The University of Arizona is one of only a handful of Universities to have been awarded two VIGRE grants since the NSF started this prestigious program in 1998. Our VIGRE Program has resources for: The VIGRE program (Vertical Integration of Research and Education) provides support for training graduate students, undergraduates, and post-doctoral fellows, with the aim of increasing the number of well-prepared US citizens and permanent residents who pursue careers in the mathematical sciences. The Arizona VIGRE program will provide its current and future students with a comprehensive range of educational, research, and professional development experiences; competitive packages of financial support; and a unique outreach program for faculty and students at regional institutions. Generous support from the University of Arizona administration will enable these activities to be sustained over the long term. Meet Some of our Distinguished Faculty:

of the Week
Mathematics is central
to an advanced technological society, and the Mathematics Department at Iowa State University plays a major role in its teaching, research and service at the university.
We are dedicated
to providing high quality instruction to all students who take a mathematics course, and to imparting a basic knowledge of the subject to those students choosing mathematics as their major.
Our graduate program
offers degrees in mathematics and applied mathematics at both the M.S. and Ph.D. levels. Students can choose traditional areas such as algebra and analysis or newer disciplines such as biomathematics or information assurance. Students completing our program are successful in finding employment.
Our faculty members
are active researchers in their disciplines, developing new mathematical ideas and algorithms, and interacting with people outside their disciplines.

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics
Our students and our faculty understand the unique challenges and satisfactions that the careful study of mathematics offers.
Mathematical ideas and results not only represent some of the highest accomplishments of our culture, but also are an indispensable tool in an ever-increasing array of disciplines. In this sense mathematics has a dual nature: it is both an independent field of study valued for precision of thought and intrinsic beauty, and it is a rich source of techniques and methods for the world of applications.
Here at Colorado State we take great pride in making sure that both of these aspects of mathematics are well represented in our research and our curriculum.

The Illinois Learning Standards for Mathematics were developed by Illinois teachers for Illinois schools. These goals, standards and benchmarks are an outgrowth of the 1985 Illinois State Goals for Learning influenced by the latest thinking in school mathematics. This includes the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics; Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics ; ideas underlying recent local and national curriculum projects; results of state, national, and international assessment findings; and the work and experiences of Illinois school districts and teachers. Mathematics is a language we use to identify, describe and investigate the patterns and challenges of everyday living. It helps us to understand the events that have occurred and to predict and prepare for events to come so that we can more fully understand our world and more successfully live in it. Mathematics encompasses arithmetic, measurement, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, probability and other fields. It deals with numbers, quantities, shapes and data, as well as numerical relationships and operations. Confronting, understanding and solving problems is at the heart of mathematics. Mathematics is much more than a collection of concepts and skills; it is a way of approaching new challenges through investigating, reasoning, visualizing and problem solving with the goal of communicating the relationships observed and problems solved to others.

The Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC) is used to categorize items covered by the two reviewing databases, Mathematical Reviews (MR) and Zentralblatt MATH (Zbl). The MSC is broken down into over 5,000 two-, three-, and five-digit classfications, each corresponding to a discipline of mathematics (e.g., 11 = Number theory; 11B = Sequences and sets; 11B05 = Density, gaps, topology). The current classification system, 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC2000), is a revision of the 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification, which is the classification that has been used by MR and Zbl since the beginning of 1991. MSC2000 is the result of a collaborative effort by the editors of MR and Zbl to update the classification. The editors acknowledge the many helpful suggestions from the mathematical community during the revision process. Changes at the 2-digit level Conversion Tables MSC2000 is now being revised for use in 2010. MR and Zbl welcome community input into this revision process. Comments can be submitted through the
