Malacology
Last month, the museum where I work hired a new malacologist. Her name is Stephanie, she’s from Australia, and she most recently worked in Alabama. What’s a malacologist? It’s somebody who studies mollusks- snails, clams, mussels and other shelly creatures with soft squishy bodies and hard shells. Some mollusks, like slugs, squid, and octopi, lack shells but retain the soft, squishy characteristics. Malocologists used to be called conchologists (people who study shells), however as the field has matured, the interest has focused on the entire animal rather than just the shell, so the name got changed.
Last Friday, the part of my department that deals with the museum’s natural history collections took a malacology field trip to Bluff Spring Fen. We went because I knew that there were freshwater mussels in Poplar Creek, a moderately big stream that runs through the western edge of the preserve. For a variety of reasons, freshwater mussels are probably the most endangered group of species on the planet, so we want to know more about what we have at the Fen. Unfortunately we have had a lot of rain lately, and Poplar Creek was swollen to the point that we were unable to check out the mussels.

    Welcome!
Initiation Date: October 08, 2001) This section of "Man and Mollusc" has been developed as a resource for the serious shell collectors, malacologists and conchologists. This is a separate section from the site's General Interest and Internet Resource pages. In order for you to get the most of your visit to this section, it is advisable that you have at least a minimal understanding of malacology and its terminology. Of course, all are welcome but amateur viewers BEWARE! " Serious scientific knowledge and terminology onboard!" My hopes and intentions for this zone is that information gained from such a joint sharing of top quality information will help in answering some of the many molluscan questions and problems faced by scientists and shell collectors today. I also hope that it will encourage students to seek out a career in malacology and that shell collectors will get more involved and knowledgeable in their hobby.

Tim Pearce: New curator of malacology
    Carnegie Mar/Apr 2002
Tim Pearce, former curator of Mollusks, Delaware Museum of Natural History, has joining the scientific staff of Carnegie Museum of Natural History as the new curator of Malacology, which most of us know as shellfish and snails. "Malacology" comes from the Latin for "soft" (mollis) and is the study of all those soft-bodied, backboneless creatures that have inhabited the earth for hundreds of millions of years, and often protected themselves with hard shells. The museum has an important collection of approximately three million shells which, when combined with the fossil examples in Invertebrate Paleontology, make a scientific resource of about 3.5 million specimens. For the last 20 years the shell collection has been kept active and maintained by dedicated volunteers and supportive museum scientists. There have been arrangements for donations, loans, and scientific visitors, but no fulltime curator.

Advancing Vermont Malacology -or- Finding lime recycled after half a billion years of mineral inertia (updated 9/11/04) By Harry G. Lee My wife's birthday occasioned a visit to her family's "Homestead" just north of Manchester Center, Bennington County, Vermont over the weekend of September 26-28, 2003. Aside from the indoor and patio festivities, the two dozen or so visitors enjoyed an assortment of outdoor recreation ranging from jogging, hiking, and fly-fishing to pet burial, fence-dismantling, and, needless to say for the honoree's spouse, prospecting for shells. Mt. Equinox, Vermont photograph by Suzie Lawrence The Homestead is located in the valley of the fabled trout stream, the Batten Kill, as it winds its way to the Hudson River between mountain ranges. Two crests dominate the western horizon: Mt. Equinox (highest point 3848 feet above sea level) in the SW and a lower ridge also belonging to theTaconic Mts. (Mt. Aeolus, Owls Head, Netop and Dorset Mt.) to the NW. On the second day, when the mist had risen high enough in the morning sky, I was able to make out a bare whitish scarp on the north flank of Mt. Aeolus, which rises about 2400 feet. I inquired about this feature, and my mother- and brother-in law confirmed my suspicion that this was a marble quarry - one of a group of two dozen excavations on the slopes of Dorset Mountain and Mt. Aeolus.

    Background
The goals and principles of making biodiversity data openly and universally available have been defined in the Memorandum of Understanding on GBIF, paragraph 8 (see the relevant excerpts in the attached Annex). The Participants who have signed the MoU have expressed their willingness to make biodiversity data available through their nodes to foster scientific research development internationally and to support the public use of these data. GBIF data sharing should take place within a framework of due attribution. Therefore, using data available through the GBIF network requires agreeing with the following:
    1. Data Use Agreements
  • The quality and completeness of data cannot be guaranteed. Users employ these data at their own risk. Users shall respect restrictions of access to sensitive data. In order to make attribution of use for owners of the data possible, the identifier of ownership of data must be retained with every data record. Users must publicly acknowledge, in conjunction with the use of the data, the data providers whose biodiversity data they have used. Data providers may require additional attribution of specific collections within their institution.
