Interactive Mathematics Miscellany and Puzzles
This site is for teachers, parents and students who seek engaging mathematics. Many of the topics are accompanied by Java illustrations. There are more than 900 Java applets. The applets can be licensed by teachers for inclusion in their own pages. Most recently I have moved the greatest part of the Games and Puzzles section to a separate site CTK Math Games for Kids . This allowed me to switch from the older applet tags to the object tags that are fast becoming common nowadays. This will insure that the applets always run in the most appropriate version of the Java Virtual Machine without the need for my or user intervention. The applets run in a browser Java addon and also need a few smaller libraries. For this reason, pages that carry applets may take longer to load than the Java free ones. However, the libraries have to be loaded only once: subsequent pages load pretty fast. Also please note that the Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) comes with its own Java Virtual Machine (JVM), the software piece which executes Java applets. The Microsoft's implementation of JVM is inferior to the Sun's and lacks certain features needed by some applets. It is recommended for the IE users to upgrade the JVM, which can be done by downloading it from the Sun's site . The installation procedure is virtually automatic.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics provides the University community with a complete spectrum of curriculum in our disciplines, from introductory-level general education courses to doctoral dissertation direction and postdoctoral mentoring. The Department offers undergraduate majors a broad array of options through which they can earn the bachelor's degree. The graduate program awards Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics and Statistics and has M.S. programs in Applied Mathematics and Statistics. These degrees may be earned while concentrating in one or more of several possible areas of study. The graduate program also houses a professional master's degree program in applied mathematics. This program prepares its students to participate and contribute in the high-technology industrial world, and its graduates are highly sought after by that community. The Department has 47 full-time faculty members, 8 of whom hold postdoctoral appointments at the Visiting Assistant Professor rank, and 69 graduate students (approximately 40% of whom are women). Several centers and special facilities are resident in the Department, these include: the Center for Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Computation and the Center for Geometry, Analysis, Numerics, and Graphics (GANG)

Wisconsin 's Model Academic Standards for Mathematics
Introduction
The Wisconsin Mathematics Academic Standards ( content and performance ) have been developed by a team of Wisconsin citizens including classroom teachers, professional educators, parents, business persons, and school board members. The team used various resource documents in its deliberations, including the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), A Guide to Curriculum Planning in Mathematics of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI), and state standards and guidelines developed by other entities such as the New Standards Project, the National Institute for Educational Research in Japan, and the states of California, Colorado, Michigan, Oregon, and Virginia. The Wisconsin Mathematics Standards are designed to be general guidelines which may be adopted or adapted by local school districts with cooperation and input from parents and other concerned citizens. They are not meant to be a full curriculum nor a prescription for instructional practice carried out from week-to-week in classrooms. They are important goals for ALL students from which individual schools can build a complete curriculum specific to their district's and children's needs.

    Welcome!
The Brandeis Department of Mathematics combines the informality, flexibility, and general friendliness of a small department with the intellectual vigor of a faculty whose research accomplishments have placed it among the top departments in the country. Courses and seminars range from introductory classes to the frontiers of current research. In many, especially at advanced levels, faculty members will often be in the audience with students lecturing. The result is an active dialogue among all members of the department and a general air of living, creative mathematics. The student at Brandeis is fortunate to be in an area containing many first-rate universities. He or she will find a wealth of lectures, seminars, colloquia, and opportunities for contact with mathematicians at Harvard, M.I.T., Tufts, Boston University, Northeastern, and the many other local schools. This unusual concentration creates a mathematical community of unparalleled diversity and depth. In addition to mathematics, the Boston area is well known for its lively cultural and social life. The large academic population has created an active intellectual environment that provides many social and recreational opportunities.

http://aleph0.clarku.edu/~djoyce/mathhist/
Every culture on earth has developed some mathematics. In some cases, this mathematics has spread from one culture to another. Now there is one predominant international mathematics, and this mathematics has quite a history. It has roots in ancient Egypt and Babylonia, then grew rapidly in ancient Greece. Mathematics written in ancient Greek was translated into Arabic. About the same time some mathematics of India was translated into Arabic. Later some of this mathematics was translated into Latin and became the mathematics of Western Europe. Over a period of several hundred years, it became the mathematics of the world. There are other places in the world that developed significant mathematics, such as China, southern India, and Japan, and they are interesting to study, but the mathematics of the other regions have not had much influence on current international mathematics. There is, of course, much mathematics being done these and other regions, but it is not the traditional math of the regions, but international mathematics. By far, the most significant development in mathematics was giving it firm logical foundations. This took place in ancient Greece in the centuries preceding Euclid. See

Aristotle and Mathematics
First published Fri 26 Mar, 2004 Aristotle uses mathematics and mathematical sciences in three important ways in his treatises. Contemporary mathematics serves as a model for his philosophy of science and provides some important techniques, e.g., as used in his logic. Throughout the corpus, he constructs mathematical arguments for various theses, especially in the physical writings, but also in the biology and ethics. Finally, Aristotle's philosophy of mathematics provides an important alternative to platonism. In this regard, there has been a revival of interest in recent years because of its affinity to physicalism and fictionalisms based on physicalism. However, his philosophy of mathematics may better be understood as a philosophy of exact or mathematical sciences. This article will explore the influence of mathematical sciences on Aristotle's metaphysics and philosophy of science and will illustrate hisuse of mathematics.
