3. Mammals In addition to providing daily care for the mammals that are not part of shows or training programs, members of this department also rescue and rehabilitate ill or injured wild mammals. In some parks, Animal Care Specialists care for animals according to park location, while in others, each Animal Care Specialist cares for a particular type of mammal (primates, antelopes, dolphins, etc.). Applicants with a college degree are preferred, but years of experience are helpful as well. The Western lowland gorilla ( Gorilla gorilla gorilla) is one of the endangered species under the care of the Mammals department at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. The park works with other environmental organizations and zoological institutions to promote breeding programs in the hope of reintroducing endangered animals back into their natural enviornments. a. Compared to other vertebrates (animals with backbones), mammals have highly developed nervous systems, and they show an intelligence and resourcefulness that few other animals can match. Mammals include some of the most familiar members of the animal kingdom, such as

Mammals are the dominant life forms on Earth today and have been for many millions of years, even though the number of living species (somewhat more than 4,000) is small when compared with the 750,000 species of insects. Over much of the world the character of the landscape has been transformed by the activities of humans and the other mammals that they have introduced into new environments.
The class Mammalia includes about 19 living orders of mammals and an equivalent number of extinct ones. The individual species are widely distributed, from the edges of the Arctic ice cap in the north, down through temperate, desert, and tropical areas, to the edge of the Antarctic continent in the south; they also occupy the oceans and major river systems of the world. Mammals span an incredible range of sizes, from shrews and bats that weigh but a few grams (a fraction of an ounce) to the blue whale, weighing more than 100 tons, the largest mammalÑindeed, the largest animalÑthat has ever lived.
CHARACTERISTICS Mammals as a group can be defined by certain diagnostic features, even though some of these features are shared by other groups and not every feature is found in all mammals. Viewed broadly, mammals are vertebrate (see chordate) animals that

European Association for Aquatic Mammals
The European Association for Aquatic Mammals (E.A.A.M.) was founded in 1972 at a meeting at the Dolfinarium of Harderwijk, the Netherlands. The E.A.A.M. is an organisation of people interested in marine mammals in human care, in a zoological environment or in the wild, and includes veterinarians, biologists, zoo and marine park directors and managers, trainers (husbandry professionals), researchers, students and other persons who devote a significant amount of time to the welfare of marine mammals through research, medical care, training, education, conservation, management and related activities.
The objectives of the E.A.A.M. are:
  • To promote the free exchange of knowledge and further scientific progress pertaining to research, medical care, training, education, conservation, management and other aspects of aquatic mammals. To provide an organisation for individuals who devote a significant amount of their professional activity to research, medical care, training, education, conservation, management and other aspects in the aquatic mammal field and to offer information on these aspects to the whole membership.

This collection supports a wide range of scientific research by resident staff and associates, as well as numerous visiting scientists. Divisional collection management staff preserve, conserve, and document our specimens to ensure their accessiblity to present and future research activities. Our mammal specimens have also played an integral role in such NMNH exhibitions as The Kenneth E. Behring Family Hall of Mammals and the African Elephant in our museum's rotunda. We also support public education by maintaining several databases relevant to mammals.

    pheromones,
a kind of chemical signal originally studied in insects. The first pheromone ever identified (in 1956) was a powerful sex attractant for silkworm moths. A team of German researchers worked 20 years to isolate it. After removing certain glands at the tip of the abdomen of 500,000 female moths, they extracted a curious compound. The minutest amount of it made male moths beat their wings madly in a "flutter dance." This clear sign that the males had sensed the attractant enabled the scientists to purify the pheromone. Step by step, they removed extraneous matter and sharply reduced the amount of attractant needed to provoke the flutter dance. When at last they obtained a chemically pure pheromone, they named it "bombykol" for the silkworm moth, "Bombyx mori" from which it was extracted. It signaled, "come to me!" from great distances. "It has been soberly calculated that if a single female moth were to release all the bombykol in her sac in a single spray, all at once, she could theoretically attract a trillion males in the instant," wrote Lewis Thomas in

    http://www.gpnc.org/mammals.htm
Mammals: Are in the class Mammalia within the subphylum Vertebrata. Are warm-blooded. They have the ability to maintain their body temperature by internal means. The technical word for this is endothermy. Birds are the only other group of animals in the world that can do this. Feed their babies milk Have hair. This unique body covering is made of keratin and grows from special cells located in the skin. Some mammals are hairier than others. Marine mammals such as whales may be virtually hairless. Have a four-chambered heart. This is the most advanced kind of heart. It keeps the arterial (oxygenated) and venous (oxygen-depleted) blood completely separate. Have live birth. The monotremes (platypus and echidnas) are exceptions in that they lay eggs. In marsupials, such as the opossum, the young are born in a very primitive state and then finish their development in an external pouch. Have very specialized and diversified teeth. Again, there are some exceptions (monotremes, baleen whales, e.g.) but the mammals have carried development of teeth farther than any other group of animals.
