor air and fresh outdoor air is limited. There are a number of things you can do to reduce the amount of pollutants in the air, such as frequent vacuuming and dusting, but the smallest particles that cause the most irritation can only be removed by filtering devices. To complicate matters, there are three distinct types of indoor air pollutants. Particulates

Indoor Air Quality
A study conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that indoor air could actually be more polluted than outdoor air. Considering that most individuals spend up to 90 percent of each day indoorsmore than half of that time at homeyou may be experiencing indoor air pollution without even knowing it. Today, homes are sealed more tightly to conserve energy. Unfortunately, this seals in mold, pollen, bacteria and other pollutants. And since the U.S. EPA ranks indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health, many homeowners are concerned.
Fortunately, there's a solution to most indoor air quality problems. York offers an array of choices designed to ventilate stale indoor air, zap airborne germs, trap airborne particles and moisturize parched air.

the pollution inside, where we spend 90% of our time. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor pollution levels can be 25 times,
and occasionally more than 100 times polluted than outdoor air.
In our well insulated homes and buildings, we lock in and recirculate pollen,
mold, fungi, bacteria, viruses, dust and mites. We even add to the problem by
contributing tobacco, wood or cooking smoke, pet dander, insecticides, toxins
emitted from air fresheners, carpets, glues, household cleaners, paints, varnishes,
press board furniture and lots more. In fact we breathe in about 50,000 of these
pollution particles with every breath, and we take 20,000 breaths a day!
These airborne contaminants adversely affect our health, comfort and productivity, as they lodge themselves in our mucous embranes and our lungs.

var ace_path = ''; Indoor Air Quality (IAS) Studies AMS has been performing air analysis for more than a decade. We take part in the American Industrial Hygiene Association’s EMPAT program. We can test for bacteria, yeast, or mold . We have special testing packages for residential mold analysis , and for complete mold analysis of any one sample (air, surface, or bulk).
Microbially contaminated buildings exist, most often because water has intruded into the interior of a building. Bacterial contamination of a building generally requires the most water. If bacteria are in high concentrations in a building, it usually means that water has saturated materials such as carpet, wallboard, or other porous materials.
Can building walls and ceilings have a normal appearance and still be contaminated? The answer is yes. Depending on the wall materials the interior surfaces may have extensive contamination and show no external contamination. In these cases, mold spore can escape into the room environment from openings in the walls. Air samples from the room can demonstrate this type of problem.
Condensation in Air ducts can also be a source of microbial contamination. Out of control humidifiers can be the source of this type of problem. Generally, this type of contamination is more disseminated throughout a building than pipe leaks.

Residential Energy Systems Ventilation, IAQ and HRV Systems
Indoor air quality and HRV Not many years ago little time or money was spent on building houses 'tight' which meant that outdoor air easily leaked inside and kept air quality at least as good as it was outside. It did not matter very much that heat also leaked out of the house in the winter and into the house in the summer. Gas and electricity were cheap so the furnace and the AC unit did their job for pennies. And who had ever heard of global warming? Today we are continually striving to build 'tight' new houses and to seal the leaks on our older homes as energy prices soar and concern over burning fossil fuels rises. BUT the maxim must now be 'Build tight and ventilate right' . We need fresh air in our homes to live healthily. The dangers of living in 'stale', polluted air are widely publicized. Breathing related illnesses are known to be exacerbated by poor air quality. Although our dry Colorado air tends to limit problems such as mould growth this can still be a problem in damp basements or in rooms with indoor pools or hot tubs. But how do we avoid these risks and save energy? We must exhaust stale air from our homes and bring in fresh air. For a more detailed description of Indoor Air Quality refer to the following publication by the Government Environmental Protection Agency together with the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Healthy Environments Indoor Air Quality at Home In industrialized countries, the average person spends about 90 per cent of his or her time indoors- in the home, school, or workplace. The air quality indoors, unfortunately, is often two to five times worse than it is outdoors. Contaminants of Indoor Air There are many things in homes that can contaminate the air you breathe. The types of indoor air pollutants that affect human health are characterized as biological, chemical, or physical. To conserve energy, many homes built in the 1970's and 80's, and some remodeled homes, are well insulated and tightly built. Less fresh air can get in and the stale, contaminated air cannot escape. The levels of contaminants inside a home can build up until they are many times greater than the levels in outdoor air. This is why modern homes usually have heat recovery ventilators (HRV's) installed, and apartment buildings have heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. This equipment conserves energy, but at the same time ensures an adequate supply of fresher outside air. To remain effective, the equipment must be regularly maintained according to the manufacturer's suggestions.

Bioremediation of contaminated soil and water is simply microbial ecology in action. Brockport Microbiology will conduct feasibility studies for in situ bioremediation of contaminated soils and groundwater, determine the suitability of sites for natural attenuation, or optimize biostimulation and bioaugmentation systems. We will collect samples from aerobic or anaerobic sites, and conduct laboratory microcosm tests to evaluate the potential for enhancement by addition of nutrients to stimulate oxidation or reductive dechlorination. We work with a variety of vendors of bacterial cultures that are adapted for growth in a wide range of different environments. Brockport Microbiology will work with environmental engineers to optimize bioremediation processes, or simply to explain these processes to regulators, attorneys or stakeholders in simple, easy-to-understand layman's terms, in writing or as an oral presentation.
Biological treatment of industrial and municipal wastewater is based on bacterial metabolism. However, plant operators, engineers, laboratory personnel and environmental regulators may at times lack an adequate understanding of these metabolic processes to enable them to optimize plant processes.
