I don't think this is a flip-flop for Doctor Goodnow from what I recall of the previous posts... she was pretty moderate on the issue. She argued, basically, that we're to blame for needing a cull, but didn't deny that one was needed.
And to be perfectly honest, I have HUGE issues with the HSUS and their credibility and concern for animals... but that is an issue for another thread. Maybe that biases me more than I am able to compensate for, but I find the information here painfully one-sided and at times very deceptively presented. I think this link is pretty fair, and has relatively balanced information that at times is damaging to both arguments. I will try to find more that straddles the fence some. ** Oops! Canadian Bloody Ice
Last year, the world looked on in horror as the Canadian government permitted the slaughter of more than 330,000 harp seals. During the hunt, baby seals are shot or repeatedly clubbed.
The Canadian government claims that hunters only kill adult seals, but 97 percent of the seals killed last year were less than 3 months of age.
An estimated 42 percent of the animals are skinned alive. Hunters toss dead and dying seals into heaps and leave their carcasses to rot on the ice floes because there is no market for seal meat.
The Canadian government has given the go-ahead for hunters to bludgeon to death 335,000 baby harp seals this year.
To stop this atrocity, we must generate an international outcry against the Canadian government for sanctioning it.
The following links will provide you with detailed information on the current harp seals situation:

    Marine Mammals
Many species of whales, seals and dolphins are threatened world-wide. Hundreds of thousands of dolphins and whales die each year in fishing nets. Coastal development and herbicides destroy the habitat of manatees and dugongs. Marine otters are hunted for their pelts or killed by people who see them as competitors for fish and sea urchins. Growing public concern in the early 1980s led UNEP and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN to draw up a Global Plan of Action for Marine Mammals (MMAP). Marine mammal conservation is a cross-cutting issue relevant to several MEAs especially CITES, the International Whaling Commission (IWC), the CBD and the CMS. The central goal of the MMAP is to generate a consensus among governments on which to base their policies for marine mammal conservation under the auspices of UNEP, and since then several Regional Seas have incorporated marine mammal conservation into their Action Plans and protocols.

Marine mammals include whales, dolphins, porpoises, manatees and dugongs, otters, polar bears, seals, fur seals and sea lions, and walruses. Rather than attempt to include complete natural history about marine mammals, we have included some images to illustrate the diversity of marine mammals and recommend that you consult your library to learn more.
